Well I'm detecting iEnvy big time here. While not purporting to know a lot about cellphones I think the major difference is that this is an Apple product and all of yours are not.
Apple already produces computers and music players second to none that are worth the additional cost in spades.
Too much hype? Yes, but that's the media's fault and has little effect on people's desire to buy the iphone.
Plus the numbers have been crunched, Apple will make about a 55% profit off of each iphone sold and they're selling like crazy, so I disagree about the crash and burn. Of course the only downside is At&T is not as proficient at their business as Apple is at their own.
BTW the result of this has sent their stock to $127.17, which makes me happy. Yes I have an iAgenda here. Good thing Gore lost it's paying off.

Which is why I say Jobs is brillant at marketing. He has everybody stirred up in a frenzy over a product that has already exists.
In NYC buying an iPhone is cheaper than getting laid? So it does suck over there, that is why I am here.

I believe that that comment would be disputed in many quarters, for example the HP Media Center with either the standard Altec or the optional Bose speakers would outclass anything Apple has.
In any event, the iPhone proves that PT Barnum was right.

patin bangkok - Apple's tend to cost more than building your own PC. When you get down to it all computers perform the same functions but Macs are remarkably better at them.
CS-ok true but I think we all know I was talking about portable music players. I'd be interested in hearing of one better than an ipod, please don't say Zune.
And I think Bill Gates deserves to be likened to PT Barnum well ahead of Jobs the way he's influenced everyone to use his half baked operating systems over the years.
But I have to admit I'd feel like a sucker if I shelled out for an iphone only to not be able to activate it. At&T is the wolf in sheep's clothing leaping out of your iphone to inconvenience you.

I would not buy an iPhone now, but wait for the 2nd or 3rd generation of which it will have more storage, 3G, SIM card and improved software.
But it is most of the other electronic manufacturers that are the suckers. Steve Jobs keeps on beating everyone because "It is the INTERFACE Stupid" Most Phone OS sucks and Apple will raise the bar yet again and others will get their ass into gear. On many phones it is near rocket science to perform simple functions. Remember the mass market cannot set the time on their VCR/DVD recorders. Job is the master of KISS and also then Kiss my Ass to the others in the market.
Yeah the N95 may do a lot more, but Nokia should also be providing free T-shirts with "NERD" in big letters for the style of it to their buyers. "Yeah I got a thing in my pocket too" and it not a NERD N95 phone!
The iPhone will sell because of cool styling and ease of use. The small population of techies will go elsewhere, but the volume is in the masses.

I see we have separate agendas then CS, best of luck. Thaid Up you hit the nial on the head - ease of use will draw the masses. And for the money these gadgets cost, they had better be easy to use.
It's like buying a Toyota and drving all over with no worries or feeling like you're the man because you got the Ford fixed up enough to go to the auto parts store to buy that part you need for that other problem.

I'm sorry, the only classification for those like yourself with that old argument is, quite simply, "Idiot".
You and others of your persuasion simply don't 'get it' (Nothing wrong with that, it makes for good entertainment) - essentially, it's not about how many features you can squeeze into a given product, it's how usable you make the product.
In shorter form - It's not about the 'what', it's about the 'how'.
Apple products excel in two ways :
- They are extremely good at the tasks they set out to do, by keeping the objectives exceedingly simple.
- They are, generally, extremely well-built, with an exceptional attention to detail.
The 'equivalent' PC-folk based products are simply built on two contrasting objectives:
- Cram as much as you can into a box, and do it cheaply.
- Make it barely 'good enough'.
Nowadays, the old argument of "Apple products are more expensive" does not exist anymore either. Apple computers, iPods, or even the iPhone cost the same than their vastly inferior competitor brands.
iPhone expensive at $600? Compare it to the Treo 700 ($499), or the Nokia N95 ($700-$800) - and those only come with 1gb of RAM, and can only be expanded to a maximum of 2GB, if you're willing to pay a premium for the 2GB cards.
iPods expensive, with ranges from $79 to $249?
In the end, what it comes down to is a massive case of iEnvy from the peanut gallery, along with a healthy serving of ego defense ("I spent a bunch on my smartphone, so I must justify the expense, even my argument makes me sound like a goober")
..and, once the iPhone shows up at MBK, the same folks arguing so fervently about how inferior it is, will be using one within a year, and singing its praises, and pretending they never said anything negative.
