More companies are taking pot-shots at Microsoft; Google has launched a new version of its hosted services for business communications: Apps Premier Edition. This is an upgrade of the existing free service suite, the long term goal is to wean people off from owning productivity / office software in their computer, in fact one could conceivable even not own computers at all, just pop in at the local internet shop and conduct all your business from a rented terminal. The main benefits would be: no upfront outlay on software, never worry about EULA’s, real time docs sharing and communication, access to your data anywhere in the world (don’t need to carry a computer with you). It all sounds so tempting and futuristic, however who the hell wants to put all his/her personal, work data, bank details, user & passwords accounts on a public domain? Plus one has to have an internet gateway to just access anything at all. This is even before taking in consideration the serious issues of data privacy. One may find himself, in a future scenario, to argue the case in courts against Google as to who own the data held in their servers and or if Google can be financially persecuted in case of data destruction or financial loss following a crash / hack / service shutdown. I think the idea has good merit but it needs to be refined and marketed as an addition to computer held software and not as replacement. Maybe Google, should come up with an all integrated online package and issue a free reader (as in Adobe Acrobat PDF) that can be used as industry standard to download finished files that can be read and stored (but not modified) on any computers and compatible with any OS platform. Ideally one could use computers or even USB flash memory keys, where all personal setting, preferences, bookmarks, files and display appearance are stored, saved games etc.. to access Google Premier to modify files online, share data with co-workers and browse the net, play games online. The finished files will be stored on users’ HDD or memory keys as read-only documents and NOT on servers, however the actual apps package and any other software is on Google’s. In other words both media needs each other to work but they can construed as separate entities. Sarge

Here's a tip for all computing platforms: If anyone here is a YouTube junkie, do yourself a huge favor and grab the superb freeware App- Democracy Player On the OS X front, Quicktime users might do well to install Perian 'the Swiss Army knife of QT plugins' And if you do lots of FTP CyberDuck might interest you.

guys, I need info on how to restore a profile or go back to an earlier time (system restore in Windows) if there is such thing in Mac OSX. I have mistakenly renamed the home directory and now my home directory contents and preferences appear to be lost, the subfolders are empty. Basically in renaming the home directory a new empty directory is created next time the affected user logs in. I can see that all the files are there but the system logs in with new empty directory. How do I get back to the original settings? I've tried to rename the affected directory but it doesn't work probably because I'm not using the correct old short name. I have Parallels installed with Vista Business (got a license from work) and also Office 2007, now all this is not showing in the changed home directory. I don't wanna really re-install the whole thing. Sarge

Holy guacamole! Yuk! Sorry Sarge that's beyond my skills... Sounds like something a job for the Geniuses at the Apple store. Are you near one? If not, I'd head straight for either the OS X Apple Discussions forums or MacNN Forums and search around a bit for an answer. If one doesn't turn up, start a thread. You could also have a look in the MacFixit forums

yes, renaming the home directory, changing the short name, brought some unintended consequences. Good experience for the future. In any case all the files were there so I managed to re-associate them to the home directory. It has actually forced me to look into the inner workings of OS X (performed a small hack) which I wouldn't otherwise have done. I'm still on steep side of the learning curve, until 5 weeks ago I was still labouring on Windows PC.... Later I'll post my take on Parallels and Windows Vista Business + MS Office 2007 working on an Intel based Mac. Skippy, I may beat you to the punch on this one Sarge

LOL By all means, be my guest sir! In situations such as these it's the tortoise who comes out ahead. I just read a review of the Office 2007 Outlook [mail] client and man! was it ever unkind. Apparently Office 2007 Outlook is constipated...
