AmTech: iPhone 3G tradeoffs help Apple, public

Neither Apple, its investors or the public at large should be overly concerned about tradeoffs Apple has made in the pricing of the iPhone 3G, writes analyst Shaw Wu of American Technology Research. Apple confirmed yesterday that in exchange for getting carriers to subsidize the new device, it is dropping revenue sharing requirements in most cases; buyers will meanwhile have to pay an extra $10 per month on their monthly subscriptions.

For Apple, Wu suggests, any lost sharing income will be made up for by higher unit sales. The public will get a two- to five-times speed increase, and for every million iPhones sold, it is believed that investors will receive an extra $0.10-0.15 in EPS over a stretch of eight quarters, only a slight decrease over previous estimates of $0.15-0.20. Wu continues to recommend Apple stock as a buy, with a $220 price target.

its a big enough market for what rim wants - theirs is more of a specialist business tool, iphones still for show offs - the only good things on an iphone are things that any normal person doesnt use daily, like a direct link to youtube or ebay, or enlarging maps or photos by touching the screen
you still cant take a photo and email it, theres no flash or video recording

people will always choose between pepsi and coke, iphone and blackberry and so on, I dont know why you make all this into a pissing contest over a $200 piece of plastic

technology changes and evolves all the time anyway
apple is good at what it does, rim is good at what they do
plenty of people in the world to go round making money for both companies

so is jobs hoping that if an iphone is only $200 that you will buy one AND an ipod itouch imac etc?
its like saying would you rather have a merc or 2 hondas?

imho

over to you daffy for your incisive comments!

I must be missing something, since that's one of the main things I'm doing with my iPhone, as are many others - in fact, the iPhone is the only phone I've used that makes this process quick and enjoyable.

Clearly, you've never even touched one, or seriously looked into what the capabilities are.

Do a lot of poseurs buy one? Sure, it's a status symbol.

Is it excellent at what it does? You bet - that's why people like them.

So, how does this "can't take a photo and email it" part work for you?

while we are at quoting analysts...

Investors should concentrate on the long-term when considering the impact of the iPhone 3G, says the analyst firm Piper Jaffray. Expanding on earlier arguments, Piper notes that despite Apple losing out on subscription revenue from iPhones, its CY08 and CY09 shipment predictions remain unaffected, at 12.9 and 45 million units. Apple is moreover believed to be charging carriers approximately $466 per iPhone, with companies such as AT&T absorbing a subsidy of roughly $267. Wholesale iPhone prices are only expected to decline to $425 during CY08.

What may be of greater interest to investors is the impact of the App Store, as Piper is predicting an average of two apps sold per user per year, at an average cost of $5 each. If there are 78 million iPhone owners by the end of of CY09 there should be $780 million in extra revenue, with 30 percent ($234 million) diverted to Apple. That in turn could represent 3 percent extra for Apple's CY09 operating income.

Just reading your last ramblings on China, which are quite funny as usual. Among some other nonsense:

By effectively bringing every single market around China online (including picking Hutchison, a Dutch brand, for Hong Kong and Macau)

Even for you, that seems a bit much. I think you got a little bit carried away there. So tell us anyway: since when is Hutchison a Dutch brand (you're not talking about the long failed collaboration with KPN are you?) and what is Apple's strategy to bring every single market around China online? That's quite a lot of markets btw, and even some of the most important ones have not announced the iPhone yet...

The analyst at Piper Jaffray is most likely Gene Munster. Be very cautious of this guy, as he recommends buying Apple shares no matter what the broader market environment may be. As all the hedge funds, money-market fund managers and institutional funds were rotating their money out of tech stocks and into commodity stocks this past Dec-March, Munster was recklessly telling everyone to buy Apple and Google anyway. The day before Apple and Google released their earnings in January 2008, he was in the media telling everyone to buy both stocks ahead of earnings. As we all know, Apple lost $85/share in the weeks to follow, while Google lost $300/share in a matter of weeks, as well.

Munster is really good with his Apple research, and Apple will certainly be worth more in a year than it is today. But anytime I see him in the media, I use appropriate discretion. He will tell everyone to buy Apple, even if the entire tech-market is in a broad decline, as money rotates from one sector to another. I wonder how many people listened to him in January, and then saw their Apple position plummet by 40% in 3 weeks?

As you probably know, I love Apple stock, too. However, when I see Piper Jaffray/Gene Munster talking about Apple or Google, I filter that information differently than with other analysts. You will never hear him say one thing negative. He seems to have an unconditional "strong buy" rating on the stock, no matter what.

Just some random info to keep in the back of your mind.....

Oddly, after that bit of Munster-bashing, I actually agree with his 3G opinion.

Unrelated, anyone read all those rumors regarding Steve Jobs gaunt, sickly appearance yesterday?

Below is the video for anyone who wants to see the entire 3G WWDC presentation from yesterday. Most of the stuff is truly mind-blowing.

Dumb rumors, at best - compare to his appearance during Macworld 2008, when he looked the same -- only difference being that he shaved his beard, which makes his face appear thinner.

It's one of those things that some people love to start circulating in hopes of starting a panic on the stock....

As for FIB - you're getting repetitive in your ability to contribute nothing.

I heard Jobs is finding negotiations with the Dear Leader a bit perplexing.
