Well, that's fortuitous timing:

DTAC, True Move get nod for 3G service
By Usanee Mongkolporn

CAT Telecom has allowed Total Access Communication (DTAC) and True Move to start developing their 3G cellular broadband services.

CAT spokesman Pongsapat Pongcharoen said after CAT's board meeting on Friday that CAT would ask for permission from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to adjust the current use of the 800MHz band by DTAC and CAT's Code Division Multiple Access 2000 1-x cellular service in order to free up 5MHz for True Move.

CAT has to make the adjustment to meet the request of True Move for 800MHz bands to develop the 3G service using High Speed Packet Access technology.

Though DTAC had sought CAT's permission many times to develop the 3G HSPA service on its existing 800MHz bands, CAT had stalled, pending its finding of any 800MHz bands for True Move, which has only the 1800MHz spectrum.

If the NTC gives its approval to CAT's spectrum adjustment, CAT will talk with both of its private cellular concession holders to tweak their concessions to allow them to roll out the 3G service.

In exchange for CAT's approval of the HSPA service, both cellular operators have to allow CAT to co-brand with them. For example, when they launch the 3G service, their service brand has to have CAT-DTAC or CAT-True M ove in it.

They also have to turn to mainly using CAT's international call gateway to provide overseas call service to their customers, instead of mainly using their own gateways.

Advanced Info Service, which holds a concession from TOT Plc, has already launched its 3G service on its existing 900MHz spectrum in Chiang Mai.

DTAC and True Move have kept urging CAT to allow them to develop the 3G service to catch up with AIS.

CAT's board also decided not to grant additional spectrums to its other private mobile phone service concession holder, Digital Phone, for the 3G service, given that DPC has few subscribers and has contributed little in concession fees to CAT.

DPC has requested additional 800MHz spectrum bands from CAT, citing its need to be treated on an equal basis with True Move.

Pongsapat said CAT's board also asked management to enter into negotiations with True Move on the plan to extend its concession, which expires in five years.

I couldn't have been more surprised myself.

$199 -- GLOBALLY! (well, where it is carried)

Not surprisingly, China and Russia are excluded and isolated. Matters little to Russia, but will certainly start applying pressure on China. Basically, the only way to deal with China is by ignoring them. Nicely done.

Thailand appears to still be excluded, but that may change now that there's a 3G rollout on the horizon.

Certainly, at those price pints ($199/$299), the iPhone will not only easily meet Apple's 10 million sales goal, but will certainly continue to dominate the globe.

RIM is so dead. Palm's already dead.

Some minor disappointments:

- no 32GB version (though I have a feeling that's in the wings, either for the Holiday Season, or by MacWorld 2009).

- same camera - I was hoping Apple would at least update the camera to a 3.2 megapixel model. Not a dealbreaker, but nevertheless suck.

- no video recording capabilities - albeit with the App Store, it seems as if Apple is leaving that ball in the developers' court, and there's already some nice video apps brewing.

- front facing camera (I suspect they are saving the video conferencing capability once they can deliver it seamlessly and in the Apple manner)

There are those folks who are endlessly whining over the lack of MMS on the iPhone ("because other phones have it"), but those folks need to, maybe, get a clue and find out what email is all about -- and, again, I'm sure some third-party is going to jump on that opportunity and make some revenue from the stupidity of other users.

Some niceties:

- $199 - now EVERYONE can have one.
- pretty much eliminated the grey market of iPhones (since its everywhere)
- secure OS that aims to be unhackable (and could very well be) will now apply the thumb screws to China and Russia (who thought they didn't need to make deals, because they are already hosting all the hacked and unlocked phones - whoops!)

Just in from Gizmodo:
-----------
We just talked to AT&T’s President of National Distribution Glenn Lurie, who gave us all the pricing and activation details for the iPhone 3G, which won’t be getting special treatment anymore. It will be using all AT&T’s standard voice and data plans, which means $30 for unlimited 3G data for consumers, $45 for business users on top of voice. Also, no in-home activation for iPhone 3G — it will have to be activated in store (at AT&T or Apple Store), which takes 10-12 minutes, meaning that first day line is going to SUCK.

So, the data plan goes up $10 a month if you want 3G, and you have to activate the phone in the store, because the $199 price is subsidized. Bad news if you want to buy an iPhone 3G on day one, and worse news if you want to buy one to unlock for use on another carrier.
-----------

Since this will most likely be the same story with all supported carriers, I'll be curious how this will affect the unlock community - seeing as this procedure pretty much dried up the supply of available phones. I don't doubt there will be some phones finding their way onto the open market - but since they can't be unlocked easily, there'll be little point in greymarketing them.

I believe (speculation) that Apple would not have dropped the price as they did, if they were not certain about securing the system.

At this point, all hope for a true unlocked 3G iPhone rests with France, where the prior iPhone sold for $999 in an unlocked state - I wonder if that still holds true.

At this rate, the best hope will probably be a method to replicate Apple's activation process - and since that might no longer be done via iTunes, that further complicates issues for the unlocking and jailbreak community.

Bummer, eh?

Good to see that Apple understood the message the market and the mobile operators was sending to it about the iPhone and went to a more traditional business model. The first approach was very "Steve Job", but this new one is more realistic and opens the door to iPhone to everyone. That was the major point of the WWDC for me, the rest being mostly as expected, with little surprise.

It's very funny to see that the iPhone is announced in quite a few African countries including for example Mali and Equatorial Guinea, but that China and Southeast Asia, apart from Singapore and the Philippines are out for now... Now that's an interesting development...

Let's see how the new apps ecosystem will fare economically and in which direction it will evolve over time.

That was also expected, but it's nevertheless reassuring that Apple decided to focus on stability, quality and performance for Snow Leopard. Its predecessor was obviously rushed, and unfortunately favored new features too much over stability and performance. Unresponsive or massively slowed systems, forever spinning wheels of death and kernel panics have become a little bit too common for some administrators and developers with Leopard, leading to unsavory comparisons with the infamous systems of another vendor. That needed to be addressed urgently and this is coming. I am eager to see details about "grand central" though.

Yeah, sorry for being way too right on about that one -- I guess I was too busy copying from the rumors sites, right
