Hey, Mel, wanna lecture us on the downside?
Fun set of events on the way to BKK - sold my first iPhone of the trip to a very excited and enthusiastic gentleman from Chiang Mai. Took care of the unlock and setup for him right in the arrival hall (well, actually, upstairs, in the lobby with the various eateries). 20 minutes later, his AIS SIM was humming happily along in an upgraded and unlocked iPhone.
It was kinda fun, but it certainly demonstrates what Tim Cook considered 'a demonstration of the device's popularity' in markets that Apple is currently not active.
Seems iPhones have generally dropped a bit in price, with the ease of the current ziPhone unlocker (yay, Zibri!), but still hover around 22,000 Baht (26,000 for a 16GB version). Still seem to be selling really well at MBK.
It's nice to be back

Anyways, just read some articles about 3G discussions and what the hopes are of 3G coming to Thailand. As always, the progressive and forward thinking Telecommunications Committee is at the core of any delays, it seems.
The debates range over 3G, or WiMAX (termed 4G, incorrectly).
My bet is that 3G (i.e. GSM) will prevail. While more expensive to operate in the long run, it is easier to implement right away for GSM carriers, and allows a smooth transition to LTE (GSM's EVDO implementation).
Pair that with both Hutch and CAT having announced to abandon CDMA in favor of GSM/LTE, it seems obvious that GSM should be the victor - that is, unless Shinawatra has an investment in WiMax
