"take your drive, wrap it up in a cloth and then put it in the freezer overnight. Take it out, let it get close to room temp and then try to fire it up again..." Man I love those low-tech homespun remedies. Thanks for sharing!

Nice if you have a PC/Windows machine, but BK has a Mac, which should seem pretty obvious from the subject and name of this thread. Data Rescue II is the only, pretty much, solution that works, as previously stated: http://prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue_info.php Love the freezer solution, though -- it has worked in saving my clients' data a great many times, and it certainly exemplifies the whole 'voodoo' concept of technical solutions

Actually, this trick has been around for a long long time.... I've done this 5 times have tried it and my success rate stands at: 2 able to get back and copy everything; 1 could get back only a limited amount of data; and 2 nada! In a pinch...do what you can do!

DD: 2 things on your point.....granted, I have not been on a Mac for years but I thought a lot of the current hype is how much easier it is to run (gasp) Windwoes apps on the newer Macs. If this is the case...who cares then! Use the app that works.... if it is DRII, fine. If ERP is better, fine! One thing I am certain of is that DRII is not the only solution. People just have to be willing to think about alternatives. Besides, I am sure there are plenty of guys with a windows machine that would be willing to hang it and try to help the good GK out. I would certainly give it a go if still needed.

In order to recover filesystem based data, a data recovery program needs to be familiar with the FILESYSTEM of the source machine - i.e. the Mac's HFS file system is radically different, from a recovery perspective, to Windows' FAT32, NTFS file system. The ability to run Windows apps on the Mac does NOT apply to low-level applications, dealing with low level data recovery, across the platforms. Thus, ERP will certainly work well to recover Windows data, or an attached Windows hard drive, but it will NOT recover Mac data. It would be like expecting a translation program that only does French/English translation, to also to Farsi/Korean translation, if you know what I mean. Yes, there are two or three other programs out there for Mac data recovery (namely, one by Drive Savers is another good one), but overall, DRII is the best option.

ah..so that is why Macs suck. I get it (no flames pls...just kidding) That makes sense and since I have not worked on a mac in 10 years, I cannot argue the point. It does however seem odd you cannot take a sector level approach to the recovery... It's just a bunch of freaking data sitting on a disk sector.... oh well, enough of this for me. I have to go back up my drive to an external before karma kicks me in the ass.

Safari 3.0 (beta) - now also in Windows flavor (this is going to be BIG, boys, as this is one of Apple's little trojan horses). Kick-ass new features in Leopard unveiled at WWDC today, by Mr. Jobs. Hello, tomorrow. http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/

good to see this thread popping back again.... I pre-ordered Leopard and plan to upgrade as soon it hits my door mat. One of the features I'm keen on is Time Machine and to that end I purchased this morning an extra LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Drive 500GB. I'll nominate that as my back up drive. Life is good under Mac OSX p.s. Q. 4skippy: wanna give Ubuntu a whirl, is it advisable to triple boot (partition) under boot camp? I already have Windows Vista Business Edition and was wondering if I can partition my HD further to install Linux using boot camp facility (or even Parallels, which is currently feeding from my boot camp drive to run Windows Vista).

Here's an ideal starter option for those just making the 'switch': Leopard, Parallels, Windows XP bundle Comes out to about a $100 dollar worth of savings. While Boot Camp will be bundled in Leopard, I'm thinking a triple boot might be too tricky to setup and less functional in the long run. Why? With Parallels 3 you have the ability to drag files between the OS X desktop and your virtual machine and you haven't slice and diced your HDD.
