Agreed on both counts - it's certainly going to be interesting, and an interesting opportunity for the field to play chess with Steve Ballmer.

Personally, if I were Yahoo, I would let Ballmer buy me out, cash the check, and the resign - along with the rest of my staff. MS can then clearly be counted upon to proceed to destroy Yahoo, and drive whatever is left into insignificance.

Otherwise, it might be interesting to see Google, Apple and others band together, to make a series of counter-offer for Yahoo, drive the price way above $44 billion, and once they get Microsoft to overbid at $65 billion, step away, and let them assume the debt to afford their final bid.

Likewise, it may be a smart maneuver of Steve Ballmer's to drive his competitors into a frenzy of trying to 'save' Yahoo, and over extend themselves financially, while never having had any intention to acquire Yahoo... No, wait, that takes intelligence, strategic thinking, and the kind of mindset that Steve Jobs would have -- so, cross off that possible strategy.

Either way, it all goes back to that Steve Ballmer quote I posted earlier, and CS is certainly right on one thing - it's going to be very entertaining.

It would be a very stupid move for Apple to acquire Yahoo. Microsoft needs to buy innovation as they don't have anything new themselves. Always a day late, but not a dollar short. They were late to the Internet and not they are playing catch up again. The only ones yelling "Yahoo" is the stockholders of Yahoo

Some are even dreaming of Steve Jobs as a white knight for Yahoo...

Sounds like a nightmare for Daffy - not that it would happen. But if it did his stock would be at US$100.

I agree with Daffy... Yahoo shareholders should take their money and run. MS cant given get their operating system out on time - how are they going to integrate two software companies like this. The best guys will leave and they will be left with the losers.

MS's business model is crumbling fast that is why they are scrambling for acquisitions. People simply arent prepared to pay US$400 for an operating system or MS Office any more. It is being eroded by Apple at the high end - high priced better products - and google - free simple products - at the low end.

This acquisition is an act of desperation. Yahoo was another company going nowhere. They would be better giving money back to shareholders.

Aol cost Time Warner US$180bn - an overvaluation of at least US$140bn - the most in corporate history.

Yes especially with the popular Open Office software suite. There must be a flurry of resume writing going on at Yahoo the only question is whether they use Yahoo or Gmail to send them out.

Oh yeah, especially right now, I have a feeling lots of Yahoo mail users are switching to GMail.

Yahoo lost lots of cred in Asia/China when they gave up Chinese dissidents (of course, most switchers switched to Hotmail, I'd assume), and Yahoo was a ship drifting in the wind waiting for any windfall -- in their present condition, there won't be any White Knight coming, and it certainly won't be Apple - that's a wishful thinking balloon floated by Jerry Yang.

The best thing, honestly, to do is to sell, and subsequently walk away.

You're right that it won't happen, but if it were, I'd buy more stock

Which is exactly what's been happening at Microsoft, and what's accelerating lately.

Can't wait to see how this will pan out. I really wish you could short stock over 5 years' time...

Apple traditionally releases stuff on Tuesdays.

This is not a surprising development - Apple needed to bring the price premium back up, and they did this with the $100 raise for the premium models.

- First of all, this will allow Apple to raise prices now, and upon release of the 3G model, price it at $499, drop existing 16GB model to $399, and maintain a healthy profit margin.

- lots of people were waiting for an iPhone with larger capacity. They will jump off that fence now.

- with the release of the SBK, and the ensuing wave of new third-party software for the iPhone, even existing iPhone users will find themselves potentially running out of space on their existing units - motivating them to upgrade to the 16GB model.

- at which point, when the time comes, Apple can dump a crapload of 8GB on the market through their refurbished store, at $299 - at which time these models will all have latest firmware and baseband, and thus will be virtually unlock-proof.

This combined line-up, strategically coming together towards the end of the year (have you heard of 'Christmas'), will allow them to slowly accelerate sales towards the end of the year.

Yeah, those news of Apple scaling back iPhone production? They are scaling back production of the 8GB iPhones - for good reason. I'm going to predict/assume that the 16GB iPhones contain different innards, and are more efficiently built (i.e. resulting in further better profits for Apple from their sales).

Nicely done.

I would say that prediction is completely wrong. The difference in memory between 8G and 16G is one wire. It was probably designed in the beginning to accomendate higher memory probably 32G and just wait for flash memory manufacturer;s to come down to the right price point.

As it stands now, I will not buy a iPhone and stick with SONY's as they have the features that I commonly use.

But, the memory increase is what I was waiting for on the iTouch, I thought 16G was too small and not worth the price set. The only surprise was the early release. I thought Apple would hold off until Sept. I wonder how far out the 64G model is?

I think the drop off in orders is people waiting for a phone that has more features such as 3G, GPS and replaceable SIM's The addition of replaceable memory cards such as SDmicro would also be nice.

I think the initial wave of iPhone selling off of the back of a new OS is dying fast and they better be coming out with new models with more features to revive sales.

What I find really amazing is Apple's ability to keep secrets. There were no leaks of any future memory upgrades anywhere on so-called Apple Inside, Apple rumours. They keep better secrets than the US government.

Well, there were some rumors about this memory increase, at least for the iPhone, around macworld SF time. Apple may have decided at the time it was not something worthy to be announced then and preferred to use a less prominent Tuesday to announce it.

Minor stuff in any case.
