But come on EPC, admit it.

Any phone more advanced then the black PVC version with a rotary-dial is more complex then you care to deal with ...

EDGE for one. In early versions of the iPhone this could not be turned off. In version 1.1.1 you can turn it off but the default in on.

This is the real killer because of GPRS costs. (...) Now it is true that the consumer will have these costs whether his phone is locked or not but on the other hand if Apple was not getting a share of the service cost maybe they would have the default for EDGE set to 'Off' like Nokia does with their GPS-A...
Oh, right, here we go with the conspiracies... If these were done by default with the sole purpose to make Apple more money, then why was that one of the first changes in the next firmware update (Data Roaming On/Off), along with AT&T removing such initial charges from user's accounts?

You were talking in the plural, though - so, what other costly features were turned on by default?

Perhaps I could at least partially answer that question.

I bought an iphone in September and used it no problem - monthly bill about normal. But during October I spent 10 days in Vietnam and at the end of the month received a telecom bill for in excess of Bt15000.

Of course this related to roaming charges but most of it was not voice related but data. It appears that the iphones constant desire to update me about stock prices, emails etc was all well and good but it was chewing up massive edge fees.

Now I could have switched edge to off but it was on by default.....

From what I gather from the news reports I have seen, Abrak has pretty much hit the nail on the head. EDGE is the component that drives these services (stock quotes, email notices, sports scores, etc, etc) and it can quickly run up a bill for the user.

Which is the point of my post. It is beneath you to pick on semantics Duck. So it is one component that supports many services, it is still something that one should be required to configure and should warn the user of potential costs when one switches to a roaming mode....

....Sorta like what the N95 does...

15000 THB Holy Shit! Dis they send you another iPhone with that bill?

See it doesn't matter if you are free to choose your carrier, you still end up taking up the ass.

Abrak's next message

"The good news is your stock portfolio is up, the bad news after we bill you for this good news your networth will be down.

Reminds me of that colleague of mine, 5 or 6 years ago, who travelled for in Vietnam for a couple of months and, much to his surprise, ran up a bill of 120,000 Baht through voice roaming charge (he was calling home several hours per day).

This begs the question: what should be turned off? EDGE, roaming or the stupidity of users?
