Help! I need help.

I'm overwhelmed with dual documents- I got versions here there and everywhere.

Ever since I bought an Intel Mac Mini I've been shuttling files between that and the trusty G4 Powerbook with a 2GB Sandisk thumb drive and/or my 30GB iPod.

Now I'm drowning in duplicity. I need something to compare folders full of files that will pitch the dupes and restore my sanity.

What app. is my savior?

The Open Firmware Password is cool to scare people off. You can configure it in different ways - one of them is that you have to type in a password every time you power the machine up, before it even starts into OS X.

But as far as I remember, it is not too difficult to get around this.

Say the thief had gotten around this, but Graham did get his PowerBook back: he would then "at least" know that the thief did have access to his data. But there are other ways of additionally protecting important data.

About as ironclad as pudding.

Takes less than 4 minutes.

It's great to keep people out that don't know any better, but if you actually know the technology, the system is compromised in less than 5 minutes.

If you have been editing the files, and not keeping track of them and their versioning (or not working out a method, ahead of time, to avoid duplicity, then no app can help you.

Why were you moving files back and forth, instead of just working *from* the thumb drive, which would have avoided this fiasco.

This may assist you:

A healthy WARNING though - these 'find duplicate' utilities have a high risk of people inadvertently deleting the wrong files, or all their files. Use at your own risk.

Um... Because I DIDN'T have a portable 160 gb - 2.5 drive handy? LOL

Thanks for the link. I'll put it to good use.

and you were moving 160gb of data around 2gb at a time, with a slow thumb drive? Yikes!

In essence USB memory keys have long replaced the old floppy disks as portable storage device. They are not meant as back up HDD and nor would I use them as primary working area. I have set up a simple briefcase in my 4GB key and I use to sync selected folders in my work PC. All the work and file editing is done in my laptop and when finished I just insert the key in and sync folders. Simple and effective and I have files and back up.pst data at my keyring inside my pocket.

The unsaid danger of Graham's story is not so much the loss of his laptop (expensive as it may be) and nor the loss of application / software loaded in his machine but rather the loss of files, contacts, photos, music, videos and so on

In my case the loss of my personal & work documents and intellectual works far outweight the cost of the MacBook Pro and all the software loaded in it. That is why I have different back up set ups in different formats, external HDD, flash memory, optical DVDs and online storage to protect me against theft / loss / damage.

Computers can be replaced (at a cost) but your intellectual works, contacts, files are priceless and once lost they are irreplaceable. Morale of the story back up your data and take an insurance to pay for new computer.

Downloaded a 30 days FREE APERTURE TRIAL (a whopping 136MB file) to get a feel of the software, what it can do and how quick/slow runs on my Mac. I'll give it a fair crack of the whip and later posts my thoughts here.

I believe you will find yourself impressed by it on many levels, but at the same time do give Adobe Lightroom a crack as well - as people that compared them mention that it does give Aperture a run for the money in some parts (havent checked it out myself yet).

I'm being kept busy with Adobe CS3, and checking it out. Nice so far, fast on intel Macs, and well worth the upgrade.
