For those seeking to unlock an iPhone 3G for travel (for example), there's a product called FuriouSIM out which allegedly allows you to quickly and more or less easily make the iPhone 3G recognize your alternate carriers.
I ordered a couple of them to test out - in the US, Europe, as well as on my next Thailand trip.

Something interesting happened. I used to Pwnage Tool, and it refused to recognize the Bootloader v3.9, after a few attempts, I decided to use QuickPwn, but that didn't work either as it said that it couldn't work with the firmware on the iPhone. I read the comments on the blog, and noticed someone saying, that I needed to use iTunes 8 to upgrade to v 2.1 and then use QuickPwn. Now, here is something interesting, after upgrading to 2.1, I didn't need to do anything after that, it works! Didn't need the QuickPwn after all. Weird! But I am not complaining.

i just been in manila where they are selling 8gb 3g iphones for 40,000 pesos from the apple shop
i used my one from italy here with a globe prepay sim and it worked fine, maps, youtube 3g etc
