I don't have plans to be there, but my avatar will be...

I'm not willing to pay $2,600 for tickets to a keynote.

Here's a beaut' for the kind of ship Herr Ballmer is steering...

The relevant portion:

"In an unusual claim, however, Microsoft also suggests the app supports Macs but only through Boot Camp, with Windows still necessary for the software. The Redmond, Washington-based company also elevates specs and suggests the Apple computers require a 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo as well as a higher resolution (1440x900 versus 1024x768) display. The company additionally is confused regarding specifications and claims WorldWide Telescope is supported by Mac OS X 10.2 systems despite the old platform's lack of support for Intel-based Macs and Boot C it also claims a requirement for an HFS+ file system, which is unsupported by Windows."

Microsoft - the "It's Good Enough" company...

.... but on the other hand they could more clever than we make 'em out to be. Someone said they're trying to muddle waters, create confusion about Mac support for Windows platform and spec required to run Vista on Macs.

Oh wait.... that reminds of that little funny interview of Steve Ballmer laughing at the iPhone. Maybe they really are the management of the not quite right.

You have to ask?

yeah, I wonder about that - and why no one in the media ever did a follow-up to Ballmer's long statement about what a failure the iPhone will be... Would be interesting to hear how he would spill that by now, considering the iPhone has reduced Windows Mobile to a far second, by now...

I recently came accross a quote from Ted Nelson, the visionary who created the words hypertext (in 63) and... dildonics (in 75). It was not meant about Apple, but it expresses well where Apple's achievements have their root:

I am a design chauvinist. I believe that good design is magical and not to be lightly tinkered with. The difference between a great design and a lousy one is in the meshing of the thousand details that either fit or don't, and the spirit of the passionate intellect that has tied them together, or tried. That's why programming---or buying software---on the basis of "lists of features" is a doomed and misguided effort. The features can be thrown together, as in a garbage can, or carefully laid together and interwoven in elegant unification...

doubt it that Steve Ballmer would even begin to understand the meaning of the above quote. In a previous life he must have been a 2nd hand car salesman from hell. He's vulgarity personified.

Back to business; MBU have announced that has released Service Pack 1 for Office 2008. Timely announcement on the conversation we had here a couple days ago. They're claiming that Office 2008 is the best selling (and faster) edition so far. The update is said to improve on printing accuracy and reliability in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. It should also deliver improved compatibility with files exchanged between Excel 2008 for Mac and Excel 2003 and Excel 2007 for Windows. Entourage is to gain improved calendar views and Exchange support. The personal information manager and email client will also have the ability to send and view image from third-party tools.

Most importantly MBU intends to bring VBA-language support back to the next version of Office for Mac, without giving a firm timetable. We'll see.

It promptly corrupted and broke several of the E'rage databases of clients of mine that we updated. I note they promised 'improved stability and reliability of Entourage database.'

Uh huh...!

these days social network is a buzz word bandied around to describe any kind of community/forum where people (cyber) gather together to common interest / hobby.

Of course the Mac community have their own SNs too; one of them is NET4MAC, the service is well designed, full featured, and highly customisable. The service requires that you have OSX 10.4 or 10.5, and to use it, you have to download a desktop client that you can use to sign up for an account and manage your profile and friends.

The Net4Mac application runs locally, it integrates neatly with your iCal calendar, the Apple Address Book, and more. You can even use the Net4Mac application to invite friends in your address book to join the service.

"DOWNLOAD NOW THE APPLICATION DESIGNED FOR MAC OS X"

I guess these are grammar challenged people - from the looks of it, and checking their other sites, they seem more fly-by-night than anything else. I would not trust my personal information to some questionable application. I would not suggest signing up.

Well, now we know how Herr Ballmer intends to spin this, and what his response would be - yep, that's all it takes. Just SAY what your marketshare will be, and magically it becomes that. :

-----------------------------
http://www.macnn.com/articles/08/05/13/microsoft.smartphone.share/

Microsoft sees 40% smartphone share by 2012

As Apple prepares its iPhone 2.0 platform, Microsoft is reportedly anticipating control of 40-percent of the smartphone market by 2012, according to a representative within the company. PC World writes that the endeavor will be trying, considering the company currently sits at 13-percent share, with Symbian taking first place at 67-percent, and BlackBerry devices at 10-percent. The upcoming, highly-anticipated Google Android OS is also a large unknown factor against the claim.

Microsoft's primary strengths draw from companies such as HTC – currently the world's largest manufacturer of Windows Mobile-based devices – and its touch screen phones, such as the new HTC Touch Diamond.

Overall, Microsoft expects to almost double its sales, from 11 million handsets during fiscal 2007, to almost 20 million in 2008.
-----------------------------

What's funny about their fuzzy numbers, is that it's physically nearly impossible for them to get that number, due to the 60% dominance of Nokia (which won't change much) and Blackberry at another 10%. Any losses to those two will move to the iPhone, and the Windows Mobile market will see further cannibalization from the iPhone as well.

I mean, MS can claim *shipped* 10 million, and wants to *ship* 20 million next year, with 8 million and 18 million sitting on shelves... Other look at *sold* numbers.

MS has funny math - same way they are counting each XP sale as a Vista sale.
