Let’s play a little guesswork game here; last year when Apple presented Leopard OS X to the public it showed a number of features/improvements over Tiger. At that time, Steve Jobs clearly stated that there were some more features, which they were still working on. Kind of “secret” features and since then the rumour mill is going around the Mac community. Everybody is waiting for WWDC07 for the final release. Let’s pin down just one new feature, that ain’t in the official press release and then fish this thread in 6 months time to see who’d got it right. Closing time is Tuesday 30th April. Here is Leopard OS X, as it stands now.

My prediction is.... iSuite:
A com software that will sync iPhone with the computer, offering advanced media solution. Kind of iTunes-cum-iTV appl, it’ll seamlessly work also with Mail and iCal. A unified control centre that will allow you to interact with your iPhone. Considering that iPhone will be powered by ad hoc version of Leopard OS X, UI will look consistent across the board.

Obviously what I’d really want is “iCrossOver” kind of built-in application, that will let Micro$oft Office 2007 and other PC business software run on Mac OS X without needing Windows OS as spring board. But we all know the old adage “it's not what you want but what you get”

At this point in technological time, I'd think you're iSuite idea is very doable, Sarge. It could be a sensible extension of the.mac domain, too.

As far as you're iCreative, check out this third party app.
[And I AM talking to everyone reading this thread!] http://www.yuuguu.com/
Cross platform and capable of controlling screens on either end or the apps contained thereon. What possibilities will that beget I wonder...

I just found it the other day and have yet to try it, but it sure reads awesome.

Apple’s Aperture v Adobe’s Lightroom

I’m comparing the two photo management applications side by side, trial-by-trial version. Sometimes I’m running the two beasts concurrently, to get a real time, visual comparison and that puts my MacBook Pro under strain. My compact digital camera is a Sony DSC-T9. First impression, Lightroom seems to have borrowed from Aperture the dark black & grey background and logical set box commands. In Aperture. I found the user interface, to be a steeper learning curve than Lightroom, maybe because I’m used to Photoshop CS2 and found many commands familiar. I like Aperture’s organizational tools: The project and subfolder structure, the smart albums, the common keyboard commands, vaults and the overall layout.

With Adobe the editing and output capabilities really overpower the Aperture toolset. Editing is faster, more intuitive and overall I occasionally I'm able to just provide more creative and successful results with the tools in Lightroom. Speed oh yes speed, this is where Aperture gets stuck, mind you importing speed is on par with Lightroom but in the image editing process (not to mention getting around the vast array of commands) Adobe offering is noticeably faster. In essence: UI and organizational features for Aperture, speed and editing power for Lightroom.

Both are two great pieces of software and I think in the end whatever application one end up using depends a lot more with how you are used to working on your images and what software you have used in the past. At the moment Lightroom has a slight edge over Aperture but that may change as I get more and more familiar with both applications. Obviously Photoshops CS3 would be my favourite choice but as I’d only want the application for home-office use, I don’t really need all that array of sophisticated features. Another thing to consider is that Adobe Lightroom is on special offer until 30th of April, retailing over AUS$100 less than Aperture, and as from May it’ll be slightly more expensive.

Good news for Apple; market research company Gartner has revealed figures that show an impressive 30% increase in market share since the first quarter of 2006. This compares favourably with the -15.5% of Dell and +25.8% of HP, despite the release of Vista, which may well have caused a spike in sales for PC vendors.

Here's the full article. Note that they're still referred as Apple Computer and not as Apple Inc. as Stevie would have liked.

Let's hope that these stats bring some sense of reality to the Cupertino boys, reminding them that computers and OS X has made what Apple is now. Tech toys are fine (iPod, iTV, iPhone) but the bread & butter of their business is still computers. Giz Leopard OS X now!

No need for separate software - since the iPhone handles all of it's synching via iTunes, a new version of iTunes will be released a few days prior to the iPhone's release, or coinciding with it's release - the iPhone is essentially an iPod on steroids, and what you describes is essentially what iPod synching already does...

Daffy, you're comparing apples and oranges, what you get with iTunes is different to what you get with a dedicated phone suite, such as Nokia's.

My idea was a convergence of the two (iTunes media sync and PC suite business facilities; push emails, files exchange, business software etc...) into one. In the end, iPhone to be truly successful in reinventing the category (and attract business/corporate users) has to combine best of both world.

The Dark Empire Strikes Back!

Hacker Cracks a Mac

.....oh wait a minute, could this be a slanted story? After all Micro$oft is one of the major advertiser at the publication and we all know companies like to pump adv. money into friendly or at least no hostile media. It seems that this increasing journalist practice of sensationalism to get attention by PC WORLD magazine has been questioned by their own readers.

This is what no armchair analyst seems to understand - to reinvent a category, the very first you do, is NOT to try to be and do the same thing everyone else is. You *start* by doing one, essential, thing very, very well.

In the case of the iPod, that was playing digital music.

In the case of the iPhone, that is, being what Steve Jobs introduced it as - a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod, and an internet communication device.

It will start out as a phone that does what it does very well, and I have no doubt additional features will be added as it matures, as the product matures.

Pushing it out the gate with a plethora of features, would be a recipe for disaster, and for a flopped product, as in the case of most competitors.
