I have a feeling you, and everyone else, only know 25% of what's going to happen

That's what some people may believe...

Shorting RIMM stock? That's exceptionally risky. As I see it, the only reason RIMM could fall back is because it's up over 50% in three months, and has nearly tripled since last summer. That's an incredible amount of momentum that you would be swimming against. The long term momentum is clearly upward, even if it falls to short-term profit taking. If it did pull back, it's not because it has a fundamental business problem, like the bond insurers, the home builders or the investment banks up to their ears in poorly rated CDO's.

I own Apple stock and don't plan on selling it anytime soon. It's a company that makes virtually no mistakes, and is well-positioned to create more shareholder equity for the foreseeable future, just as RIMM. I'm convinced Apple will be worth quite a bit more in both the short term (6-12 months) and long term going out 5 years. I feel the same about RIMM. Even if Apple were to surpass all iphone goals and expectations, RIMM could still continue to grow and increase shareholder equity. The cell phone market is clearly large enough to support two major growth companies.

If you're a new investor, I wouldn't rush into Apple ahead of June 9th. There is a reasonable chance the stock could fall back after they unveil the 3G, just as it did in the days after they unveiled the MacAir. Whether it does or not, I have no idea. All I can do is measure what's reasonable and probable.

The Apple story will be a very long and very profitable one. I see no reason to jump into the stock after a sharp 50% run-up, and 2 trading days before they announce a major product that Wall Street already knows about. If someone wanted to make short-term money on the 3G announcement, they should have bought Apple two months ago. Trying to make any sort of significant short-term money on Apple within 2 days of the 3G announcement is very tricky.

Brokers? That was part of a joking disclaimer, more than anything else.

Lastly, I think it is reasonable that Apple's growth from 2005-2015 could be very similar to Microsoft's growth from 1990-2000. There is so much future upside to the Apple story that their stock is a screaming bargain no matter what happens on June 9th.

Personally believe that the new iphone announcement has been over hyped and that AAPL will hit the $ 170 level soon after the announcement.
What makes you think so?

Realistically, and historically, AAPL stock always took a slight dip after a big announcement, especially the better the announcement - though this trend was broken the last time it happened, and the stock took off afterwards.

I suspect that with all that will be announced on Monday, there's a good chance of a repeat.

Regarding RIM stock -- I know of at least 5 major corporations that plan on shifting all of their Blackberry usage to iPhones, almost exclusively - that would not only mark a significant loss to RIM, but once this kind of news spreads, it will undermine RIM's market position. Combine that with the stockmarket being entirely perception and emotion based, and you could end up with the same 20% dip RIM took right after the iPhone announcement in January 2007.

OK....So everyone already knows that Apple is highly likely to introduce a 3G iphone on Monday.

Does anyone think Apple will surprise everyone with another product announcement, or some other surprise regarding the new iphone? Perhaps a China contract, or 3G ipod? Anyone think Apple will start selling plasma televisions with bluetooth links to your computer in the next year?

How about a touch screen iMac?

Or how about a gentle tug on your earlobe and suddenly--with no loss of time--you're transported from any situation anywhere in the world straight through the space-time continuum and into Soi Cowboy with a cold beer in your hand.

Call it iThai. $99 each way.

Now THAT would bump Apple stock above $200.

Perhaps a China contract
Not likely, and irrelevant anyway - I am more inclined to believe an announcement of a Taiwanese carrier - as Hong Kong and Macau carriers are already in the bag - thus leaving 'China' as the odd man out, and quite at risk of losing major face...

Ridiculous - and, No!

How about a touch screen iMac?
Do the following exercise - hold up your arms out in front of you, off the desk, at roughly parallel to the desk.

Now maintain that posture for about 30 minutes.

Now ask that question again.

I like that Thailand portal as an idea better, and it's more likely to happen

First remove iMac from pedestal. Lay it horizontally on your desk. Hold your arms out in front of you, reach for the screen of the iMac laying on the desk. Does it feel better?

Oh yes I have, several times, with prototypes following the same ergonomic principle actually, a few years ago. But not with a multi-touch enabled iMac, obviously.

Mr Duck

First, the touch screen iMac is a few years away in the form of an iMac tablet. I threw it out there for conversation, not dumb sarcasm. Apple notebooks will see touch screen innovations in the near future. Dragging, pinching and typing could be done on a portable notebook or desk-top tablet, with similar operational mannerisms as the iphone. Notebooks should have it first, and iMac tablets flat on a desk should follow.

Here's an article regarding the patent filing that could lead to this.
http://www.macrumors.com/2008/02/19/apple-depicts-advanced-multitouch-gesturing-control-panel-in-mac-os-x/

Here's an excerpt from an article about tablet Macs:

"The iPhone developed the way a lot of cool things do: with a false start. A few years ago Jobs noticed how many development dollars were being spent—particularly in the greater Seattle metropolitan area—on what are called tablet PCs: flat, portable computers that work with a touchscreen instead of a mouse and keyboard. Jobs, being Jobs, figured he could do better, so he had Apple engineers noodle around with a tablet PC. When they showed him the touchscreen they came up with, he got excited. So excited he forgot all about tablet computers."
http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1575410,00.html

And another article about desktop tablets:
http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2007/05/first_look_micr.html

Secondly, a television by Apple is not ridiculous in the slightest. Dell currently sells five different brands including their own. I can't imagine it happening within a year, but it's certainly in sight. It's perfectly fitting with their desire to connect the home computer with the home entertainment system---something they've been trying to do for years. Music, internet, videos, movies, photos all need to be moved off the desk and into the family entertainment room. The AppleTV device was a great start. Apple has made no secret of the fact they want to control all media in the house. An Apple TV screen is a long-shot, but certainly not ridiculous. An Apple patio umbrella would be ridiculous.

For you to splice up my questions regarding potential iphone announcements or Apple products, and methodically answer "Yes" is meaningless without a further statement as to what those products may be. Your repetitive "yes" response is useless.

I must say, I'm rather surprised by your lack of knowledge regarding future Apple products and projects. I'm astonished you haven't heard of the tablet idea, and that you would think someone must type vertically with their arms stretched and hovering across the desk.

You really think the Chinese market of a billion people is irrelevant? If only 1% of that population are viable iphone candidates, that leaves 10 million, which is still 25% greater than Hong Kong and Macau combined. For the parts of China that do not have the 3G infrastructure, Apple could still sell the current iphone.

I was just throwing random ideas out there that I have read about over the past few years. Do you have any product suggestions, or are you only capable of "yes"?
