And meanwhile, from the China front, some shadow puppetry...

China Unicom Ltd. has not yet contacted with Apple Inc. to introduce iPhone in the Chinese Mainland market, clarified a China Unicom executive on June 16, 2008.

A recent hearsay has been spreading in the market that China Unicom has reached an agreement with US-based Apple to debut the latter's popular 3G iPhone at the end of this August.

"This rumored cooperation is nonsense," said the executive, "the company will not approach Apple at this moment when the nation's telecoms regrouping has not come to an end, let alone discuss about the iPhone deal. Because it is not clear which 3G wireless license China Unicom will get after the reshuffle."

With Apple giving up on its initial model of revenue sharing with operators, the main obstacle to the negotiations between Apple and China operators is gone.

But, the country's mobile sector currently in a mess, the government has "suggested" a massive reshuffle in the industry in parallel with the distribution of 3 3G licenses. And there is uncertainty about which operator will get the dubious honor to deploy the homegrown (and crippled) TD-SCDMA standard and which will get away with not deploying it. Nobody really wants TD-SCDMA of course but you get serious political brownie points if you pretend to adopt it. But will that be enough?

BTW, I am told Steve Jobs loves shadow puppetry...

Yeah, the Japanese "survey" is quite funny indeed.

The issue, as I see it here, might have to do with Softbank as the selected carrier, as they don't seem very popular AND do not hold any significant marketshare.

Unlike in Europe or North America, the 3g market is mature in Japan (I don't remember the current 3G penetration rate, but it's something like 80-90%), with a very large customer base, with well established, intensive and rather sophisticated, use models.

How will the iPhone fit into that? It does not come as a pioneer there, but rather as an alternative, proposing a different use model. Some of the usual features in Japanese handsets are missing, at least unless someone implements them by software, but as we know, the iPhone has some major and unique points of its own.

As the leading operator, NTT Docomo had little incentive to introduce something new. For Softbank mobile (ex-Vodafone, ex-J-Phone), the iPhone is probably the only chance to get back in the game by proposing something different. And if this something different becomes a fashion item, as it might well become in Japan, it might be huge. But that's a tough bet.

Well, the way I see it, the iPhone's strength for such special markets lies in the apps it can support - specifically, if I were the Japanese carrier, I would include a special application (or set thereof) to take advantage of not only my carrier's specific features, but also to include many of the special features in use in my region (as phones in Japan are used for a variety of things).
