Apparently, this week's (well, today's) forecast on AAPL places it at $300:

http://www.macnn.com/articles/08/01/30/apple.stock.300/

Gene Munster placed it at $250 earlier n Monday.

Yeah, plenty of erratic guesswork going on. Undoubtedly, these guesses will be revised several more times during the next month.

I dont know. I think the forecasts for Apple's stock price here are way too optimistic. My guess is that at US$200 we have already seen the high for the year - Apple is looking increasingly like yesterday's story - not in terms of fundamentals which still look great - but in terms of making money out of the stock.

First take a look at the share price chart - it looks horrible after the recent collapse. All the momentum of the last 5 years has been lost. It will take an awful lot of effort to regain old highs.

And on boring old fundamentals what is it worth? Well Apple reckons it will make US$0.94 this quarter - it will probably do US$1. For the full year the company will probably make US$6 EPS - on a PE of say 25x that makes it worth US$150 a share.

Oh well it was fun while it lasted....

Oh wow, you sound just like one of my broker/analyst/advisors -- said the almost exact same thing when AAPL was at $13, at $65, at $85, etc...

It's nice to look at just fundamentals when you're looking at produce or commodity manufacturers (like toilet paper), or just at raw numbers and formulas for the same. On the other hand, you're helping me understand the mindset of so-called investment analysts, and why they are completely out of their element when it comes to a company like AAPL.

In essence (and this is speculation on my part), but AAPL does not play by your same rules, which is why it appears to be increasingly difficult for analysts to be able to provide accurate predictions on AAPL - you combine that with a general lack of vision, and a lack of understanding of that industry, and AAPL's position in it, and you end up with 'predictions' like Abrak's, which pretty amounts to flailing arms and plenty of guesswork.

The thing about Apple is that they are usually pretty good at being 3-5 steps ahead of the game - meaning they anticipate possible downturns or saturations in their markets, and set out to compensate for them. So, yes, iPod shipments were less than a year ago, but iPod profits were significantly higher than in that same period (i.e. the company made more money, for those slow to follow). Furthermore, with the iPhone and iPod Touch, Apple is also introducing and pushing a new platform, specifically their WiFi platform - combining that with the upcoming applications direct sales market (i.e. over WiFi), Apple is setting up an additional revenue stream *and* a new platform direction that will take shape over the next year, but also that will drive more iPod sales, again.

The same with AppleTV - I see the rental movie as a business with a huge potential for the future, both for Apple directly (i.e. via iTunes rentals), but also for the AppleTV line (which has its software delayed by another week or two, sadly).

So, Abrak, yeah, if Apple were standing still, and just living off their laurels, and waiting for their star to fade (you know, like pretty much every other company out there), then you would be right. As it stands, I'd suggest you look at more than just number.

"Apple is looking increasingly like yesterday's story" - you *are* funny, though, when you say stuff like that. You should really consider getting your analysis' published. I hear there's guys making a tidy income at that business of being wrong, but in a funny way.

I thought you said the easy money was shorting the US Dollar vs. the Thai Baht. Hope you didn't take your own advice at the beginning of the year and do that with REAL money. You'd have a lot less for STs.

Let's see if technology analysts have anything smarter to say. Here is an extract from a very recent release by Gartner:

By 2011, Apple will double its U.S. and Western Europe unit market share in Computers. Apple's gains in computer market share reflect as much on the failures of the rest of the industry as on Apple's success. Apple is challenging its competitors with software integration that provides ease of use and flexibility; continuous and more frequent innovation in hardware and software; and an ecosystem that focuses on interoperability across multiple devices (such as iPod and iMac cross-selling).

Let's see if technology analysts have anything smarter to say. Here is an extract from a very recent release by Gartner:
Sadly, despite having something seemingly positive to say about Apple, Gartner continues a long track record of not really knowing what they are talking about.

Making predictions 3 years in advance seems relatively silly, considering that a little over a year, or even 6 months ago, they were filled with doom and gloom predictions on the same subject. The problem of these guys, as I pointed out earlier, is that they fixate on a specific moment in time, and assume nothing will change over the next several years - neither the economy, nor the company, nor the world markets. Unrealistic, at best -- idiotic, at worst.

Personally, I set myself an AAPL target of the equivalent of $250-$300 for a 5-year mark (compensated should the stock split, which I doubt, though). I also believe that a computer marketshare of 15-20% within that time frame is possible, that they will maintain a 75+ percentage of the music marketshare, and that Apple will manage a healthy percentage (10-12%) of the worldwide mobile phone marketshare within that time.

Do the math, Msrs Stock Analysts, if you can, what those numbers would translate to, in terms of profits and holdings EPS for Apple - you should be able to do that, if you truly claim to be analysts.

Optimistic? You bet - But that's just me, little over-optimistic me.
