i think, if there is one thing i'm bothered by is the fact that I couldn't wait to buy it...i know that a new series of systems are coming out soon, but damn, I HAD to have the machine!

I know the feeling!

For you control freak, there is this little, handy utility iPulse. A monitoring software that lets you keep an eye on what’s going in in the innermost workings of the Mac: CPU activity, system load, RAM usage, disk space, network activity etc. it also supports 8-core Mac Pro.

It looks like that Microsoft Zune player is set to follow Apple iPod lead and reach a deal with EMI to sell songs online without DRM software attached to it. History seems to have a knack to repeat itself, where Apple leads Microsoft follows, albeit MS seem to react faster lately.

But what a smart move from EMI, just when their revenues were flagging and there are rumours of a take over, they decided to jump on Stevie-boy's bandwagon and sell DRM free music at 256kbps files, upgraded from 128kbps to justify 30% premium (standard DRM 128kpps tracks retail at 99¢ - higher quality 256kbps DRM-FREE tracks now retail at $1.29). In one go they dramatically raised their profile with end users (everybody dislikes DRM), increased their sales and market share, staved off a looming take over and appeared as the good guys in the press.

Obviously other music companies may be (reluctantly) forced to follow suit after a while, Edgar Bronfman, the chief executive of Warner Music, in the past dismissed the argument to remove DRM as being “completely without logic or merit”.
Up Yours Edgar!

yup, it does look impressive, just read the Tech Spec page. However, how will OS X Tiger cope when you load up the monster with 16GB of 667MHz DDR2 ECC RAM? I think that's a job for (the forthcoming) OS X Leopard in 64-bit mode.
Just means that Leopard is more or less around the corner...

thanks for the info, mr. duck, now how's about something challenging...

i have a bunch of.bin files d/l'd from usenet in this file format:
filename.001.bin
filename.002.bin
etc...

from what i've read stuffit expander is supposed to take care of the.bin portion. unfortunately, I keep getting an error when extracting the files.

any chance you know of another utility that will help me out with this?

thanks.

What's the error dialog state?

Generally, Stuffit Expander works for me on *compliant* BIN files (and therein lies the rub, doesn't it).

Generally, your usenet reader should take care in expanding and extracting the BIN files into a useable format (I use Panic Software's UNISON), after which you are usually left with.par files, which MacPar Deluxe subsequently handles.

Can you share some details on the kinds of files you download, and what the final destination file is supposed to be?

FASTMAC is releasing a Blu-ray optical disk upgrade for Apple computers. It replaces the existing optical drives with a low profile Blu-ray model. However you'd need Roxio’s Toast 8 Titanium or other third-party software compatible with Blu-ray disc drives in order to add support in the Mac OS X Finder. At the mo neither iTunes or iLife offer native support for Blu-ray burning, but that may change with Leopard. We shall see.

Worth considering if one owns the 17" version of MacBook Pro as it has the optimum screen resolution of 1680x1050 pixels (the 15.4" has a lower resolution of 1440x900) for watching HD movies. I hope that Apple is going to surprise us and ship next G MacBook Pro models with Blue-ray drive as standard, thus upping the res antes.
