To reiterate: because you can’t effectively downgrade from iPhone firmware/software 1.1.3, applying the update means no access to any unlock methods or unofficial third-party applications until (if) a new solution is discovered

I just got a 'sell' note in my inbox headed 'disappointing sales of iphone'. 4m sales of the iphone in 4 months might seem pretty good going for your first phone but I tend to agree with them. The iphone is almost certainly the greatest innovation in the mobile phone there has been in the last ten years, so 4m sales looks pretty feeble when you think Motorola has sold 40m of the uninspiring Razr over the last 2 years.

In essence, I think the Apple marketing team have blown it with their international distribution. The phone has sold well in the states but it was priced way too high in Europe and sales have been disappointing. And as for the remains of the world, it hasnt even been released and that is criminal. By the time it makes it to Thailand, noone will want it and the competition will have caught up.

Now I am sure Daffy will tell me I dont know what I am talking about and that their marketing plan is pure genius but I am sure they are going to look back and say that they botched things up big time.

A couple of problems with iPhone internationally. In order to get the same type of revenue sharing they have partnered with providers that make it too expensive to use the data features that the iPhone is selling for. So it is not that the phone is too expensive, but you have both an expensive phone and an expensive contract.

I personnally do not think the 3G capability is a problem. The biggest problem is the inability to change out SIM's. Most business people want to swap out the SIM's and use the much lower local company rates instead of raoming charges.

I think somebody better tell Steve Jobs that the emperor is wearing no clothes or in his case turtleneck sweaters went out a long time ago.

All these extra apps on the iTouch. How about improving the music features after all it is a MP3 player. Still no ability to create an easy cue list, purge the cue, delete a song and have this deletion sync up with iTunes, edit MP3 tags.

In fact, best the touch features on the iTouch nothing has changed much on the Ipods OS since the first one.

I hope Daffy unloaded his phones already.
Why? It simply means that my stock of UNLOCKABLE and UPGRADEABLE iPhones just went up in value.

I unloaded half of my stash for a good price, but still have a bunch that I kept back.

Plus, work on a 1.1.3 jailbreak continues, and so far, 1.1.3 units have been seen to get downgraded successfully. Still, hacks and jailbreaks are getting harder, if not eventually impossible. Apple is smart, and the majority of hackers out there aren't.

quoteth the armchair CEO with nary any perspective.

Regarding international, or rather, Asian marketing -- the majority of users in Asia do not use contracts, but rather pre-pay cards, and that there is very little carrier loyalty, or lock-in. Apple knows this. How they will utilize this, will be interesting.

Again, comparing a cheap Motorola phone that not only has been out for over 2 years, from a company that has had decades of experience, to a first-phone entrant in the same market is disingenious, at best... particularly if you are not privvy to Apple's strategies.

Well I still stand by that Apple has lost Touch with its MP3 base customers with the iTouch. Who the hell is asking for these new feature apps when most would like to see some kind of update to the music player's software functionality.

Good point - personally, I find the Touch interface a great innovation when it comes to the iPhone, less so when it comes to 'just' an iPod -- the click-wheel, in my opinion, is a far better interface for a music player, and the current revised interface works quite well.

As it stands, the iPod Touch is a good multi-media player, but the Touch interface simply doesn't work by touch alone (ie. you have to see what you are doing, and you can't feel your way along, like with the click wheel).

Aside from that, I don't really see what else to 'improve' with the music player functionality.

As for the 'useless' apps that were added to the Touch, sadly those were clamored for by a great many users of the Ipod Touch - and now that Apple provides them, these same folks are bitching about a measly $20.

To Abrak,

Disclaimer: I own apple so I am biased.

Sell apple because of the sales volume of one of their products? What is the profit margin of each iphone sold? That is the real measure of that one product's success. If you haven't noticed iMacs are becoming hugely popular and other versions of ipod are virtually without competition in the mp3 market.

Sell? Go ahead throw the baby out with the unanalysed bathwater, I'll buy it up while it's on sale.

Excellent - I will gladly buy your undesirable AAPL stock off you.

Considering it was at $200 a couple of weeks ago, and now resides at around $160, it appears that you belong to the class of investors that believes in selling when stock is low (and undoubtedly buying when it is high?) - or just the kind of investor that would rather believe and trust their money to guys working in cubicles..?

Either way, let me know when you are ready to sell.

Actually, I wasn't trying to criticize Abrak and say he's this or that. Rather trying to show him how his reasoning appears to me. It appears he is considering the advice of emails as opposed to thinking this through on his own.

My thoughts are in my previous post. The iphone could disappear and apple would do just fine.

I bought apple in Feb 07 at $83 and it's now at $160ish. So it's pretty much doubled in a year. That's the kind of company they are. I'll sell it at $90 or $240, nothing in between.
