My hard disk crashed the other day, no back-ups. :- ( Couldn't leave it there to get repaired as there was a whole load of sensitive materials there. So, just put in a new hard disk, and got it going... yeah, yeah, back-up, back-up, back-up!

I can believe this story about the guy who wanted to buy a Mac and got f***ed over and went to jail over the other 12,500b, or should we say the original 188k ?
we've only just read about how agressive a Thai can get over 100b in a bar in Pattaya
so imagine how much more aggressive they can be over amounts exponentially greater
I repeat here as I have said other places, do not get between a Thai and their money, no matter how ill-gotten their gain, they are certain it's owed to them
I'd also love to know the outcome of that guy's case, if he's cleared in court or penalized

The way to deal with it would simply have been to either:
- refuse shipment, and dispute the charges, and never go shopping there again.
- have the salesman explain the mistake - mistakes do happen - but expect some kind of bonus, gift, special thrown into the purchase to make up for the inconvenience.
- buy mail-order, or have someone from the US bring it with them.
Either way, the behavior was highly unprofessional from both sides.

If the drive spins up, at all, use Data Rescue II. It's a life saver. Worth what it costs, and the download demo shows you what you can recover, and upon payment, will let you recover it.

in addition to Daffy's sterling advice, I cannot stress hard enough the need to store all your stuff on a external HDD. They are relatively cheap to buy and with back up software one can routinely and automatically set back ups in the background. Once the 1st back up is completed, future back ups are incremental, meaning only new or changed files will be backed up. Hardware can be replaced (at a cost) your valued files are irreplaceable.
Never forget this mantra: back up, store up or get f***ed up

jingjo, Migo is a PC back up software for portable storage devices. BK owns a Mac, totally different animal.

I know you've gotten some other hints but I will add my 2 cents worth too.
If you can hang this as a 2nd drive on a machine, go to the torrent sites and grab OnTrack "Easy Recover Pro" it is a great util for doing sector-level HDD scans and recovering data. I have used this quite successfully over the years.
Another trick if that does not work is to take your drive, wrap it up in a cloth and then put it in the freezer overnight. Take it out, let it get close to room temp and then try to fire it up again... depending on the error condition, you have a 60% chance of getting it running just long enough to back up your data.
