He was a No-show at the RT despite all of his pre-apperance hype. I guess he must have been busy in his room trying to figure out how to get his IPhone working in ILand.

VoIP is already up and running. Just one version for now.

Its not too bad, a close friend of mine got it working, although she mentioned that you need a home/other computer running as a client then you can call away, especially good for those with the unlimited Skype plan (US/Canada) for $30; due to the double charge using the service....

I read it as "skype running on your home computer can be remotely caused to dial your cell phone number." Might be useful, but different than a VOIP phone...

Well VoIP for the iPhone whenever it will be implemented/hacked will be a laugh as such..

over the Edge network....

unless you plan to hit wifi spots all over your particular city or home.

Pretty convoluted solution if you ask me. Both Jajah and Talkety are better options for VOIP on iPhone.

But it does seem they have what should be a workable chat solution. I always thought that some one should be able to develop an IM chat client using AJAX on Safari that repeatedly polls the IM server for messages. A pull solution instead of the server pushing IM messages to the client but it should work.

I think this is what SoonR has done.

DaffyDuck
Been MIA due to (originally) jetlag (laid dow for a one hour nap, woke up 10 hours later).

Anyway, just to bring this thread back up to speed, and to address the usual peanut gallery...

- iPhones are now available in Bangkok (MBK) at 'Winner' shop on 4th floor.
- iPhones are still not unlocked, hence phone capability does not work locally. Right now, it's a $600 iPod and WiFi communicator/browser/email. This is temporary, as unlocking efforts are underway.
- There are some, allegedly, iPhones on eBay that are unlocked, and are working with AIS/DTAC SIMs in Thailand. Those go for $1,200 and you'd be foolish to spend that much, plus, those don't have EDGE data capabilities working (due to APN being hardcoded, it seems, and not taken from SIM).

The above is no surprise, simply because the iPhone is currently designed and marketed as a US-only device, specifically for the AT&T network. It's also *not* a shortcoming of the device, as it does work as expected if you are in the US, or (once activated) use it with roaming internationally (of course, you'd be paying AT&T's extortionist rates).

In terms of VOIP clients - those are all web-based hacks right now (same services that offer web-based VOIP right now), and invariably charge some access fees for their services -- so, what's the use. About it using EDGE, and performance being laughable - well, the same would apply to phones like Nokia's N80, N73, or other phones supporting the SIP protocol for direct VOIP, now wouldn't it? The N80 supports WiFi, just like iPhone, while the N73 also suports 3G networks, which of course would result in better speed.

Let's talk 3G networks, shall we?

Granted, having support for 3G would yield better speeds, right? That's the classic argument from those naysayers clamoring how 'lame' the iPhone is, right?

So, how much of a 3G network do we have here in Thailand, and how much of that 3G network do you use here in Thailand - or rather, how much a trail do you blaze using these super fast 3G networks in Thailand, without the use of which the iPhone is useless to you? In other words, I'm sure you have super nifty 3G capable phones, but how much of the speed do you use?

Oh wait, you mean there isn't actually any real, reliable implementation of 3G's CDMW, WCDMA, or UTMS in Thailand? Yes, there's plans, but right now, none of the major carriers provide any sort of reliable solution (yes, HUTCH offers wireless CDMA, but good luck getting reliable performance out of it).

So, where does that leave your "without 3G, the iPhone sucks" argument, where it comes to Thailand? Pretty much with no leg to stand on (unless you are in Japan, China or other non-Thailand places).

'nuff said.
