Yahoo / MS deal's not over.

While initially surprised that Ballmer just packed up and left when the deal would not happen, I did not think he would just give up - and he didn't:

He's just having Icahn do his dirty work, and since Icahn is only motivated by money, he's going to fast forward the debacle. Nicely played, but this may still end up backfiring big time on all involved.

To be honest, I was NOT surprised Ballmer walked. I was more surprised Yahoo's shares didn't drop further on the news. I thought it would fall to the low 20's.

Microsoft's offer for Yahoo was a financial bear hug. There was not a single other company that came close to matching or beating Microsoft's offer. Yet Yahoo was irrationally defiant, demanding $37-$40 share, exactly double the share price Yahoo was trading at when Microsoft originally made its offer.

Why on Earth would Ballmer engage in a bidding war with himself? Just to be flexible and easy, it makes perfect sense that he would offer $1-$2/share more than the original offer, but anything more would be foolish.

Ballmer knew that if he walked, Yahoo shareholders would likely put enormous pressure on Yahoo, perhaps even revolt. That threat alone should have made Jerry Yang pull the trigger. Yang made a huge, defiant, stubborn error.

By walking, Ballmer can watch Yahoo implode from shareholder pressure, and reemerge in 6 months with an offer of $28-$29/share. Ballmer is shrewd and mean, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him make Yahoo sell itself for less than the original Microsoft offer in January.

Even with Icahn in the picture now, I think Ballmer will do to Yahoo exactly what Oracle did to BEA systems (again with Icahn involvement). That is, walk away and buy later for cheaper. Icahn owns his shares around $25, so even if Microsoft buys Yahoo in six months for $28-$30/share, Icahn still makes over 10% on his $1.5 billion dollar stake. Not bad. By the way, I think Ballmer could steal Yahoo for cheaper without Icahn's involvement. Ballmer doesn't need Icahn in the slightest.

And I fully admit, I could be totally wrong. The equities market has been anything but reasonable in the past 9 months.

Oh, I agree - Ballmer does not need Icahn, specifically -- he just needs a useful idiot, and Icahn plays that part well enough.

When to make the leap? This is the question I ask myself every week now.

I've been ready to trade in my PB G4 for a MacBook Pro for months! but I decided I'm holding off until they put BlueRay's inside. So I wait. But the last couple of days I've shopped HP PC laptops and noticed they've got HDMI out plugs. "Hmm.. I thought to myself, maybe I'll wait until the Mac Pro's get both." So I wait.

Well, just last night, I read that Apple cut a deal in Taiwan for some state-of-the-art displays for an upcoming major revision in the MacBook line. Maybe I'll wait some more....

f***! I'm so tired of waiting! I just wanna jump in and immerse myself in all that MacBook Pro goodness. But when?!?!

As you have experienced, if you continue to wait 'for the next big thing', all you will do is continue to wait. By your reasoning, once the MacBook Pros will include Blu-ray, and/or HDMI, then there'll be something else on the horizon - and you'll wait some more.

For what it's worth - the incorporation of Blu-ray only matters once you have a Blu-SuperDrive, able to read Blu-ray, and burn the remaining formats -- which is not available in 9.5mm format, and if it were, would be ridiculously expensive -- finally, to what end? Mac can currently not play Blu-ray discs, because the AAC+ licensing organization in LA won't license Apple the playback right (for political reasons, and Apple won't play ball).

Regarding HDMI, you may consider that each MacBook Pro already includes the ability to output HDMI, as that is not much more than a compact DVI port -- and there are plenty of adapter cables to provide that output...

So, why are you waiting?

isn't this the dilemma of all us? Buy now or wait for the newer model. Can't answer that, however I'd say that as you have an old model, you may want to skip this generation of MBPs and wait a few more months for the new one as they'll be a significantly improved, in terms of design & hardware upgrade.

My personal computers have a 2 years life cycle and having bought this MBP (for the 1st time) last February, I'll wait another 9 months or so before changing it. Or maybe earlier, to give myself a lovely xmas pressie.

A thing about MAIL -
I have auto hide activated my dock and I usually hover my mouse at the bottom of the screen to make the dock pop up so I can check if Mail icon has any unread messages listed. I've recently came across this lil helpful plug-in, mail unread menu 3. It’s a small notifying app that interfaces with Mail and rests in the menu bar.

That's what I'm thinking. What's hard is Apple is so good at quashing rumors it's impossible to plan ahead. About all you can do is leap when the next-gen announcement comes.

Honestly? Mostly because I'm in Korea and I'm really not interested in being shipped the dual language [Hangul in this case] keyboard which is all they sell through the Apple Store here.

Then again, if you Google Blu-ray 9.5mm you'll see it's just a matter of time before the slot loading 9.5mm Blu-ray ships. Perhaps holding off until I return to the States, in August isn't such a bad idea after all.

Be prepared to pay a $500 premium for the privilege of not being able to view movies, and pay $20 a blank media.

MS is at it again - now wants parts of Yahoo... the good parts.

What Icahn would have done (sell Yahoo off in parts), Ballmer is now proposing (buy parts of Yahoo).
