I doubt very much that AAPL will split in the foreseeable future, as they have absolutely no reason to split the stock, and every reason to make it grow as high as it can.

This is speculation on my part - but I believe the aim to be $320, simply because once that happens, Apple will exceed Microsoft's marketcap

A stock split and the shares at $160 would accomplish the same thing. No need to keep it at the high price. A stock split would only help the stock as it would appeal to a larger investor base.

ok with share price on the rise the stock won't split. When trading (buying) volume slows, that's when you'll get a split, if ever. We're nowhere close to that happening.

What I want to know is when will apple declare a dividend?

their conclusion was that because of splitting, value per share decreases
Have you considered that Apple may not be interested in decreasing the value per share, and thus the perceived value of AAPL? Stocks are a game of perception (usually, the wrong perception) and emotion. As is being pointed out, the reason to split is to encourage purchasing of stock, if trading volume decrease - AAPL does not seem to have the problem, being a heavily traded stock right now.

Can you imagine how many people would like to invest with Warren Buffet if they split their shares to make these remotely affordable for common people? Buffet fund stock is valued at > $ 113,000 per single share.
Yeah, so why is Buffet not splitting his shares?

Not for a while - Apple is filling their war chest for two reasons:

- to weather the coming economic downturn in the US
- to prepare for more market expansion
- to prepare for something big.

Personally, I'd rather have no dividends, but an AAPL able to weather economic ups and downs, and a strong war chest for an eventual major gambit in 2-3 years, than getting a couple of dollars each year, and subsequently a weaker AAPL.

EDIT: Added link to re-evaluation of AAPL stock, and growing market cap:

That's one of the reasons I like Shawn Wu - he's one of the only, if not THE only analyst, to actually admit he made a mistake, and corrects himself. He's generally also pretty right on target.

Lets see, it took MSFT what, 20 years before they declared a dividend? It seems to me that the tendency of the tech companies is to not declare a dividend but rely on rising market value.

That is why if you follow a 'buy and hold' strategy you need to mix in some 'brick and mortar' stocks in your portfolio to develop some cash flow...

Let's see quick look on Google finance, grab slider all the way to the left, I get 1984, which is more than 20 years.

I have no doubts or disappointments that apple is doing something big and knows what is going on. But a dividend usually strengthens most stocks of intelligent companies.

Obviously, if it's too large it will hurt the company. I think we can rule that out. It boosts investor confidence because it proves cash flow. Also, most investors reinvest dividends and get more shares. If they weren't willing to reinvest, they would probably not want to be invested in said corp anyway.

The news of a dividend would turn heads and have a positive affect on the share price, I think, but of course cannot know.

Everything you list is geared towards encouraging more people to buy more stock -- which it appears Apple currently does not require, as it is generating enough revenue and profit on their own, to generate all the capital they need.

I believe that Apple would present it as "Apple is not in the business of selling stock, but of selling consumer products"

I bought a cell phone this month (Sony Erricson) and spent about 3 hours trying to find a ring tone on the internet to download that actually sounded like an actual telephone ring tone. WTF??
You need a faster Internet connection. The proper thing to do in Thailand is to sit in a public place and listen to each ring tone in your phone a couple of times at full volume.

Dividend policy does not matter (Miller-Modigliani). What may matter are changes in dividend policy, as they are taken as an information signal.

Same goes for stock splits. No fundamentals ever support a split (M-M again). However, they are seen as an insider signal as to the companies´prospects... and as such have information value.
