There is a cost to using credit cards in the US. The credit cards charge a percentage of the sale for use of the credit card. American Express is the most expensive almost 3% of the purchase. The retailers usually absorb the cost of using a credit card.

Mr Alan
"Bollocks. Separate books mean nothing in this case. This is not a case of either financial or management accounting. It is about supporting YOUR product.

Because one way or the other, the sale wherever it happened, at the end benefits the same corporation and the same shareholders.

The company could then compensate whichever company made the service. If they made the money by selling in Singapore to a French that laters get the camera repaired in Argentina... no matter what the manufacturer made money. He should be behind his product if he claims to offer some warranty and if he claims to be a global player."

The way you describe it is the way it works in most of the world, but the Japanese have decided to have separate marketing companies in the US, with a separate set of books, who buy the products from the manufacturer and offer their own USA warranty.

I am just explaining how it works. Don't blame the messenger.

Yes, but the point is that there is no discount (at least no legal discount) for paying cash in the USA, so credit card usage is widespread, alleviating the need for traveler checks in the USA (assuming that you have a credit card which protects you if fraudulent use occurs).

Yes, the retailers pay the credit card companies a lot of money (2-3%), but the credit card companies absorb the loss for fraudulent use and they pay the retailer almost immediately.

As noted, at least part of the cost of the credit card fee to the retailer is paid by the consumers in the form of higher prices. However, processing large of amounts of cash has its own drawbacks for retailers, such as theft, security costs, inconvenience to customers (resulting in lost business), so that the 2-3% fee for credit cards is not totally wasted.

In addition, it is harder for retailers (and service personnel) to under-report income or tips (and pay less taxes) if the vast majority of income is through credit card sales. So the widespread use of credit cards reduces the national deficit (and in theory reduces your income taxes).

In fact, 2-3% that credit card companies charge does not even cover their costs. The credit card companies make money on the people who don't pay off their bill every month and incur finance charges. That's where the real profit is.

You always blame me.

BTW, the USA warranties are different than the international warranties, due to regulation by the US government (and some states). The manufacturers don't want to offer the USA warranty to eveyone else.

Do I? Nah! Do not flatter yourself. I do not give you that much "credit."

BTW, some USA warranties are better than the international ones. Take Montblanc for example (the pen manufacturer). Anywhere they sell MontBlanc fountain pens in the USA, you can take your broken pen and they will replace it with a new one no questions asked -of course you have to leave the old broken one behind. You do not need proof of purchase or anything.

Now everytime I have a problem with a MontBlanc pen I wait until my next trip to the USA. Here is an example of where different waranties may work in favor of "some" consumers. Damn! In Europe it can cost you to repair one as much as a new one.

P.S.: Alan, we haven't had a good fight since the politics and history topics were moved out of the main forum. I kinda of miss fighting with you.
