Well, it is difficult to understand this phenomenon. I think CS is remarking, as he says, on those he's met. Considering that it is probably his good fortune to meet the better-off folks, there is a possible truth.
If someone is working at nice international school, they can afford a car. A certain few other hi-class places associated with the government (Chula demo schools, for instance) will even help someone underwrite it or a house. But that requires real qualifications, and comprises about 5% of the schools and Farang teachers in the Bangkok area.
As for the others in the myriad government schools and various private schools (of every level), they are the hoi polloi; most of these teachers you see only make about 40K Baht or less per month. They haven't a chance in hell of buying a car, even the oldest, most used, most dilapidated one up for sale. They could barely afford a bicycle. They are by and large living month to month.
If their schools are off the transportation grid, they take a bus or songtaew until it runs out, and take a motorcycle taxi the rest of the way. Whether a car is cheaper in the long run is not an issue, because they don't have the capital for the purchase.
Their salaries go for their 5 - 8K rent, food, constant beer and money for the girlfriend whom they met on their first and last holiday here, and which is why they're in this predicament, for the most part. Their relationship will last 2 years. After that, he either goes back home or gets another one, perhaps from a different beerbar or perhaps even from RCA. Many of them don't do either and just drink themselves into insanity.
The strange thing is, they are not all young slackers from back home in the West. They were business owners, bankers, soldiers, construction workers, computer graphics experts, psychologists and even scientists. But something had been gathering all their lives... a divorce often the coup de grace... and then it happened to them in Thailand:
Mad love and a new life.
Among the ones who could afford a car, the very few (who mostly planned to live here and work rather than just ending up here serendipitously), they follow a different route of disintegration and many of them even go back home and marry a Farang woman. Yech! That's hard to understand, too!

My statement was qualified with the quote:

I guess I travel in better circles than you.
As for the purchase of a car I based my comments on several retired expats I know who have purchased used mini-pickups and the like. These folks have commented to me on how cheap the cars like that are in LOS.
As for me, I generally do not drive in LOS, too many crazies on the road...

Traveling in circles tends to make one dizzy. I do most of my traveling in the circles between Tg's legs. I don't have any friends here that are English teachers, maybe my posting would be more correct if I did. They must be busy preparing lesson plans when I am out and about.
Driving in Thailand is not too bad once you get used to the flow of things. It is really the screwed up civil engineering that is crazy. You have to know where exactly you are going. One wrong turn and you could be in Cambodia before you can make a U-turn again.
I do see a few English teachers at the AUA school bear my office. The resemble my remark. I think most of them are British. They all huddle around outside smoking cigarettes as the school is Non-smoking.
PU trucks are the vehicle of choice for the country folks.
