I see that the UK and US have totally run out of iphones implying that the release of iphone 2.0 is imminent. I guess that will mean 3G - great but totally useless for us in LOS.

You're right - what's funny is how the lack of 3G was claimed as a huge deal by the likes of China Sailor, as I recall - and me pointing out the very thing you just pointed out was ignored... Yeah, the whole 3G aspect will be pretty pointless for LOS, at least over the next 42 years, until they figure out the proper regulations...

Fortunately, 3G is only an extremely minor aspect of the new features of the next gen iPhone...

In particular battery life has near halved since I got it in September
I might say that I am getting tired of having to keep repeating my advice of battery maintenance, and people forgetting it / not listening, yet complaining about their battery performance.

You need to regularly re-set or re-condition your iPhone's battery, just as all batteries need to be thus reconditioned (even the ones claiming 'no memory effect'). This involves completely discharging the device, down to it shutting itself off, and then recharging it up for 12 hours. Not 10 hours,. Not 8 hours. Not 14 hours. But 12 hours.

Then, discharging it completely again, and redoing the recharge cycle.

In a bad case, you do this three times in a row, then, once a month.

This will restore your battery to nearly if not completely full, capacity.

Other improvements? GPS (possibly only on a thai map) ? push mail? synch with the calendar? multi sms? different headset fixture?
The activesync compatibility has already been widely touted - and recently, suggestions of dot-Mac integrating iPhone calendar and contacts synch have been circulated - which makes sense, since it is doubtful that Apple would provide synching support for a non-Apple format, without providing the same natively. I suspect that a similar conduit will then be included in a future revision of OS X server as well.

Dot Mac will also support push mail on iPhone (be prepared for reduced battery life, then), as push mail is a configurable option, not a default.

GPS is a likely assumption, as most of the latest 3G chipsets include GPS functionality and receivers as part of their basic make-up.

Multi SMS? Are you kidding about that, considering that the current revision of the OS has been doing multi-receiver SMS since 1.14 revision? In fact, that's what I am doing frequently, and the functionality works very well.

Sarge
talking about sms, it's interesting to note that Apple has recently filed a patent for a universal interface for real-time text chat service. Here the USPTO Filing.

I wonder if it'd be included in future software update and in what form.

wow thats not much of a pain in the arse at all is it?!

so how do you calculate when you think it will be safe to let your phone run down to no battery when you might need it - and then to leave it charging for 12 hours
and do this monthly!!?
and this iphone is supposed to be so great?!?

i have 3 blackberry curves, 8310 and 8320 with built in gps, maps, camera, flash, etc, mms, and I never have any problem with battery, it can go nearly 2 days on heavy use and be fully recharged in an hour

and the new 8330 cdma version does video recording now too

Singapore Telecommunications (aka SingTel) announced that it's secured agreements to distribute the iPhone in Singapore (on SingTel Mobile) and its partly-owned subsidiaries in Australia (on Optus), India (on Bharti Group), and the Philippines (on Globe Telecom). Vodafone's also distributing the iPhone in India and Australia though, so we'll have to wait until later this year to find out who gets to shoot

This applies to all batteries, as I tried to clearly state (but, clearly, not clearly enough).

This applies to users who complain about the battery, or who experience some abnormal battery performance - which can happen to all devices.

Thus, my iPhone battery gives me a fully expected battery performance, if not more so, out of each charge - likewise, I know Blackberry users who have similar battery complaints (and this trick works for them too, albeit most of them recently switched to iPhones).

Guess what operators partly-owned by SingTel are left out of the announcement? Well, for example the ones in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Thailand. But let's see what other announcements will come...

however I also respect that this is the iphone thread so im happy to leave you to it
but id like to point out that I have never had any problems with any nokia phone batterys or blackberry batterys, and I am an extremely heavy user - only switched off when on a plane

but I do put it on charge every night for an hour or so even if its not empty - perhaps this is why?
and I was going to say something else but my mind just went completely blank. maybe I need a recharge too

Fact is, I have been a heavy Nokia user before I made the switch to an iPhone - culminating in the N73, which was my last.

I have not had any battery issues with my Nokias either, though the difference is probably that any given Nokia, or even Blackberry, does a lot less than what an iPhone does these days - and the closest to what iPhone does (the N95 and above) has had a LOT of battery related complaints. As such, my iPhone lasts me a full day of active use, and I do recharge it at home, the office, or my car (a habit I also had with my Nokias).

For those keeping track - still time to pick up stock, though if you missed it at $120, you might as well not bother....

Analysts: New International Deals Mean Apple Will Exceed Its 10M iPhone Goal
By Bryan Gardiner May 12, 2008

While Apple followers feverishly speculate about release dates and form factors for the new 3-G iPhone, the Cupertino company continues to quietly add to its confirmed stable of international iPhone carriers.

Over the past two weeks alone, Apple has inked new deals with wireless carriers in Asia, India, Italy, Australia, Singapore and Canada. What's truly interesting, however, is that some of these agreements are non-exclusive, meaning the iPhone will soon be available through multiple carriers in countries such as Italy and Australia.

That's a profound shift from Apple's standard MO, which generally entails selecting the largest provider in a given country and then selling the iPhone exclusively through that one channel -- and of course demanding a cut of the profits along the way. But with these new non-exclusive deals, some analysts say Apple is finally realizing its traditional business model just won't work on a global scale. Moreover, there are actually benefits to being doing away with exclusively.

By opening up to the idea of working with multiple carriers in a given country, Apple could actually do much more to squelch the international iPhone unlocking business, says IDC senior mobile analyst Chris Hazelton, and at at the same time ensure it meets (and even exceeds) its well-established goal of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of the year.

The fact that these carriers will now undoubtedly be selling a 3-G iPhone also doesn't hurt.

"It may be that these agreements are now coming so fast and furious because Apple wasn't really in a position to demand revenue share in the past," says IDC senior mobile analyst Chris Hazelton.

Aside from the fact the revenue sharing is not a custom many international carriers are used to, Hazelton notes some of the original delay to such international iPhone agreements may have come down to the device's distinct lack of 3-G.

"The original launch of the iPhone here in the U.S. was amazing," Hazelton says. "It was much less than amazing in Europe; and that's largely because of the device wasn't 3-G capable."

With a new speedier version of the phone on the horizon both here in the U.S. and abroad, Apple is likely finding it much easier to deal with international carriers based on the fact that they can now sell a device that consumers want and expect.

In an investor note on Monday, American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu even said these new deals could end more than tripling Apple's wireless subscriber opportunity from about 150 million potential customers today to approximately 470 million by the time the handset maker unveils its 3-G iPhone.

Wu says the cumulative effect on iPhone shipments by the end of 2008 will be an increase of more than 4.5 million to 14.6 million.
