Remember that google will be coming out with their own smart phone, shortly.

A small clarification: Android, to which you apparently refer, is not a smartphone, but a software platform. Smartphones based on Android, if any, will not be released by Google, but by other smartphone manufacturers, presumably those which are part of the Open Handset Alliance (HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung). HTC Dream, announced now in fall, should be the first device.

Why doesn't AAPL just go ahead and announce that Steve has not had a recurrence of pancreatic cancer?

No need to call Daffy on that one, anyone with a sense of decency can answer:

1) because, despite his position as CEO of Apple and whatever key role he plays at the company, Steve Jobs has a right to privacy, and
2) because obviously no amount of denying is going to detract the easily influenced among us to believe rumors on Steve Jobs health and spread them.

it's actually a new $199 + $30/month for 2 years 3G, at least with AT&T.
You missed the part where 70 countries are going to be carrying it - and unless you believe AT&T is the main carrier in every country, you should know that each country will have their own tariffs and contract rates - thus, for example, in Germany you can get it for €1 and in the UK for £1.

There's a great TCO analysis of the 3G iPhone on O2, right here:

http://www.desmondelliott.co.uk/2008/06/13/the-free-iphone-3g-on-o2/

ETF fee in the US, to get out of the AT&T contract, is $175, after 30 days. Hence, the cost of the phone in the US is $375 (close to the original $399). In France, I believe, the price for an unlocked iPhone is €599, for an unlocked, contract free iPhone is €799 (these prices may adjust after July 17th).

FIB pretty much nails it regarding the Steve Jobs situation - lastly, you may want to look up the Whipple Procedure (if you're too lazy to click on the link I provided earlier, which some people appear to be).

when was the last time you saw a photo of a celebrity with an iphone?
Barak Obama, on the campaign trail?

On nearly every television show over the past season, iPhones have been used by the main cast.

Again, I gotta remark "Don't get out much, do you?"

I can't help it, if all you (and that other guy) can do is simply to invent things (or display your own ignorance).

RIMM ahead of AAPL:

http://seekingalpha.com/article/81385-overall-it-spending-remains-soft-research-in-motion-comes-out-ahead?source=d_email

Time to re- think one's investment strategies??

RIMM stock up nearly 25% since Jan 2, AAPL stock down nearly 10% since Jan 2. That’s a heck of a lot of ground to make up. APPL would have to get pretty close to the $250 mark without RIMM gaining hardly any to equalize a first of the year investment comparison.

On the other hand if one wants to play then AAPL has shown some potential with enough peaks and valleys to be dangerous over the past year of so.

RIMM took a hit due to AAPL entering the market, has more made up for it now. But with over 80% of the smart phone market where will the future growth for RIMM come from?

No I did not miss it. This merely changes the numbers involved, not the principle of the "leash" (again except for France).

Maybe from those two consumer products gluttons;
China and India ?

Yes but they might be facing a bit of a hump in India (though probably not a long term hump), and in China as far as I know they only have one model available (8700), and it will be something like a year from the release of the first model before they have scheduled to release another model. I guess the current lack of models and such in China could be viewed as lots of untapped potential.

India:

China:
http://seekingalpha.com/article/72311-research-in-motion-to-launch-new-blackberry-in-china

Note - some not so pleasent comments about the India issue at the end of the China artical.

However, it has been nearly a year since RIMM has had reported earning that have creamed estimates – something they did pretty regularly in ’05, ’06, and early ’07. Also they seem to be trading at relatively high multiples. Oh, and I read somewhere a comparison of RIMM and Nokia – something along the lines of RIMM accounts for less than 1% of the total cell phone market and have a market value around $70-$80 billion, while Nokia what has like 40% of the cell phone market has a market value of over $100 billion. Granted the 1% RIMM market share is at the top end but this still makes me wonder a bit about how much more gas RIMM can have in it’s tanks to drive the stock price.

That being said RIMM is at around $140 a share and even in the artical about the possible short-term issue in India they are calling RIMM a buy with a target of $200.

Flu wipes $19bn off Apple stock
Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs may have had the costliest sickie in history after rumours of his illness helped wipe $19bn (£9.7bn) off Apple’s share price. Jobs last week unveiled the new iPhone at a San Francisco conference and, although it was acknowledged that the cut-price device would have an impact on the company’s short-term profitability, world domination and enormous profits would surely follow. According to the Times, the problem came when bloggers scrutinised the video of Jobs’ presentation and decided he looked a bit under the weather, which spiralled into rumours of the Apple supremo’s imminent death. Not without some reason: Jobs recovered from pancreatic cancer a few years previously, which was only revealed after he was in the clear. This time, Apple announced that Jobs had a “common bug”, but that didn’t stop the share prices sliding most unhealthily.

Nokia rings changes with two new business phones
Nokia, the world’s leading mobile phone manufacturer, has unveiled two new models aimed at business users. However, their success could be limited as neither includes the BlackBerry e-mail service of Research In Motion (RIM) which had been supported on all of Nokia’s previous corporate handsets. The sliding E66 and the E71, which at just 10mm thick is the thinnest phone in the world with a full QWERTY keyboard, should be available from June. According to Reuters, Nokia is responsible for 40 per cent of all mobile phone sales globally, but the market for business users is dominated by RIM's BlackBerry devices and service, which among other things allows easy access to corporate e-mail servers on the hop. Richard Windsor, an analyst for financial services group Nomura, was sceptical: “The problem is they [Nokia] don’t offer device independence and they don't have the embedded position that RIM does.”
