While not at all an easy read, what it portends is huge for the multi-linguists amongst us. Imagine switching between languages mid document and your spell-checker doesn't even flinch. Neat!

Oh, cool - kinda like Nisus has been able to do since the days of OS 9 on the Mac. They just (finally) released their OS X version.

They did that back in OS 9?! Gee! So I'm monolinguisticly naive. I knew that much...

Over the years I had come to the conclusion that one of the issue that causes instability in Windows OS (apart of course its inherent technical shortcomings and overall crookedness) is the 3rd party apps, security suites, add-ons, freeware, shareware etc... a thriving industry has been created to fill Windows shortcomings and lack of vital features (see firewall, AV and so on).

We have reached a (unsustainable) point where users (me included, I'm as guilty as anyone) keep installing these little pieces of software that clearly have stability issue and (in many cases) are not authorized or endorsed by the OS manufacturer (Microsoft). I lost the count on how many times software add-ons had caused my system to freeze, crash or become downright unstable. Yes, we all love kicking Steve B. & Bill G. in the goolies but to be fair to them some of these problems are caused by the stupidity of users.

This time around I'm gonna be very parsimonious on add-ons and will only install certified software by Apple that has been proved to be reliable and well integrated with OS X. Once bitten twice shy.

Sarge- Next time you're in System Preferences. Go into Universal Access and check Enable access for assistive devices. I forget exactly why, but it's come in handy more than once. You might also want to go into Displays and Sound and Network and enable show in the menu bar on each. And while, you're at it, check out the wow factor by searching for something [anything] in the Sys Prefs search box. Kinda neat visuals there, I think.

ya done all of them last night. I'm still in awe of this machine, my Sony Vaio (which is as cool as a cucumber) looks like the ugly duck in comparison.

eheheh... no double meaning here Daffy

In all fairness to reality, you can run a virgin Windows system, and run all the patches and system updates, and it will still end up being nicely infected, and freezing at the end of the day (even if you never touch the keyboard, or do anything on it). Charming, ain't it? Current recod on non-interfered infection - 8 minutes.

That's a VERY good intention, and I congratulate you on it. You will also find that the system is far more solidly engineered, and programming guidelines far better adhered to, that utils and apps do not cause instabilities -- I run my system quite lean, but there are a couple of utils and system extensions I run, and my system is solid as a rock -- for months on end.

Question:

is there any particular reason why all the apps I have downloaded, installed, run and saved in the application folder, disappear every time I log back on? Before you ask I log on as Administrator, lock the apps icon in the dock and save them in the application folder. The apps are the following:

Firefox
MSN Messenger
Skype
Quicksilver

Also when I log back on all the icons I pinned to the dock are vanished sometimes replaced by ? question mark. This is proving to be frustrating and pain in the neck in having to source the apps online, re-install them, customize them, add bookmarks, every bloody time I log on. Plus all the mouse customization disappear too. It seems like OS X applies a clean slate to any changes and reverse to default setting every time I switch back on.

Maybe I found the solution; it seems to that in Mac OS X downloaded apps do not get installed in the library (registry in Windows), so one has to manually feed them in the application folder and then (the clincher) "Create Archive" to embed them in the library so that when you log back on are loaded in the application folder.

Now that's my take of things (but sure as hell, both Daffy & Skippy will undoubtedly correct me and offer a more reasoned explanation) and it seems to be working now, touching wood. Obviously when one has only been using a Mac for less than a day and has no hardback manuals to reference back on, then he has go on by trial and error. I'm learning in the hard way, sometimes frustrating but mostly fun!

No, No, NO - do not install Apps in the Library.

That's what the 'Applications' folder is for.

The apps you mentioned:

Firefox
MSN Messenger
Skype
Quicksilver

All either come with an installer, or with simple instructions that involve 'drag this into the APPLICATIONS' folder'. Do not place your apps ANYWHERE else.

Dragging to the Dock, from there, I think you figured out, and that's all you need to do.

This is really odd, or is this the way things are done in Windows that you have been trained to do things so oddly? No 'create archive ' is needed to install apps, and certainly NOTHING should go in the Library folder -- every!

Sarge- Take a minute to read these two links. Start with this one
Mac 101
But before you go on to the next, let me draw your attention to that first picture. Do you see how Applications is colored dark blue. Now look above that and find the lighter shade of Blue coloring the four squares. This leftmost box indicates you're in Icon view. It also shows there are two other view options to the right. You can toggle into these at will.

Here's how: Open a Finder window on your desktop. Now select the Applications folder, as done in the picture. Once you're there, with your left thumb continually depressing the Apple key [aka Command key] tap the 1 key, then 2 key, and then 3 key and repeat.

Also, while there in the Finder, go to View > Customize Toolbar and drag at least the 'New Folder', 'Path' and 'Get Info' icons into the toolbar. Then play around with each at your convenience.

Get Info is quite useful for a multitude of reasons. As for example, say you just plugged a Flash Drive in to your computer. On the Desktop it will show you've mounted a Drive and under it probably a name- USB Drive. In the Get Info pane, to the left of Name & Extension is a triangle. If this is pointing to the right, give it a mouse click and it will drop down to reveal the Flash Drives name [just as if you were looking at a PDF file it would give the name followed by the.pdf extension, or.doc if it were a Word document]

Now, put a cursor over the USB and overwrite your initials. Now click Apple key +W. Now go back to your Desktop and look at the mounted disk name- rather than USB it's been customized. Next time you pop it into your Sony it will read the same in My Computer

Here is another nice tutorial page worth a look Installing Applications

One last Finder tip: In Finder, go to Preferences > Advanced > [select] Show all file extensions.

Skippy, yes I've already played with all those settings, this is something you do when you're in a new environment or use a new device/toy. One just looks around to see how things work and tends to customize visual settings to his/her liking.

Where I got stuck was in installing downloaded apps, the last link in your post, put it succinctly: "Installing applications on Mac OS X is incredibly easy compared to most platforms. However, the approach taken can be confusing at first for many users. There are generally three basic steps when installing a piece of software; Acquire, Un-package, Install. In addition to the instructions presented here, software publishers often provide additional notes with their software that will tell you more about the installation of their products."

Where I was going wrong was in the assumption that once downloaded the app would automatically install in my apps folder, as with Windows OS (c:/ Program Files/....) . I wasn't aware of the above 3 steps. Anyway thanks to the patient assistance of Daffy, who took me by hand yesterday step-by-step, I've now mastered the process. It's all good and well now.

It's part of human nature to reverse to the tried and tested (Windows OS) when confronted with something new and different (Mac OS X), so probably I didn't heed my own advice then and just applied the familiar Windows mindset to the process. There are lots of customization I need to go through... i.e. how to open a downloaded vid link in the QuickTime player and not in the browser windows, if I were in the Windows OS environment I would know what to do. It's the learning curve one has to go through, so feel free to kick my goolies to steer me back in the right track.

Let's do this - when you have questions about particular tasks, just post them in this thread, and either myself or Skip can probably address them point by point, and help you out.

"how to open a downloaded vid link in the QuickTime player and not in the browser windows" - Explain this one a bit more. Do you mean a URL link that ends up opening in the browser window, or a do you mean an actual quicktime video that you downloaded to the desktop?
