Always tempting to wait for the next...coming...latest...

My iphone clone and my pal's MBK iphone (real, unlocked) have been great fun and entertainment as we partied in Thailand the past 10 days.

I suppose that everybody wants something different but for us the iphone is great. Obviously an easy phone, sms simple, good camera and photo tools, wifi access and mail checking quick, maps work fine but the Thai maps seem to be in Thai (got to think a little then, right), ipod music and games to take up the slack waiting and travelling times.

Glad we didn't wait to see what would happen, where prices would go, when it would be released in China. Hours of entertainment and the girls like to see their pictures taken, shown, flipped over (like that with them too!), enlarged etc. They were happy to have flesh pics after seeing that, easy.

The Meizu clone of mine and the iphone do pretty much the same stuff. I'm sure techies will have varying views but I get too busy drinking, partying and f@#$%ng to spend time on the tech side in Thailand.

Sad, back to work tomorrow but it was great.

Oh now, I get to show all those pictures I take with my Sony on my iPhone on a larger screen. Yeah, iPhone's camera still sucks, I will stick to my trusty Sony for taking the pictures.
Yeah, the camera is presently the one real weak point of iPhone, in so far that the 2 megapixel resolution sucks, and it's not really best dealing with varying brightness conditions. Plus, the coating on the glass gets smudged, in which case you end up with soft-focus/blurry images (and once coating is smudged, it's a pain to clean).

There's news that Google and RIMM ( the manufacturers of the Blackberry) are soon to come out with new phones that will provide stiff competition to the IPhone.

Wonder how the IPhone will fare against the competition from Google & RIMM ?
The company name is Reasearch In Motion, hence there's only one 'M'.

Personally, I'm not holding my breath regarding anything coming out of Google and/or RIM in terms of phones -- iPhone will be in its 4th or 5th generation by the time they release their version. Google's effort is laudable, but it is not aimed at iPhone, but rather at dismantling Windows Mobile.

Couple of thoughts on the future of iPhone unlocks and hacks.

The new iPhone firmware 1.1.3 is just around the corner, bringing with it a variety of real new functional improvements (again, small things, but good ones) - along with that will most likely come further developments to lock down iPhone, rendering existing unlock hacks, or activation utilities obsolete.

Considering the considerable problems unlocking the bootloader of firmware 1.1.2, I suspect Apple will continue making it harder to hack their hardware. So far, 1.1.2 bootloader 4.06 phones are not really unlockable, unless you use TurboSIM or StealthSIM methods (which I will be exploring at MBK today).

Still, with TurboSIM and StealthSIM methods, you are still left with the need to activate your iPhone, and I suspect these methods will be harder to near impossible as Apple revs the firmware.

What this means, is that we will be left with:

- using Turbo or Stealth SIM to use foreign SIM cards, as long as you initially activate your iPhone with a genuine carrier activation (AT&T, Orange, O2, T-Mobile Germany, etc...). I have no problem with this method, as I'd be using the iPhone with AT&T anyway, and I only need an option to use local SIM cards while travelling. Easy enough.

- an SBK after February that will allow Apple to provide access to third parties to provide various applications and utilities for iPhone. These will most likely be provided via iTunes for loading onto the iPhone, thus jailbreaks will no longer be needed.

The result of that will be that people can have a customizable iPhone, using Apple's way, and that the hacks will be nearly wiped out, simply because the majority of hackers will be encouraged to use the legit tools.

This will end up leaving the unlockers high and dry, which will undermine the tools that fostered the lucrative iPhone greymarket which mostly covered Asia.

Either way, looks like Apple is winning the cat and mouse game.

RIMM is what the Americans call RIM (it is the Nasdaq listing). RIM is the Toronto listing of the Blackberry manufacturer.

What is interesting is for the first time manufacturers have had something to aim at - there was the pre-iphone world and the post iphone world for mobiles.

It will be interesting to see how all the manufacturers respond and to see if Apple can stay ahead of the curve.

Summarized from a report in yesterday's London Daily Mail:

It appears that the iPhone is a major flop here in the UK. It was reported that sales were so bad over Christmas that Steve Jobs has directed that UK sales figures are not to be released to investment analysts and that a 'Pan-European' sales report will be released in its stead sometime later in January. Industry analysts in the UK report that Car Phone Warehouse and O2 (the UK retailers) have found that UK users are unwilling to buy an expensive phone when an expensive 18-month contract is attached to it.

Reading this it appears that the 'single provider' policy is failing in the UK. It does not surprise me as many of the people I know in the UK use pre-paid SIMs for their mobiles. This allows them to 'shop' for the best deal in the highly competitive UK Mobile market.

Another reason why I believe that the 'single provider' policy will limit iPhone sales in the long-run is that many younger mobile users are limited to pre-paid accounts because of a lack of credit history. Take my daughter for instance, a few years ago before she went to Uni I purchased her an iPod. If the iPhone were available I might of considered this as the most economic option if I could have tied it to her pre-paid account.

I do not know about y'all but there is no way I would give a teenage girl the open-ended access that a contract would allow.

I suspect once options similar to the iPhone come available in the un-locked market, the sales of the iPhone will plummet like a stunned falcon...

Well I think the style and coolness factor can last for only so long. Apple better be making some good announcements at this week's Mac conference in SFO or it may be a hard year for them.

In looking at the Ipods there software really has not changed that much since its introduction. Yes the iTouch is out, but it basically hasthe same functionality in the music area as the original just with a new touch based input method. It would be nice to see some new features in the units such as:

Ability to que up songs easily and clear the que (forget the cumbersome onthego playlist)

Delete songs on the Ipod and then allow user approved deletion of the computer upon syncing

Edit MP3 Tags and update songs during syncing

In iTunes it would nice to refresh your database with the software duplicating every song that you have. How about checking to see if the song exist and only add the new titles added, Geez!

With all of the majors joining in with Amazon.com offering DRM free MP3's music and Apple only having one, it appears Apple's stranglehold on the music industry is crumbling.

In Y2007 Apple had a lot of inovating products released. I doubt that Y2008 will be the same. It will probably just be improvements on the existing product set with software upgrades and more flash RAM in their Ipods.

Gotta be careful with flash-ram though. Nokia has had several problems with the flash-ram in the 8GB N95...

I really like one of the latest Iphone Apps. Its called 'ID Listen' - the iphone samples about 5 seconds of a tune and then compares it with a database and tells you what it is. Next they will add a 'buy' button and you will be able to download and buy any song you run into.

It cant handle the Thai alphanumeric characters unfortunately....

Well the hackers should be busy, in the meantime I will be busy today trademarking the name 'iPaperweight'

It appears that all currently available unofficial unlock methods for the iPhone do not work with iPhone software/firmware 1.1.3; this includes hardware-based methods like “TurboSIM” and others. Any iPhones updated to version 1.1.3 cannot be downgraded to any prior iteration of the software/firmware. As such, any users with unofficially unlocked iPhones will find their phones irrevocably (at present) unable to work on non-sanctioned carriers after applying 1.1.3.

As previously noted, iPhone software 1.1.3 also makes it impossible to use unofficial third-party applications.

To reiterate: because you can’t effectively downgrade from iPhone firmware/software 1.1.3, applying the update means no access to any unlock methods or unofficial third-party applications until (if) a new solution is discovered

I hope Daffy unloaded his phones already.

Does it listen from anything being played out? I mean, does it listen like your own ears whatever is being played in the background, at a club for example?

I have been for years waiting for this. This would certainly increase sales for songs as many people would impulsively buy what they hear on the spot and like. I would.
