Whilst the ink is still fresh on Vista’s release notes, the specialized press is already speculating on the next Microsoft OS, code named Vienna due in mid 2009 (well, given MS track record, 2012 is the more likely date). The journos and so called “experts” really love these harmless games, predicting, demanding new features they’d like to see in the new OS. Some say that Microsoft need to add features to Vienna that go beyond more efficient pointing and clicking; features such as standard support for touch screen and voice activated computing. Others expect that Vienna will be designed to act in less of a client centric manner than its predecessors and more like a conduit between the desktop and a host of services that Microsoft plans to deliver over the Web under its Windows Live initiatives. Those services include search, e-mail, and social networking tools. As always these people need to be reminded of the basic of manufacturing process: first and foremost you create a product that meets customers’ needs, make it reliable, durable and easy to live with. Subsequently, you improve functionality in adding comfort features and add-ons that well integrate with the strong architecture; you finally package it in an attractive, contemporary fashion to make people desire your product. Microsoft is like the manufacturer that having sold an unreliable car to the public, it then try to add extra accessories to the vehicle, each time they release a new model, to mask the overall shoddy bodywork and poor mechanical construction. What good is to have flashy gimmicks like illuminated vanity mirrors, bootlip protector, side & front body skirts etc…if the car breaks down a few months after it has been purchased, the interior rattles when you drive on city roads and you’re forced to go back to the dealer on regular basis to fix a myriad of annoying manufacturing defects. That is exactly what Microsoft has been inflicting on its hapless customers, mainly because of their arrogance bred from their near monopoly of computer OS. I think is high time that both Steven B. & William G. go back to school and learn the basic, the ABC of manufacturing and marketing. Any chance of that happening anytime soon? Don’t hold your breath. I think it's perfectly okay to have the 'experts' tell Microsoft what it needs to do, and to have Microsoft do all it can to make that happen.

It seems that the forthcoming iPhone has spurred the industry in a frenzy of new mobile phone releases and software companies have been quick off the block in coming with revised OS, see Windows Mobile 6. The iPhone has piqued the interest of people like no product since the iPod, and yet, that hasn’t stopped a flood of commentary on why it’ll succeed or flounder, what its flaws may or may not be, and what Apple needs to change about a device that isn’t even in the hands of one user yet. The usual journos and so called “experts” are commenting that it’s too expensive and why would users pay a hefty price for a phone that doesn’t even have 3G. Lot of people would be unwilling to pay twice as much in comparison with other smart phones and above all having to commit two years with Apple’s chosen service provider. And yet price-sensitive buyers are going to be screened out but most of urban dwellers see mobile phones as an accessory, a must be seen with fashionable item so there will be a strong demand for the iPhone in all major metropolis worldwide. Imagine of nonchalantly putting the iPhone on a restaurant table (alongside the keys of a Porsche), how many envious looks and “wow, it really looks cool” comments iPhone owners would get during social gatherings. One side effect that nobody has mentioned yet is the increase on crime; yes, people get mugged and robbed of their expensive flashy phones in the street of major cities. I can see a steep increase of these incidents in the lovely areas (not) of Brixton, Stockwell of south of London. Lots of teenagers carrying the latest Nokia or Sony-Ericsson have been beaten up and in some cases knifed in broad daylight. Sarge

I've managed to make a NAS configuration on the wireless network of the external LaCie HDD. After having formatted the drive in two partitions: one 30GB FAT 32 volume to work under Windows operating environments; one large Mac OS Extended (journaled - journaling provides a continuous record of changes to files on the hard drive) that occupies the rest of the drive. It works like a charm and as soon I connect to the network it mounts on the desktop and it's shown split in two partition; Apple & Sony for easier reference. I can drag and drop files in between partitions, which is a bonus in a cross platform (OSX & Windows XP) environment. In addition to that I have downloaded (on the Sony Vaio) a 3rd party utility Mediafour's MacDrive 6 which allows Windows computers to read and write files on a volume formatted for the Mac. Sarge

Quote: from Skip on 3:59 pm on Jan. 16, 2007 My first reaction, upon seeing the Stevenote and his demo of iPhone was they'd ripped off the work of the: Multi-Touch Interface people.
yes, you maybe right there; Jobs’ iPhone demo was so powerful that he actually made people believe that Apple invented a whole new user interface. It seems that in reality Apple took the leaf outta Jefferson Y. Han's interface-free touch driven computer screen invention. See demonstration at the TED Conference: Interactive Display, it's amazing and it give us a glimpse on how we'll interact with computers, information displays in the near future. This demo also shows the hardware elements required to use it comfortably: A drafting table screen that’s low and at a comfortable angle; a large touch screen; very powerful 3-D graphics hardware; high-performance file retrieval; and massive, raw processing power. This is how Apple and Microsft to a much greater extent change the world. They takes awesome research out of other people’s labs, polishes and perfects it, and then ship it as trendy, cuddly consumer products everyone can buy. Sarge

Quote: from DaffyDuck on 9:21 am on Feb. 11, 2007 ...and you really should give Adium a try.
ya, using Adium now. It's similar to Trillian, which have used in the past in Windows PCs. Trouble with these multi-protocol instant messaging applications is that they don't offer the same breath of customization and features found in the standalone messaging client application. They're fun for a little while, but in the end most users tend to revert to the original application. Sarge

Sorry, but when and where did Microsoft do that? Oh, wait, you said 'out of other people's labs'... and that would, I guess, including most of their R&D from Apple
