Dr. Eric Shmidt, CEO of Google from Moscone Center stage:

Quote: "You can actually merge without merging. Each company should do the absolutely best thing they can do every time, and he's [Steve Jobs] shown it today."

"We can take the enormous brain trust of the Apple team and the open protocols of companies like google and put them in an environment for end users. From a gooogle perspective we've pushed very hard to partner with Apple and working with many many different data service,"

And therein lies the crux of the matter: Open Protocols. Apple embraces them; Micro$oft thwarts them.

Open Protocols. Apple embraces them

That's sure arguable.

But let me try to take the temptation away by asking, what does this have to do with Thailand?

2. iPhone - it will be interesting to see how Apple would differentiate itself from the mass of smartphones, PDAs that currently saturate the market.

This is not likely to be released, or even announced at Macworld 2007 -- for the simple reason that Steve Jobs would not be interested in diminishing the impact of the other announcements, or to not give the iPhone the maximum exposure. If we were to assume that the iPhone brand constitutes a new micro-brand of Apple's, it stands to reason that it would receive it's own special 'Apple Event' - just as the original and subsequent iPods have been announced at Special Events.

well it seems that iPhone was indeed announced, as widely predicted. You got that bit horribly wrong.

I haven't seen or found anything about Leopard yet, which was my No.1 wish. What has been said at the expo? When is the likely release date and what extra features? There are rumours that Apple is going to improve Boot Camp and make it similar to Parallels, is that a possibility? Why not then going all the way like VMware, which is able to support virtual applications; pre-packaged virtual machines that come with applications and user settings already installed and configured. Using it, one could, for example, download an appliance that would let you put a ready-to-run Oracle software installation on the Mac. What might have once taken two days of configuration hassles will become a small matter of dragging and dropping files. It has full support for physical devices attached to your MacBook Pro, and use USB devices like video cameras, iPods, printers, and disks at full speed. Even devices that do not have drivers for OS X will work in a virtual machine.

Why not then going all the way...

Heck, it's only been a year since the switch to Intel processors made all this virtualization and dual booting goodness possible. If you ask me, I think the free market has done quite well rising to the opportunity. After all, Boot Camp was begat as a result of an open source hacking challenge.

Competition in the open marketplace is what moves technologies along. And here's yet one more option:
2007.01.09 - CodeWeavers Unveils CrossOver® 6.0, Enabling Mac and Linux Users To Run Windows Applications Natively.

I'm anticipating Leopard as much as you, Sarge. 'Twas quite disappointed he didn't mention it.

one piece of good news here, something worth waiting for: MS Office for Mac 2008. With the universal version of the business office suite I can do away with MS OS (Vista) altogether. Good, one less expense and lesser risk of having my computer infested.

Stevie-boy, when are you going to release Leopard? Be good, tell us....

Arrgh, can't stop readng thread.

Itunes 7 broke my internet radio. They changed the server protocol with that release. The protocols around ipods and itunes, the current crown jewels, sure seem proprietary to me. Like the iTunes library format looks a lot like XML, until you try to use standard XML tools on it.

I still think of things like Appletalk when I think of open systems from Apple. Then, you needed to buy a third party gateway box to talk to the internet. Maybe it's all different now and the past will never repeat.

But writing this I realize that I *would* rather worry about my toe nails.
