Quote: from Sarge on 5:35 pm on Jan. 10, 2007 I guess what I really need, after I switched to Mac, is to run Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 on the MacBook Pro natively. I mean the original Windows version (not the Mac version), I can't be arsed to reboot the computer (as in Boot Camp) every time I need work on files. Ideally I’d want to run the suite within OSX (as in Parallels) but without having to install Windows Vista OS, in other words use the software as if it were a standard Apple application. Also work on files created in my PC at work and download them on the Mac via a USB key (as I normally do with my Sony Vaio). I can do away with every MS product but Office (and hotmail), I need to understand which application; Parallels, VMware or CodeWeavers can do the best job.
Personally, I would be curious to know what is it about 'Ultimate' Office 2007 that you absolutely need, which Office 2007 for the Mac would not be able to do? They have seamless document compatibility, and besides that, what else do you need, aside from processing words, charting spredsheets, and making bad presentations? Most of all, I feel Codeweavers is the answer, as it does not require the extra 'Windows' installation and license, but in addition since there's no 'Windows' running, you also won't have any issues with virus, spyware,etc... Just your application running, and looking like a Mac app.
Quote: from Skip on 1:19 am on Jan. 11, 2007 However, some speculate Parallels is ever more appealing since introducing its' Coherence mode.
Codeweavers costs $59, Parallels costs $89 + you need a Windows installation for another $200. You also end up with a full Windows environment, and will need to run the usual protection and p[recautions from virus etc.... With Codeweavers, there's only the app you run. Done. For one-trick ponies, Codeweavers is best - like at one client that only needs to run Outlook (because his IT department only supports Exchange, with weekly crashes), Codeweavers will work well.

I think it was at some point when AAPL stock was hovering around $65 or so that I suggested people invest in AAPL, and it was met with some derision. Well, the stock just hit $97. Good thing I listened to my own advice. ---- iPhone platform pushes AAPL targets higher In the wake of Apple's iPhone announcement, analysts are continuing to raise their price targets on Apple stock and predict that the iPhone, which will spearhead revenue growth, is only the beginning of new innovative products from the Cupertino-based company. Research firm UBS raised its targets from $108 to $118, citing robust revenue growth in 2008, while Merrill Lynch -- which raised its target to $113 from $102 -- told clients that the higher-than-expected target price would also increase the company's revenues. With Apple's CEO Steve Jobs predicting sales of 10 million in 2008, UBS analyst Ben Reitzes called the device "revolutionary" and cited the company's introduction of a new computing platform: "We believe the iPhone is revolutionary and can thrive as a convergence platform for years to come. The device is an internet communicator, an iPod & phone in one, featuring a large touchscreen." Touting Apple's innovation, Merrill Lynch also told clients that the phone would herald a new generation of mobile devices. "We’re very impressed with the seamless hardware and software innovation in the iPhone, yet it's still early innings in a new generation of converged mobile devices that tap emerging internet services," Merrill analyst Richard Farmer wrote in his research note to clients. "Features not announced that seem natural in coming generations include GPS, speech & handwriting recognition, and video conferencing." However, the Merrill analyst believes that the lack of tactile keyboard, while allowing greater flexibility, is not optimized for heavy email/blackberry use, which could limit its appeal to corporate customers. Reitzes also said that the device could cannibalize iPod sales up to 40 percent. Citing the company's announced name change to 'Apple, Inc' (from 'Apple Computer, Inc.'), Reitzes said that the company's iPhone is only the beginning of innovative products that are expected this year, including the possibility of other ultra-portable computers. "We believe Apple is not done innovating – and expect the company to release new products throughout the year including new Macs and iPods, additional content partners and possibly even ultra-portable devices that should stimulate revenue re-acceleration throughout the year," Reitzes told clients. With Apple's December/holiday quarter earnings expected to be released next week, Reitzes said that checks indicate strong Mac and iPod demand -- especially for the iPod shuffle, which could indicate that its own previous estimates for iPod sales during the quarter are conservative. Reitzes does not expect the iPhone to change operating margins and expects sales of 850,000 iPhones this year, after it begins shipping in June 2007. UBS raised its fiscal year 2007 EPS estimate to $2.87 (was $2.84) based on 25 percent revenue growth to $24.05 billion (was $23.76 billion) and operating margins of 13.3 percent (unchanged). The company now estimates iPod/iPhone unit sales of 54.6 million (was 54.1 million), including 850,000 iPhone units, reflecting an approximate 40 percent cannibalization rate of iPods.

Daffy Were you there....I saw Steve Whatsisface.....I loved it when he said....'this is no three items....it's only one' (like it wasn't obvious from what we had seen prior to that......) Then the crowd hooped and hollered...whooo hoo....in that annoying way Americans do to express their excitement..... Question: Did you make silly Whooo Hoo noises?...or are you still retaining some Euro-dignity? ps....if it's as good as my iPod....i'll have one.

Daffy, you bring in some good points, which I have taken aboard. In essence I need the MS Office suite because this is the one my company is upgrading in the next month. We do use Access a fair bit so I need that application. I guess what I'm concerned with is to work with the same interface, as file modified in my future MacBook Pro will then be reloaded on my PC at work and shared on the network. I'm going to investigate Codeweavers further, in the hope that I can do away with (any) Windows OS. I'm quite happy to stay within OSX and any application that will let me run MS Office suite at native speed. I will buy the Apple when I'm certain of it. Sarge

Yo mate, you should come down under and really witness rough behaviour verging on extreme uncouthness. Daffy, don't take it to heart, Yurune is only teasing you..... you see here (rather there for the time being) they have a love/hate relationship with USA. There's a lot of resentment towards Americans because they are so rich and powerful, the undisputed top dog; having in effect displaced them as world power long time ago. This feeling is mixed with admiration of US achievements in technology, literature, economy, military powers etc.. On the other hand the other former (still kind of is, to this day) colony, located on the other side of the planet is viewed with warmer feelings albeit mixed with scorn and derision, which only feed their persistent sense of inadequacy and inferiority complex towards the mother country and Europe in general. In short the Brits (and to some extent the Europeans) detest the Americans but respect them, whilst they like the Aussies but patronize them, if that makes sense to you. Sarge

When he walked out, and his second sentence was "We're going to make history today", I knew that I could throw all my predictions out the window, and that what would follow was going to be the iPhone... That day was too cool for words. Yes, I was there. It was an incredible rush - especially seeing the iPhones on the show floor.

No worries - I just quietly gasped.

From my initial impressions - it's better, it's much better! But, bear in mind - it only has 8gb of memory, non-expandable. While it seems obvious that 6G iPods onward will be receiving trickle down design and technology from the iPhone, that'll be a while (though, I suspect, still this year). If you currently have a nano, shuffle, and a mobile phone, then get on the waiting list. If you currently have a 30gb or 80gb iPod, then you may need to wait for that revision, if that's what matters to you (though that won't have a phone). To me, for a multifunction device, it just has the right amount of memory (8gb) as with seamless synching I'll be able to just only carry what I need on it. FYI.

Well, in terms of office Word/Excell apps, those will travel seamlessly between the two platforms with Office 2008 (even with Office 2007) When it comes to Access, since there is nothing similar on the Mac side (we don't have crap databases), you'd need to run that one at least in a vertual environment. I kinda feel sad for your company to use Access, and live under the impression that they are using a database (sorry to sound harsh, but Access is a huge piece of crap on so many levels) - but I guess since that's what you'll have to deal with, no use crying over spilled milk, and you have no control over it.

disregarding moronic posts and keeping things light, here the latest news from down under. Microsoft has just released the latest version of Windows OS (for OZ that is, we know that they are years behind the rest of the world), it's called Windaz Too Thowsand. This operating system has specifically designed for Australians, to make things easy for them. Sarge
