Looks like Microsoft might not be doing everything right:

Investor: MS has "Google-envy," distracted

Microsoft has distracted itself to where it's no longer a viable investment, Greenlight Capital investor David Einhorn says in a comment on the results of his company's summer quarter. He accuses the Windows developer of an "overaggressive and almost panicky" approach to competing with Google, at first launching an attempt to buy Yahoo only to overcompensate for its unsuccessful deal by spending large amounts of money on its own efforts to compete with Google in search and web ads.

Einhorn and Greenlight Capital have as a result "given up" on investing in Microsoft and see the latter's chief Steve Ballmer as preoccupied with Google to a point where Windows, Office and other established products are suffering and affecting the company's overall business.

"We doubt the opportunity is what they say it is and wish [Microsoft] focused on its core strength," Einhorn says. "We feel better investing in companies where management at least appears to be trying to work for shareholders."

The software firm in recent months has lately taken to trying to correct its perceived neglect of Windows by launching a $300 million ad to restore the operating system's image, which it believes has been turned into a stereotype by Apple and cost the company sales as customers become hesitant to upgrade from Windows XP.

Shredded Wheat
After about 10 years of using my old Dell Dimension desktop running Windows Millenium I have just bought my 1st laptop.

I went for a Dell XPS M1530 and upgraded a few of the bits so I've got 4GB of dual channel memory, a 500GB hard drive and a 256MB graphic card. It comes with Vista Home Premium ready loaded. I was really looking forward to playing with this new kit but it takes some getting used to.

The main thing that irks me is the text/font size is really tiny - not like my old easy to read desktop screen. I have changed something called the.dpi setting to make the font larger but the screen still gives me eyestrain and headaches if I use the laptop for too long. Is the font size a Vista problem or just something that you have to learn to live with if you have a 15 inch screen?

Now I have changed the.dpi setting the problem is not with the font when I use MSWord documents, but the font size when text appears when surfing the net or when dialogue boxes come up in Vista.

I find myself preferring to use my 10 year old Dell Dimension desktop in preference to a brand new and much more powerful laptop and surely that cannot be right. Does anyone else have problems with font size with Vista or laptops generally and how do you solve them please?

The other thing that irks me is that a lot of the games I have will not load up due to "compatability issues" with Vista. But that is less of a problem than the font size. I can always buy new games or download patches (but wish I did not have to).

Maybe you should try downgrading your system to Windows XP, and trying that on for size.

You may discover that your stated problems mostly go away!

it looks like Windows XP refuses to die..... or is it that people refuse to embrace Vista?

M$ has extended the expired deadline of June 30th; OEMs will be able to buy the OS until June 30, 2010, or one year after general availability of the next version of Windows, codenamed Windows 7

Don't know if it's a good news or not, certainly one feels the pain for those hapless users still shackled to the PC / Windows eco-system

The more MS needs to extend the Windows XP lifespan, the more users switch to the Mac OS

Of course, there's hapless idiots who stick with MS (even Vista) all the way, mostly out of spite against 'that other dumb operating system', but hey, we get to laugh at those.

apparently they're all waiting for Windows 7 to bypass Vista completely, only to find out that W7 is Vista mark II

Linux is the answer.
Ubuntu is easier to install and use than winblows and the many former winblows users find the Kubuntu version user friendly.
OpenSuSE Linux is also an excellent, easy to use, Linux distribution.

Agree. I run Ubuntu for most of my stuff now, and it is just great. I have a Windows XP inside a VirtualBox for the few things I miss.
