I think the drop off in orders is people waiting for a phone that has more features such as 3G, GPS and replaceable SIM's The addition of replaceable memory cards such as SDmicro would also be nice.

Are you talking of the Samsung i780? It is already here.

This is not a surprising development - Apple needed to bring the price premium back up, and they did this with the $100 raise for the premium models.

- First of all, this will allow Apple to raise prices now, and upon release of the 3G model, price it at $499, drop existing 16GB model to $399, and maintain a healthy profit margin.

- lots of people were waiting for an iPhone with larger capacity. They will jump off that fence now.

- with the release of the SBK, and the ensuing wave of new third-party software for the iPhone, even existing iPhone users will find themselves potentially running out of space on their existing units - motivating them to upgrade to the 16GB model.

- at which point, when the time comes, Apple can dump a crapload of 8GB on the market through their refurbished store, at $299 - at which time these models will all have latest firmware and baseband, and thus will be virtually unlock-proof.

This combined line-up, strategically coming together towards the end of the year (have you heard of 'Christmas'), will allow them to slowly accelerate sales towards the end of the year.

Yep, that's the standard discourse. Even sounds like that of a tech analyst... But it also fails to mention several key issues which in effect mean that Apple has probably no firm idea yet what its iPhone 2.0 (that's what people really expect) will look like, in terms of features and pricing.

I think Apple is currently in learning mode and is little by little adjusting its strategy to a market and environment it does not know well yet, particularly as this environment is significantly more segmented than what it is used to for its other products and that this is somewhat slowing down the way Apple transforms the market. And this learning/adjustment process is a good thing, for Apple and for us and so far, wobbles and adjustments set aside, Apple seems to be on the right direction.

Also; a somewhat facetious question to Daffy; would you rather share your bed with an Apple phone, or other Apple product, or, with a luscious TG ? Just curious.
Uhm... damn, that's a dilemma... Argh!

I've got it, I'll buy her an iPhone, and that way I can have her, and while she is glued to the iPhone, it won't be far either... Yes, that's the solution.

Yeah, and it looks like a very innovative copy of the Motorola Q, which is nothing else but an unimaginative copy of the Blackberry and Nokia e61i. Of those, only the Nokia and the Blackberry have halfway usable user interfaces.

That Samsung Ugly phone is already doomed by its use of WM6. Again, most of these 'competitors' (I hesitate to use that term) are good at cobbling together a bunch of features and functions, but they all end up severely curtailed in their functionality by terrible user interface design (and, again, I use the word 'design' with hesitation).

Aside from the non-features described earlier, I particularly find it amusing that a lot of luddites (talking generally, here) dissing the 'high price' of the iPhone, point to 'their' favorite mobile as a much better deal.

Case in point, the Nokias:

- Nokia N82 (the newest) - $629
- Nokia N80 - $550
- Nokia N73 - $500
- Nokia e61i - $570
- Samsung i780 - $700
- Blackberry 8700 - $600
- Motorola Q - $450

In light of that, it's kind of amusing to replay an interview with Steve Ballmer, before the iPhone launch, calling it 'The Most Expensive Phone, Ever", and then going on about how Microsoft sells so many more

http://arstechnica.com/journals/microsoft.ars/2007/04/30/ballmer-says-iphone-has-no-chance-to-gain-significant-market-share

(newsflash - iPhone now outsells WindowsMobile phones).

Samsung i780 looks very expensive for US$700, but it does have lots of things -like the Nokia N95, but smaller.

The one I am liking is the Samsung f700.

http://www.yourmobilephonereviews.co.uk/samsung_f700_reviews.htm

And you can find it for just over US$ 300.

Your comments are not strictly accurate because you are not comparing Apples with apples so to speak.

The 'US$499' price of an iphone in the US is the price of a phone with a contract.

If you want to buy an 'official' sim free iphone - available in Germany and France - the price is nearer US$900.

Similarly if you are happy to say buy the Nokia N82 with a contract it is available absolutely free with companies such as O2 in the UK.

But from a purely 'Thai' perspective you are indeed correct - I would guess that a cracked contract iphone would be cheaper than an N82.

Actually, no, and you know it - anyone can go into an Apple Store, and purchase an iPhone for $399 (it's $499 only for he 16GB version). You are not required to sign up for a contract. In fact, even in an AT&T store, no one will try to sell you, or suggest you need a contract, or try to prevent you to leave the store without a contract.

In the case of a contract phone, you would not be able to leave the store, without signing up for the contract, in order to get the phone ridiculously cheap.

This is not the case with the iPhone, and you know that.

If you want to buy an 'official' sim free iphone - available in Germany and France - the price is nearer US$900.
a) it is no longer available in Germany. It is only available in France.

b) The prices are as follows, and in the case of France, it is a subsidized plan (except for the unlocked option) :

€399 ($585 US) for an iPhone, with an Orange iPhone plan.
€549 ($800 US) for an iPhone, using a different Orange plan.
€649 ($950 US) for an iPhone with no obligation to Orange.
To unlock any of these requires an additional €100 during the first 6 months of ownership, and no additional charge (i.e. €zero) after 6 months.

Thus, the final price for a fully unlocked French iPhone is €749 ($1,095). (Though, depending on who you ask, there are claims for it to be €799 ($1,170 US).
