by making all mobile numbers 08, they have now freed up (again) all the other 01, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09
... except of the 08.

My understanding is that "ALL" telephone numbers in Thailand ( whether they are mobile phones OR land-line phones ) will have to switch to the 10 digit system.
Thare's where your confusion lies.

ALL mobile phone numbers begin with 08, no exceptions. So, 082-xxx-xxxx is a mobile phone number.

02-xxx-xxxx will be a land line.

I am sure in future, ALL phone numbers will be 10-digit, but certainly not right now.

BK,

Thanks for clearing up my confusion.

BUT - now we go from problems in mathematics to technology problems ---------

Would it not cause problems in the switching systems if one set of numbers ( i.e. land-lines ) are 9 digits while another set of numbers ( i.e. mobile phones ) are 10 digits ?

I am sure there were significant amounts of upgrades required on the existing systems to accommodate this change. And they seemed to have worked out this problem.

Anyway, they will probably modify the prefixes in future to accommodate more phone numbers.

BK,

You are right - because I just remembered that in other countries ( India & China for example ) the land-lines and mobile phones DO NOT have the same number of digits.

I guess I am sceptical because of what was done about 4 or 5 years ago :-
Before that time when dialling from within a particular area one did not have to pre-fix a "0". Example :- when dialling in Bangkok to a Bangkok number one just pre-fixed with a "2" OR when dialling in ChiangMai to a ChiangMai number one just pre-fixed with a "53".
However 4 or 5 years ago the system was changed to include a "0" in the pre-fix prior to the area code - example :- "02" when dialling in Bangkok to a Bangkok number OR "053" when dialling in ChiangMai to a ChiangMai number.
The reason for this change was given as " this would result in a huge increase in the available numbers".
I don't think that we saw this increase !!

Mind you, they are claiming the '8' changes will allow them to accomodate the next 30 years of numbers grows. I call 'bullshit'.

Most likely in 5-7 years, they claim to run out again, because of 'unexpected growth'.

That being said, I used my visit last week to get my SIM converted (took 5 minutes), so at least IT will last for the next 30 years

Only difference I noted was that some people that had me in their addressbook, no longer listed me by name, even though my number still showed up the normal way in their caller ID (i.e. it was listed without the '8')

I popped into the AIS office at Sukhumvit Soi 25 yesterday and gave them my 1-2-call SIM card. They "updated" it for the extra digit. Took about 30 seconds.

I spoke to the supervisor there and she said that the updating does two (and only two) things:

1. Finds all mobile numbers in your address book and adds the 8 into the number.

2. Changes the Service Centre number for SMS by adding the extra 8.

So you can easily do this yourself but it is very convenient to have AIS or a shop do it if you have many mobile numbers stored in your address book.

That AIS office will also store your address book in their system so that if you lose your SIM card, you can have them restore the address book onto a replacement. You can also ask them for a print out of your address book, and if you ask the right person, they can also email you a text file containing your address book.
