Because Apple controls the software on the phone, no way to get a Skype client on there.

Not just Skype. Any VOIP client. Until some one is able to create a web browser client that will run in Safari.

Or until Apple installs a VOIP client via an iTunes update to the iPhone. But that likely won't happen until the ATT exclusivity ends.

Ahh, that would show good reason why Apple released Safari on Windows OS. along with releasing code for developers. albeit sans access to Core animation, local storage, be multi-threaded, or run at native speed.

But more users of the software allows more creation of future additions to the software; on both PCs and MACs. Just look at what Firefox has done....From a developers standpoint, you get a bigger base from both PC and MAC users; as I highly doubt that many MAC users care for Safari running on PCs but for users of the PC might be more interested in developing the software further; for the benefit of their iPhone.. (and consequently Safari)..

3 friends of mine, got their hands on one here in nyc. playing with as we speak, its pretty cool.

works good, we are using wifi, in the apartment... screen is nice, very clear since its optical glass, multiple finger touches of the keyboard are cool, sent out some sms messages (typing isnt too bad, but cant wait to see if you try when your wasted in a club texting with one hand) no MMS though (strange since it takes photos), watching youtube vidz is good too,... Windows OS and Linux OS computers sees it as a external HD (like the iPod)

one thing though, activation (via your computer on iTunes) was a bit of a hassle. if you register under a new number the time to get up and running is pretty fast... if you transfer an existing number it took well into 30-40 minutes.

oh yeah for those of you wanting someone to purchase you one and then send it over (outside the US) to you. when you register the phone you need credit/debit card, email, and your Social Security Number (apparently its for credit checks) so for those without US citizenship your in for tough luck.... until its released in your area

f*** the phone, the real story here is that Steve Jobs is a marketing genius. Hell he even got the Woz waiting in line even though as an Apple employee he gets one for free. People are just left to try to predict his script. Of course there will be updates. I think the next scene will be Appple runs out of stock in a week to create a scarcity fear factor and have more people piling on waiting lists to buy them. Notice there has been no release of stock numbers of iPhones. So why not shut-off supply after a week and create wave 2 of a panic buying spree.

Motorola is already shitting their pants! Expect a rash of innovation in cell phones. I am glad Jobs lite a fire under their asses. Some heads will be a rolling!

Oh, his script is well known, and easy to figure out - cognitive dissonance just keeps the 'competitors' from having a clue. But they don't have a clue anyway, so why start now?

As to what's the future? Think of all of that neat iPhone technology and where will it go next?

iPod - of course, but that's derivative. The scroll wheel is dead, for all practical purposes, and so is Apple's licensing of that user interface from Creative. Whoops...

Mac - the big story will be when multi-touch cross-pollinates over to the Mac, as that will give us a true table Mac worth writing home about, and the closest we will have come to true Star Trek technology, at that point. Redefining the portable computer, that's what's happening next.

So are Palm, and Nokia and everyone else in that space -- as are the other carriers. It's just unfortunate (albeit understandable) that Apple went with AT&T. So far, Verizon and Sprint are just talking crack about how they are 'not threatened'. Let's wait another month, after you lost 10% of your user base, respectively.

Yeah, innovation in the phone space will follow, but first, there will be meek attempts at copying many iPhone features -- again, not understanding what it's all about. It's not features, it's the product.

And that would be?

Not Talkety, they just do what Jajah does... they call you back over your local phone network.

No, I don't think there will be a Safari VOIP client. No Java support.

3 reasons why there might not be a VOIP client in iPhone:

1. Perhaps the settlement with Cisco over iPhone name requires Apple to not compete in VOIP for some period of time.

2. Perhaps ATT forced Apple to not include a VOIP client that could be used to make free calls instead of over their network.

3. Perhaps Apple has a surprise waiting. iChat will be VOIP enabled and installed via an update to iPhone via iTunes. There currently is no chat client installed on iPhone.

Spot on for the next scene

"Despite an apparent surplus after the June 29th launch, iPhones have largely been sold out at AT&T shops and have also run out at some of Apple's own outlets.

AT&T reported on Saturday that the company had all but depleted the supply of the Apple handsets it had been given for the launch just a day before. The cellphone carrier was unwilling to state just how many of the phones had been sold but noted that "virtually all" of the company-run stores had sold out completely.

Various allegations have been made online, however, that suggested each of AT&T's more than 1800 official stores received relatively few of the devices versus their Apple counterparts, making them more likely to run out from the beginning. Apple has so far declined to say how many units had passed through its doors, and said only that it had seen "a lot of excitement and buzz" at its 162 US shops, according to a company spokeswoman.

Apple supply, in turn, had initially been healthy but was also set to run low over the course of the weekend. The firm's web-based availability tracker initially reported all American stores as having stock on hand by the end of Friday evening but is now showing signs that its own retail branches are feeling the effects of strong initial demand.

California was the hardest hit by the first wave of customers, according to the charts. Outlets in the Los Angeles and San Francisco regions have cleared nearly all of their iPhones, with the Bay Area's stock having reportedly emptied its backrooms particularly quickly.

"The Burlingame Apple Store went through two shipments of iPhones this morning, selling out by 10:30AM," said Scott Beale of art promo house Laughing Squid. "I was able to get there just in time."

Parts of Hawaii and Texas were also reporting iPhone droughts as of Saturday night, while certain major cities such as Atlantic City, Las Vegas, Miami, and Oklahoma City similarly claimed to have exhausted their supplies"

My next scene prediction:

Once initial selling spree is done in the USA, Apple will announce European deal and new 3G model phone. !st time buyers in the USA will be bashing themselves in the head with their new iPhones.
