Cisco Sues Apple
Cisco, Apple settle dispute over iPhone trademark New York - Cisco and Apple announced Wednesday that they had settled their trademark lawsuit over Apple's use of the name iPhone for a new portable device that includes mobile phone features. Cisco sued Apple after the Cupertino, California, maker of iPod MP3 players and Macintosh computers had grandly launched an iPhone device on January 9 with camera, digital music player, and mobile telephone capabilities. The Silicon Valley companies said in a joint statement that they "are free to use the 'iPhone' trademark on their products throughout the world." San Jose, California-based computer network giant Cisco had claimed it obtained the trademark in 2000 after acquiring Infogear, which owned the iPhone name and had been selling products bearing that name for several years. "Both companies acknowledge the trademark ownership rights that have been granted, and each side will dismiss any pending actions regarding the trademark," the statement read. "In addition, Cisco and Apple will explore opportunities for interoperability in the areas of security, and consumer and enterprise communications." Other agreement terms "are confidential," the brief statement read. Cisco Systems Inc. designs and sells networking and communications technology and services under the brands Cisco, Linksys, and Scientific Atlanta. Apple Inc. -- until January known as Apple Computer Inc. -- develops and sells personal computers and accessories such as portable music and video players. AFP

as rule of thumbs in these things, if Apple leaves the table smiling, the other company got screwed..... and Apple left the table smiling on this one. In the end everybody's a winner here, Apple gets a name which really tracks into its system of trademarks, while Cisco gets some kind of development relationship with Apple. This does well for everybody. The more likely scenario is that Cisco and Apple could partner in the near term on lower profile projects that leverage the respective strengths of the world's largest networking equipment company and the new darling of digital entertainment. It does seem that St Steve of Apple-Land has again got this gamble right, is that a good thing for consumers? Time will tell >>> Sarge

according to analysts Mozilla’s Firefox browser lost market share last month but Apple’s Safari continued to gain ground, an indicator of a slow but sure uptick in Macintosh sales. Last month, Firefox accounted for 13.7% of the browser usage market. However Windows XP still has an overwhelming lead in operating systems, with 85%. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer accounted for 79.8% of the browser market. These figures show a trend that Safari is taking shares away from PC systems, maybe because more users are switching to Mac than to Vista. Sarge

Since last week, I've been playing, on and off, with iWork 06; Keynotes a presentation program and Pages a word processor app. It can't be called a office suite as it lacks few critical apps that are the bread and butter of the business world but it does have a couple of apps that are GUI friendly, ideal for novices or home users who don't know the way around a layout program because the design is already there for you. All they have to do is put in their own text and image. After years of learning to use MS PP & Words in the hard way, by trial and error I reached a stage where I can do pretty much what I want. These are complex programs with a host of features, most of the time buried deep in the interface and not always showing a correlation with other commands in the same drop down menu. So, initially I was kind of dissing such simplistic GUI layout of iWorks 06, fit for Sunday car drivers who need to be taken by hand and shown the way. However after a while those graphics rich templates are pretty impressive, as far as they go. Unlike Word's document templates, there's no mistaking how to use them: You just start typing, and drag and drop images into their boxes, links to the IPhoto library are built right in. By default, when you launch the program you automatically see a browsable, graphical menu of the templates so you can choose one to base your document on. You can always change that in the Preference menu and force the app to start with a blank page. Keynotes is the top dog app in there, I opened a work PP presentation and quickly jazzed it up adding rich media content, drag and drop photos was a pleasure. Round tripping a Keynote file (exporting it to PowerPoint, then reimporting into Keynote) worked fine, and nothing got garbled. Occasionally it took a while for the conversion to happen on both ends. What this suite really needs is an application for crunching numbers, Excel type and a basic database would be nice bonus. Overall it’s a family, home user program for people who don’t need the full breath of commercial apps. It’s something to keep me occupied until such time Microsoft gets its act together and release MS Office for Mac 2008, with open XML format converter. That is my 2 cents worth’s 1st impression on the Apple’s productivity application. Sarge

<musing to self> Hmmm...he's playing with Keynote....'host of features'....'not always showing a correlation'....betcha Export qualifies as one of 'those'. I wonder if he tried Exporting his Keynote to Quicktime?' Now there's a pretty slick trick with an indirect correlation, if you ask me.....

no, I haven't tried that one yet, mainly played with existing files. Testing the conversion fidelity and speed rate, adding extra media etc.. Re: correlation that was a dig aimed at MS office software, I thought it was obvious in the context of the paragraph. I'll prolly get to that sometimes soon but by implication of your post it seems that you have, so if you keep thinking aloud, perhaps we can hear your experience and thoughts. Sarge

Games, let's talk about the fun stuff. I haven't purchased any games for Mac yet, I have several titles in PC platform and enjoyed playing them, sometimes got too engrossed and lost track of time. What games, if any, you guys play on your Mac? Unfortunately my all time favourite Alpha Centauri is not supported under OSX (only in previous OS version) but other popular titles are; Civilization IV and Quake 4. I've downloaded Nexuiz a freeware single player mode, shooting game. That'll train me into fighting shape for when I frag away in Quake 4. Sarge
