got my retail copy of Leopard this morning in the mail box, well done Apple Aus. I've already installed the software and here a few impression: 1. Installation lasted about 2 hrs - no clean install option available, just upgraded the OS 2. Everything worked smoothly, all my files and preferences, internet fav, emails, folders, photos etc... were at the right place. Even my background theme started immediately. Impressive stuff from Apple. 3. One minor glitch so far (got so much to explore and tweak yet) was Mail program. HTTP support (I had previously installed a 3rd party software to retrieve hotmail emails from within Mail) doesn't work in Leopard yet. 4. Time Machine the marquee feature of the new OSX, takes away the pain and boredom of backing your system. I nominated my new LaCie HDD as back up destination and Leopard took over from there. Great stuff, simple elegant and above all it works! It remains to be seen if TM works with LaCie when connected to my AirPort Extreme Base Station. I haven't tried that yet, still making the initial back up via firewire. 5. Finder, completely re-worked it models after iTunes source list,s better organized and more usable than previous OSX. Much needed improvement. Overall, I'm impressed with the easiness of upgrade in comparison with Windows OS. Lots and lots of new features, some eye candy like Quick Look and Spaces. Great upgrade with iChat, it's a pity that all my contacts are in MSN and Yahoo and those 2 email clients aren't supported in iChat. I feel I had taken the right decision to ditch PCs, back in February and this Leopard upgrade just strengthened that feeling further. Get a Mac, Get a Leopard there's nothing better in the market.

"...It remains to be seen if TM works with LaCie when connected to my AirPort Extreme Base Station. I haven't tried that yet, still making the initial back up via firewire." There has been a lot of talk on the forums is that TM does NOT work with a HD connected through Airport and a good deal of disgust over the problem. One guy posted the following suggested work around somewhere, but it sounds too complicated for me. 1) disconnect airport disk and plug into computer as a USB drive directly. 2) Set up time machine to use this volume. 3) In terminal cd to volume "cd /Volume/HDD" 4) In terminal "touch.com.apple.timemachine.supported" this will create an invisible file. 5) In terminal "sudo chown root:admin.com.apple.timemachine.supported" 6) In terminal "sudo chmod 1775.com.apple.timemachine.supported" 7) In terminal "ls -l -a" the.com.apple.timemachine.supported file should be -rwxrwxr-t 8) eject disk, unplug from mac, plug into Airport. 9) mount at mac using connect to server in finder (command k) and afp://airportname.local./HDname 10) see if time machine now sees the drive and tries to use it.

DO NOT attempt any of these listed work-arounds. There is a good reason why Apple has temporarily disabled Time Machine usage of an airport shared USB drive -- it's unreliable until they update the airport firmware. In fact, it could claim a write took place, when it did not, due to the way the airport handles shared drives. That's fine for miscellaneous storage (the drive just tries to write again), but not in the case of Time Machine, where valuable information would get lost. Thus, unlike Microsoft, Apple has disabled that functionality until they get it to work reliably. Microsoft would have just shipped it that way, waited for things to break, denied they were broken, and then shipped a fix 5 service packs later, silently. I like Apple's way better - whenever something does not work, there is invariably a good reason. As for Sarge's HTTP mail plugin - it's been updated.

So, since Sarge has been spotted to have resurfaced -- how's your Mac adventures going, and have you updated your MacBook to 10.5.2 yet (just released yesterday, with plenty of good fixes) ?

Quote: from Sarge on 6:09 am on Feb. 6, 2007 I wonder if MS Office for Mac 2008, a universal binary product, will offer support for Microsoft Exchange
In answer to that question, since MS Office 2008 *finally* ships - it supports Exchange no better than Office 2004 did, which means, it does so with the least amount of effort, and meeting the minimum need of e-mail and calendaring and contacts. All the same problems inherent in 2004 are present in 2008 -- oh, and a bunch of bugs and security issues. Well done, Microsoft Mac Business Unit.

New MacBook Pro as early as tomorrow - or maybe not. Who knows. It's Tuesday, though, so we know something new is to be announced.

a new iteration of MBP is on the line mirroring new enclosures of the slim, curvaceous form of the new MBA, with Montevina (aka Centrino 2) cpu. It's a major step forward and will offer a worthwhile boost in performance while reducing energy consumption. So the new machines will be well able to do the heavy lifting associated with video editing and other large file manipulation. They'll run cooler and have a far better battery life. I'm currently very happy with my Mac and will only consider to upgrade when the new generation of MBP will come to light. I'm in the market for Time Capsule 1TB which I found cheaper in Thailand than anywhere else. Apple is working on Mac OS X 10.5.3 seed to the developing community to test against bugs, so we should expect the final version soon.
