This begs the question: what should be turned off? EDGE, roaming or the stupidity of users?

Well not quite...

I pay Bt999 for an unlimited data plan with DTAC per month. That is the equivalent to Bt300 for 10 days unlimited data use.

Now if I go to Vietnam I can expect to pay more - say 5 times more - in which case my roaming charges would be of the order of Bt1500. As it is, my data roaming charges are over Bt10,000 which means that roaming charges in Vietnam are over 35x higher than charges in Thailand. That seems to me just plain excessive (or positively criminal) and I dont feel particularly stupid for not expecting to be charged those fees in the first place.

Has anyone checked the price of the iphone within the last week at MBK? I heard the prices have actually gone up close to the 25,000 mark. I know the prices have gone up in the Thai classifieds too.

I went to MBK and Fortune today. Cheapest was Bt 24,900, most expensive Bt 27900, most were Bt 25,900. Only tried haggling at Winner Telecom and she wouldn't budge a single satang. They said it was 1.1.2.

1.1.2 unlocked means it probably has bootloader 3.9, a pre-week 45 phone. Things are not looking good at the moment for a week 45+ software unlock. The only devices out there to unlock it are expensive hardware. geohot is depending on a baseband update to crack this. Damn!

Good for Apple. Even better for folks sitting on a bunch of firmware 1.0 Phones (not 1.02, not 1.1.1 - plain 1.0). That's why the prices are going up - because the newer basebands are getting harder to crack.

I'd feel that by the time we reach 1.5, iPhones will be pretty damn well locked down. That's all fine, I just hope Apple will take valuable markets like Thailand (which *IS* a huge market to sell iPhones, if you consider they sell out for 25K Bath right now) into consideration. I'd even go so far as to claim that Thailand may prove more important as the mobile market goes, than China.

I'll see if I can float that suggestion when I'm back.

Which is the point of my post. It is beneath you to pick on semantics Duck. So it is one component that supports many services, it is still something that one should be required to configure and should warn the user of potential costs when one switches to a roaming mode....

....Sorta like what the N95 does...
If you would so much as perform a minimum of research on what you say, you would know that data roaming is turned off by default on Firmware 1.1.1 - why was it turned on originally? Seeing as how the iPhone was rushed to market, it was an oversight that is understandable, considering the conditions -- furthermore, as someone else pointed out, some of it has to do with stupidity of the users. Roaming charges by ALL carriers are expensive, and are not the fault of Apple.

Furthermore, EDGE could easily be disabled, even in earlier versions of the firmware - and it is one of the first things the next firmware revision addressed.

You are entirely correct that you should not be expected to be paying such exorbitant fees -- nevertheless, the cost of roaming is a charge imposed by Vietnam telecom (the hosting country) and just passed on to you -- it does not take rocket science to figure out that it is your responsibility to inquire about the cost of roaming charges, before you use them. This is just common sense.

If you embark on your trip only armed with assumptions of what you ought to pay... well, then you have very little to support your outrage.

A big disadvantage to the iPhone is the inability to run privately developed apps on it.

With the Symbian OS on the Nokia it is possible to load several applications to enhance the functionality of the phone.

For example on my N95 I have loaded a SKYPE client. This means that when I am connected to the Internet by WLAN I have virtually free calls to anywhere in the world using my SKYPE account.

Also one of the coolest factors on the iPhone is the auto-rotate capability. If one loads the Symbian program rotateMe the N95 and N82 can have the capability. This month a program is being released that will not only auto-rotate the phone but will also allow the ability to scroll up/down or left/right by slight tilts of the phone. This can provide similar functionality that the iPhone touch screen does with advantage you can use it with gloves.

The question is will Apple allow independent developers to produce programs to run on its phones or will it make the same mistake it made with the early Apple computers and lock itself out of the market...

funny u mention gloves, the iphone only seems to work with bare skin, no matter how hard or soft or exactly accurate you are when you wear gloves, thick or thin

strange

yes I agree also with nokia e61 and also blackberry theres all sorts of useful external programs etc you can add and download to your hearts content

my latest bberry 8320 has inbuilt gps, so I have google maps installed and now whayhey the same as an iphone, except I dont have to pinch the screen to zoom in I just roll the track ball
i even have a theme to change all the blackberry icons into iphone icons hahaha just to remind me what I missed

Having been on iphone for the last 3 weeks I have to say that one of the weakest point is the incapability of handling Office documents [at least for what I know].
Decent phone, great web surfing and several useful and good applications [you can download from several websites] and with a little trick, also skype is there.
Now if someone would come up with a way to run also Word & Excel, then I'd be a happy man and no more need to carry around heavy laptops!
