That article from seekingalpha.com seems strangely familiar.

Actually, it's at $172. It had even dipped to $165 by mid-day Friday before recovering a bit. In the week before the 3G, it had touched $190. By playing it smart, you were able to save about $20 per share.

Great job!

Why did it dip?

http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/06/13/steve-jobs-life-after-the-whipple/

The stock took a healthy jump after the keynote, with analysts predicting that Apple will easily meet their 10 million goal (some even predicting exceeding it with 18 million), and then someone mentioned how thin Steve Jobs looked during the keynote -- a story everyone ran away with, and which soon resulted in the usual irrational sell frenzy, with the stock dipping.

Overall, ironically, this maintained the trend of AAPL dipping right after Apple announces record breaking profits, and products that are bound to sell even better. While I did expect the stock to maintain, or rise based on the announcement, I did not take Jobs' appearance into account, and didn't expect (though, should have) the sudden panic this resulted in.

Nevertheless, I simply see this as yet another buying opportunity to amass more of AAPL.

Regarding Steve Jobs' health, you may want to review this Fortune article, which is pretty written and well-balanced, and provides some valuable insight into not just the procedure Steve Jobs has had 5 years ago, but ultimately that his thinning is quite expected for the procedure.

Time to re- think one's investment strategies??
No.

But don't mind if you do.

I generally tend to look at the big picture, not the "zowie, news of the day/hour" to influence my long term strategy.

I believe we have discussed this earlier in the thread, and that the 'buy and hold' strategy is by far the best.

That being said, all those being bullish on RIM - good for you. In my case, knowing that 50% of the large corporate clients I work with are essentially dumping their many years long investment in RIM, nearly overnight, to shift to iPhones as the 100% corporate standard, lends me some confidence in my decisions. Granted, being involved directly in these corps does provide me with some inside knowledge (without legally qualifying as such), that the average investor (or even analyst) does not have.

I would suggest we compare market shares of Apple and RIM in the smartphone market again, by next year, around June of 2009 (though the first seismic shifts should be noticeable around January of 2009), when I theorize that RIM may have lost 20% of their current position.

Why?

It starts with the fact that at $199 the Blackberry is nearly irresistible to consumers, especially since now (with AT&T) the Blackberry and iPhone data plans are identical (which not an accident), so the iPhone costs less than the higher end BBerries (who wants a low-end 'free' BBerry), and in combination with MobileMe will offer Enterprise-like functionality for $99/year (or, $60, if you know where and how to shop). For those seeking this sort of functionality, that's a better deal, more and better functionality, and cheaper than RIM's offering).

Next up is what Apple's iPhone offers to the Enterprise IT group -- by eliminating the RIM Blackberry server (and associated expensive licenses) completely, and talking to the Exchange server directly, the IT group can save not just hundred's of thousands in license fees per year, but additionally also gains a more secure, and more flexible platform that they can easily deploy custom software to. That last part, by the way, was a huge draw for one client.

The above two will combine to very quickly chip away at RIM's current market dominance - all they are offering so far, is a response to last year's iPhone, and a sad copy, in fact - but they are not addressing the peripheral services and synching capabilities which Apple provides (RIM leaves Mac synch services to a third party app they bundle, for example, that doesn't do such good a job)..

Like I said, let's compare notes again in 6 and 12 months.

Maybe if apple were to develop a more honest approach to the iPhone, we wouldn't need any rumors.

Furthermore, it's really uplifting to see sarcastic remarks like those of Mr.
DaffyDuck, with no substance at all. It might be nice for them to
know that they are working on awesome stuff, thinking what stupid fools we are
for doubting all-mighty apple, yet does it really matter if any awesome things
surface after everybody has already moved on? How many software companies
still develop actively for the iPhone? How many have abandoned it? If
the number of the latter is larger than the other, you know you are in trouble.

It seems to me that apple is employing a clever strategy of hiring top notch
people like Scott Forstall, and thus effectively silencing them. It is interesting that
time after time people that have contributed greatly to software and support
for the iPhone have been hired by apple (seen as a sparc of hope), only to
see all creative endeavors of these people locked into apple's ivory towers.
Also, interesting to see that those same people are now critical of the same
people that they used to be part of. I guess a big salary and living in Ivory
towers has that effect on some people.

Anyone have any ideas how ipod sales will be impacted given the new $199 3G? Seems to me that Apple might be cannibalizing one of the three pillars of their business.

Any thoughts?

You don't actually keep up on current affairs, do you? At all?

Why do you even bother commenting, if you are clueless?

yes this is a pro iphone forum so what do you expect from daffy

theres an equal number of pro blackberry forums out there, each picking faults in iphones and singing the praises of blackberrys and share prices

when was the last time you saw a photo of a celebrity with an iphone?
they are always holding blackberrys
the only iphones I see these days are in the hands of bar girls

anyway this debate is useless because it always ends in daffy getting narky cos we are picking on him and him telling us about his shares have gone up $1 or something

so, post away at your peril, but dont expect a reasoned and civilised response here, you will always get flamed down as being a moron for not understanding the miracle that is the apple i-phone - so good that the managed to improve it

cant wait for the 3.5g version to come out next!

Of course you can't. 3.5g is basically HSDPA and the newly announced iPhone handles it already.

The new $199 3G is actually not quite a new $199 3G. Until someone manages to unlock it (or you are willing to buy the probably outrageously priced French unlocked iPhone), it's actually a new $199 + $30/month for 2 years 3G, at least with AT&T. The phone part comes with a leash. I think we are going to see an update in Apple's range of leash-less devices sooner than later, with quite an interesting continuum of possible feature sets.
