I have heard, though, that these numbers need to be in magnetic ink, which
precious few laserwriters handle.

So, what is the real scoop on this subject?
I would recommend you construct sentences that are in context with the conversation.

Alright, then, here's the facts:

Software companies developing for the iPhone last year : 3

Software companies developing for the iPhone this year : 5,000

Software companies wanting to develop for the iPhone this year: 25,000 (number of applications, of which Apple only approved a fraction of).

why not make this a fair comparison and tell us how many companies develop for rim, then we know whether to be amazed at your great phone, or wonder why 250,000 develop for rim?

The APIs have been added to the BlackBerry Java Development Environment, a development toolset based on Sun's Java Micro Edition (JME). RIM says that over 125,000 developers have downloaded the BlackBerry JDE so far

125,000 only
sorry

Well, okay, if you feel the need to throw out artificially inflated number (i.e. the number of downloads, instead of the number of actual, registered developers that produce actual products).

The iPhone SBK has been downloaded 250,000 times - which does not mean there are 250,000 developers out there (nor does it mean there are 125,000 RIM developers out there).

Obviously there are Blackberry developers out there - there's a plethora of utilities, business apps, and even hacks (some to make BBerry look more like an iPhone, even) out there. Though, considering how generally developer unfriendly RIM has been, it remains to be seen what the landscape will look like in 6-12 months from now.

I gave you the number of actual developers, gauged by the numbers that were registered for Apple's developer conference.

How many Blackberry developers showed up to the Blackberry developer conference? Oh, I'm sorry - there IS NO Blackberry developer conference. RIM only felt about starting one this year. Considering how long RIM has been around, how come they never felt they needed developers before?

Additionally, Apple established the 100 Million dollar iFund, for iPhone developer start ups... RIM follows with their 150 Million Blackberry Developer Fund -- who's following here?

Doesn't look to me like RIM is leading anywhere...

how many mercedes parts manufacturers show up to mercedes design meetings?

rim and blackberry has plenty / enough applications on it - they dont need all the gimmicks that you love so much on your iphone
i mean im sure u use your google maps every day, and zoom in and out with your finger tips, and connect to youtube daily too, good for you

most blackberry users use it as a proper tool not a toy
thats why its pointless u keep arguing about how great it is against the blackberry
u might as well compare a western whore with a thai whore
both built for different uses

if you compare an iphone AS A PHONE or email device against a blackberry then 90% of honest iphoner-s would admit the blackberry is fair superior

but yes an iphone has some great gimmicks on it
should I wish to see if my apl share went up $1 or not then I can press one icon and find out immediately

well you said it - BECAUSE THEY NEVER FELT THEY NEEDED THEM PROBABLY???
what is there to develop, its a great handset, call quality, easy to use, and instant email service

its not a case of following anyone
you can argue apple followed nokia then by getting into the phone business at all

or why they use "GOOGLE" maps?
why cant apple develop their own gps system

it goes on and on
like I said, you will never hear a bad word against apple, but you will not compare like for like

in your eyes apple can do wrong
im happy for you, great, I hope you share goes up even higher
next you will be trying to compare the mac book air against a normal laptop

we all now you love apple so why do you keep on about it!!!!

I believe that the difference between our two arguments is that you look at the iPhone from your point of view in terms of what you like and need, while I tend to look at a bigger picture, in terms of what is good for the end user in the long run. I was not arguing whether a person using a iPhone right now would be better off getting an Blackberry, but what would be a better machine for a new user who is looking at them right now. I wasn't arguing that the iPhone is a bad family, but merely that in the long run the Blackberry offers more benefits to the average user.

I do not believe at all that the iPhone represents a better value at this time. How can a machine that is hardly being supported by its parent company, with very little software support and the likely possibility of obsolescence represent a better value? The consumer wants something that will last him, grow with him and allow him to be flexible.

Actually, I think it's the other way around.

Fair enough, but I disagree - actually, again, our viewpoints appear to be the exact opposite of what you posit.

Clearly, that's your opinion.

You are right - and these points are the exact reasons for RIM's eventual failure in this market. The fact that you attribute them to Apple, without any supporting evidence, makes it pretty self-evident that you seem to be trolling (magnetic ink not-withstanding)

Let's consider - adopters of the first generation iPhone will receive the same iPhone 2.0 software upgrade that the 3G iPhone will, thus mirroring all the functionality of the 3G iPhone, in their prior generation device - done via a free software update, and simply plugging their iPhone into iTunes.

How does RIM (or Nokia, or anyone else in that space) handle such functionality upgrades? "Buy the new model!"

Sure sounds like Blackberry offers so much more functionality -- it's fascinating, as you appear to argue from a position of frenzied desperation with the arguments you make.

I am not asking for miracles from apple, but I would like to see some actions and signs from those ivory towers that they do continue to support the iPhone platform. Furthermore, your statement that I "argue from a position of frenzied desperation" sounds very grandiose, but I refuse to believe that you are ignorant as to the importance of marketing and market positioning. If you build a better mousetrap, the world will NOT beat a path to your door, unless you tell it about it.

The impression I am getting right now (and judging by other people's comments I am not alone in that view), is that apple is so caught up in iMacs/MacBooks that they simply do not place any emphasis on the iPhone line. A computer can only empower people if they are told how it can do so, and right now no one at apple seems to be the least bit interested in telling people how the iPhone can empower them. In fact, I am sure you do not believe yourself that people have sudden visions of the right computer when they are looking to solve a problem. PLease, Daffy, tell me how can your tool empower people, if they do not know about it.

In fact, please tell me how can the iPhone in its current state empower people. Taking it on step further, in what ways can the iPhone empower people better Blacbkerry can if they were both on the same price platform? I'm really curious about this. You see, I know what can be done on the platform, but all I see is that apple has successfully irritate a good portion of its user base, managed to turn third parties away from the iPhone (while continuing well to push them to the iMac/Macbooks/Mac Pro - in other words, apple is giving a good indication that the platform is dead and that it does not care about it. Now, what kind of a person wouold invest in a platform that is sending such 'vibes'? Not many I am sure, and many buyers for which an adequet iPhone system would have been enough, are now buying either iMacs or PCs.

Building tools to empower people is a good thing to do, Daffy, but it is equally important that these tools remain alive in order to be useful.
