Found some "leaked" pictures of the new 3G iphone that is suppose to be unveiled in June. I have no idea if they are credible or not. Who knows. These could be completely fake, but I figured I'd pass it along.

Today, iPhone was announced to be carried in Japan by Softbank, with the usual discretion that all the other countries that will be carrying iPhone starting next week have been announced.

http://66.102.9.104/translate_c?hl=en&langpair=ja%7Cen&u=http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/docs/20080604/sb.htm

Along with Hong Kong and Macau being covered by 3, I have no doubt that Taiwan will join in the fun shortly -- leaving China, beautifully, out to dry.

Other countries that have made low-key announcements so far:

Singapore, Philipines, Switzerland, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Australia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa, Turkey, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay

At the rate this is going, world domination is all but assured, and there'll be some fun crow eating starting next week towards the end of the year, by the usual analysts (especially the stock market kind) claiming how difficult it will be for Apple to reach that goal of 10 million sales...

Oh yeah, it'll all come together on June 9th (USA time), during WWDC -- and I hear iPhone 3G will not necessarily be the biggest announcement...

Apple would have to sell an extraordinary number of iphones in the next six months to meet their goal. Chances are, they will.

So with that in mind, does anyone think that Synchronoss Technologies (Nasdaq: SNCR) is a good stock? They are a company that makes money every time someone buys an iphone and hooks it up with AT&T. Recently, the stock lost 75% of its value because of all the reports of people unlocking their iphones and the subsequent lost of revenue for AT&T and SNCR.

But things may be different with the new 3G. Perhaps people will be less inclined to unlock the iphone, and, instead, stay with AT&T because of the 3G factor. Plus, there are many rumors that AT&T will be offering subsidies to stay with their service, perhaps closer to the holiday season, bringing the cost of the iphone drastically down. All of this is good for Synchronoss. Morevoer, before all the unlocking problems and rumors, SNCR had ran all the way up to $48.00.

So....

The stock is cheap ($13.85 today). It recently lost 75% of its value, flushing out lots of risk. After loosing 75%, the stock established a bottom at about $12.00, never falling below with any significance. Even with all the selling pressure in the markets in the past 2 weeks (Dow has lost 700 points), SNCR has stayed very strong, climbing over 10% while the rest of market has been falling. And lastly, Apple will presumably sell millions and millions of 3G iphones in the next year, drastically increasing revenue for AT&T and thereby SNCR.

To me, the potential upside far outweighs the downside. I think the 3G with AT&T will be very lucrative for SNCR. I bought some SNCR stock yesterday.

If people continue to unlock their phones and stay away from AT&T, this stock will have little upside. But, with the 3G capabilities and potential subsidies by AT&T, I'm betting people in the US will not be unlocking the iphone as much as in the past. Wall Street seems to think the same, as the stock has actually seen a little rally while the rest of the market has fallen hard. This may be a good, alternative, side-bet for those who have missed the recent run-up in Apple.

Smart thinking BM007 - exactly the reason I'm looking to pick up a bunch of those shares, purely for speculation, before the weekend.

Considering Apple has already booked over 6 million sold iPhones, I think they will have no trouble at all meeting their goal - my personal bet is on them exceeding their goal by quite a bit.

Great question.

In my opinion, not significant at all. Everyone has known for the last six months that the 3G iphone would be out soon. Knowing that, who would possibly spend $400 for a phone which would be severely out-dated a few months later? I tend to think that the vast majority of potential iphone customers have been waiting for the new 3G, so a decline in market share over the past 3 months seems perfectly plausible, reasonable and expected.

That's only a 3 month trend, and I think it has nothing to do with the overall momentum that you will see in the next year or two.

I think both Apple and RIMM are absolutely top-notch companies, and their phones will drastically change the entire cell-phone landscape over the next year. If either company reduces their prices in some meaningful way (perhaps subsidies through service carriers like AT&T) they will be on the verge of completely taking over the entire phone market. Over the next 5 years, people will view their phones as much more than just some plastic talking device. Both Apple and RIMM seemed the most well-positioned to capitalize on this new market momentum.

To be honest, I have no idea which company will be on top. Like Apple, RIMM has extremely loyal customers and a great product. Both companies are top-notch. But for the various media outlets to say that Apple has been recently losing market share, means absolutely nothing. Just look at both their stock prices--both are within fair range of their all-time highs. I think that trend will continue, and one will see these two companies pull further and further away from the competition over the next 18 months.

Just wait until after the holidays, when Apple reports their earnings in January 2009. I would wager that the media will have a drastically different opinion about things. Both Apple and RIMM will be in fantastic shape, and I consider both to be great investments.

Be cautious about buying Apple stock right now, ahead of next week. This stock has already ran 50% in two months. Everyone already knows what's going to happen on June 9th, and the stock price fully reflects the 3G announcement. This could be a classic "buy the rumor, sell the news" scenario. I have no idea if this will be true, but I've seen it a million times before. If Apple surprises with additional product announcements, the stock could jerk toward $200 easily. On the other hand, if Steve Jobs simply pulls the 3G out of his pocket and shows everyone what we already know, the stock could fall victim to profit-taking. I'm certain that by autumn this stock will be higher than it is today, but it may provide a better entry point in the next week or two. No need to rush into it today---This stock and company has a long, bright future.

Oh really? What's that, that's going to happen?

I have a feeling you, and everyone else, only know 25% of what's going to happen - and that's not even the biggest news

Actually, that's the last bit of advice I'd give anyone. Most brokers have proven to be morons.

iphone lost considerable market share to RIMM in the last quarter. How significant is this loss?
As Mr. Buttman pointed out - it's less of an issue of iPhone 'losing' share to RIM, but rather of iPhone sales slowing somewhat for two reasons:

- the expectation of the 3G iPhone, to be announced next week on Monday.

- the fact that the market has run completely dry of iPhones, and none have been available for 3-4 weeks.

It's easy claiming marketshare gains, when you competitor deliberately and purposely stopped selling his product - so the claims by various media are, as usually, short-sighted, and sensationalist, but ultimately inaccurate.

As pointed out earlier, with the smattering of additional countries coming online (including those that aren't even mentioned yet), the new features if iPhone II, as well as the new features of Firmware 2.0, in combination with Apple's new online services (OOps, did I just say that), and and the expansion of Apple's new WiFi platform, there will be quite a few of these journalists eating their words.

Actually, what these kind of writers do, is just flip/flop around, and laud the new features, pretending they never wrote about the sky falling - with the usual selection of pundits writing about the how a better, faster, and better performing iPhone will ultimately be the end of Apple.

I'd start thinking of shorting RIM, over the next year.
