A few more thoughts. The Razr is a well know turd, like everything else motorolla makes. Get a job where you have to use their land mobile radios to communicate and you'll know hell.

Apple pretty much sticks to high quality stuff which sells at a juicy profit, so having the widest selling anything isn't the main goal. True this prevents penetrating every market worldwide, but as long as nearly every unit produced is sold, we're making money.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 21 January 2008 :-

AIS in talks with Apple to sell iPhones
=============================

Advanced Info Service (AIS) has joined with strategic partner Singapore Telecom (SingTel) to bring Apple's much-touted iPhone to the region, including Thailand.

Chief marketing officer Sanchai Thiewprasertkul said AIS has been in talks with Apple in the US for several months to win the rights to import iPhones.

The iPhone has touched off a new design revolution, as it does away with keys and makes use of a large screen display.

Mr Sanchai said that AIS, in collaboration with SingTel and the Australian mobile operator Optus, were discussing phone volumes, marketing terms and business model partnerships.

He declined to elaborate, but said some conditions still could not be settled.

Mr Sanchai said Apple usually asked operators to bundle iPhones with postpaid plans and share revenue with it. That model simply doesn't work in Thailand.

''Given our one baht a minute of airtime, it would not make sense and would be impossible for us to share revenue with Apple,'' he said, adding that more than 90% of mobile-phone users are prepaid.

He also acknowledged that the Thai handset market was considered small compared with the 300 million people in the United States.

Mr Sanchai also said that up to 60,000 iPhones have been smuggled into Thailand so far. They sell for about 22,000 baht, compared with only 14,000 baht in the US.

Kuladist Smuthkochorn, general manager of Wireless Device Supply (WDS) Co, the handset distribution arm of AIS, said the company expected to sell 4.2 million handsets this year out of 8.5 million industry-wide, up from 3.75 million out of 8.1 million. last year

It aims to sell up to 600,000 its own Phone-One brand handsets this year, up from 150,000 last year, tripling the model's market share to 6% by year-end.

However, Mr Kuladist said revenue would decline to 11.7 billion from 12.7 billion last year because 65% of industry-wide sales were now basic phones priced between 2,000 and 3,000 baht.

The local handset industry was expected to be valued at 32 billion baht this year, compared with 35 billion in 2007. He added that intense competition in the local handset market has resulted margins shrinking to just 1-2%.

Got rid of my 1.1.2 phones in MBK yesterday. Best price I can get is about 18,500. The unlock is now available but requires that you open up the phone. Rumor is a software unlock is coming soon.

..... it appears that you belong to the class of investors that believes in selling when stock is low (and undoubtedly buying when it is high?) - or just the kind of investor that would rather believe and trust their money to guys working in cubicles..?

LOL! Obviously you do not know the guy.

I do not know about each of these guys fortune. But if offered to buy a $1 ticket to play the lottery having to choose between two possible prizes: 1/10 of Abrak´s net worth or 10 times DD´s net worth.... I would go for the first one.

Now, either love it or hate it, but Apple deserves some credit. Al least it does get our attention here. What other non-sexual topic in the forum can claim 40 pages in just over 6 months?

ThaidUp

My thoughts are in my previous post. The iphone could disappear and apple would do just fine.

I don't think so. Maybe fine, but not rising in value. The iPhone is one of the four legs of a stool of revenues, but they do not have to capture a big market share to do this.

Remember Apple continues to earn monthly revenue for each phone out there to date. Something no other phone provider is doing.

I think people underestimate the impact of movie rentals will have with Apple income stream. I am prediciting it will be big. I am using it myself and it works fine with me. Now I am able to get uncensored versions of movies in Thailand.

The BKK post article for more detailed, though - this is just the typical watered down stuff making it to US shores (as always)

Apple negotiates for Thai iPhone rights

Apple's latest attempt at negotiating international distribution of the iPhone is in Thailand, according to reports. Reuters cites Prattana Leelapanang, the assistant VP of wireless business marketing for Thailand's Advanced Info Service (AIS) ; according to Leelapanang, his company is already discussing the details of an arrangement with Apple, including revenue sharing. The last point is particularly notable, as neither Apple nor its telecom partners have in the past admitted to revenue sharing, although it is a widely accepted fact amongst analysts.

AIS owns approximately 50 percent of the Thai cellular market, at 24.5 million subscribers. It is not known when the iPhone might premiere with AIS, but there is unlikely to be a rush, as the company is still planning a test of 3G broadband services. Consequentially, the current 2.5G iPhone is likely to be sufficient. Apple and AT&T have promised a 3G iPhone by the end of 2008.

Thailand represents a third front in Apple's Asian deployment plans. The company is said to be in talks with Japanese carriers NTT DoCoMo and Softbank, and it recently broke off negotiationswith leading Chinese provider China Mobile, allegedly over revenue-sharing issues. If it does not reconcile with China Mobile, Apple will have to turn to the country's only other wireless carrier, China Unicom.

Actually, I wasn't trying to criticize Abrak and say he's this or that. Rather trying to show him how his reasoning appears to me. It appears he is considering the advice of emails as opposed to thinking this through on his own.
Personally, I think he just threw out that statement as a foil. I doubt very much he'd be so dumb as to follow a broker's advice - seems more like he was throwing this out as an illustration of how shortsighted his brokers are...

I bought apple in Feb 07 at $83 and it's now at $160ish. So it's pretty much doubled in a year. That's the kind of company they are. I'll sell it at $90 or $240, nothing in between.
I bought my first few measly shares at $13. Then, some more a few years ago at $25, then my recent buying spree at $130. Overall, I'd say, the stock has done well for me, despite 'warning's by various broker analysts Personally, I'm holding out for $300, at which point I *may* sell 50% of my holdings, and let the rest ride.

On a more hopeful level, I'm hoping the AAPL reaches over $340/share, as at that point I would expect a crazy-ass momentum in AAPL buying to kick in. Can you guess why?

Couldn’t agree more. Apple has certainly messed things up pretty badly with China Telecom. China has the potential of becoming a bigger market for Apple than is Europe - with their Nokias’.
For the iPhone, in its present form, not really - the majority of China Telecom's claimed 350 million users do not use high-end smartphones, but the $25-$30 cheap-O Nokia - this isn't to mean it stays that way. If history is any indicator, Apple will eventually diversify their iPhone offerings into more basic models, at which point that market could explode in another 2-3 years' time.

Apple's sales team don't realize that the Apple brand name doesn't have the rabid adherents to it's products outside of the USA - a blinkered global overview ( as exemplified by the Duck - sorry Daffy ; just couldn't resist).
None taken -- though if Apple's brand name means so little outside the US, then how come iPod and iPhone clones are the most cloned products by the Chinese market?

Furthermore, Apple in Japan, in their class, commands a more sizeable marketshare than in the US. Case in point, the iPod has eclipsed SONY's home brands in Japan, and recently Apple OS X Leopard gobbled up a 53% share of Japan's OS market.

http://www.iht.com/articles/1992/02/24/appl.php

Yes, other parts of the world are not that fortuitous (in Korea, Apple's iPod shares hovers around single-digits), but judging how well iPhones and iPods are received in Thailand, Hong Kong, and other parts of Asia, I'd say Apple's mindshare in the rest of the world is comfortably growing stronger.

We’ll know on Jan 22 how Apple’s Christmas sales have gone.

Am holding on to AAPL not because of the IPhone, but because of their Macs’ + other gizmos.
Do be sure to include 'movie rentals' in the 'other gizmos' category, as this stands to become a huge business over the next year, for Apple.

When + if, AAPL reaches 200 + I’ll dump my AAPL stock. Hope that day is not too far away.
It was at $200 a month ago. It should head back that way within the next 3 months. I'd suggest dumping 50% of your stock, and letting the rest ride - $200 is far from the end of that ride, IMO.

My office has just offered to buy me a PDA so that I can check my email while on the move. They suggested Blackberry, but I don't want to change my number from the current DTAC network to AIS. I need push mail so is iphone an option, or Viewty or something else?
I'm lost when it comes to this sort of thing so would appreciate some help. I also need a good quality camera.

What does your office use for their internal e-mail? If Exchange, then Blackberry is pretty much your only reliable choice (as long as your office runs the Blackkberry server component). Otherwise, if you office runs regular IMAP or POP, you can use an iPhone, and set up the email retrieval the regular way - iPhone will automatically check at 15 minute intervals.

Depending on your need, and your office configuration, the Blackberry may, at the moment, be better suited - or the Nokia E65 (I think) would be another choice.

The Nokia's have better cameras, in my opinion.
