Will it:

'survey' says, only 9% of Japanese, in a very specific small group, want it.

I tend to agree with Son san's speculation.

By the way, Steve looks pretty healthy in that picture...

It will fail in Japan, as in any enterprise market that can see through those nicely done Keynotes of Mr. Jobs.

Here are the top 3 reasons:

1. Apple has made some progress on the iPhone security/management front, but it has a looooooong way to go before truly satisfying enterprise concerns—or becoming a suitable alternative to BlackBerry or Windows Mobile, for that matter.

2. The current one-year iPhone warranty offered by Apple/AT&T stinks.

3. If Apple wants to become a serious contender in the enterprise smartphone space, is should seriously consider the needs of business travelers and release an iPhone that functions with a backup power supply.

Japan is not an enterprise market.

Unless you substantiate that, this is just an empty statement. I am particularly eager to hear your case for Windows Mobile. This should make for a good laugh...

As compared to what? To the one-year standard warranty offered by Blackberry?

Your wish has been granted, and for quite some time actually! You should get out more. Look at Macally external battery, for example.

I use this:

http://www.amazon.com/MusicPower-Charger-Rechargeable-Extended-0900-72/dp/B000QFNK6K/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1214448678&sr=8-2

It kicks ass, combines an A/C charger, with dual USB ports, with a battery powered emergency charger - and for $20, it's cheaper than any 'swappable' battery (cursory check shows BB batteries to be priced around $25-$50). Has enough juice to recharge an iPhone about twice -- and *it* has a replaceable battery (though, not really needed).

As for the rest of ErikE's (yawn) 'arguments' (yawn) - just the usual non-substantiated babblings that you would expect from a troll - thanks for pointing out the obvious ones, FIB. I too would love to hear how Apple's 'limited' one year warranty compares to the industry standard (but much better, no doubt) one year warranty that Blackberry and Windows Mobile devices offer... what's that? Silence?

(It's worth pointing out for anyone else that that $69 buys you iPhone AppleCare that extends the original warranty to two years - though most credit cards will provide the same warranty extension at no additional charge).

I would love to bet some serious money on ErikE's "It will fail in Japan" statement, though I have a feeling that he won't be willing to put his money where his mouth is.

"In Japan, the iPhone will Sell Out on Day 1"

Maybe, but would that be a reflection of the iPhone's expected success or does that mean that only a very limited number of handsets will be available on day 1 ?

It's funny, I was thinking the same.

"In a move geared towards increasing favorable PR, Son san has ordered only 20 iPhones in order to be able to claim '100% iPhone sell out' - brilliant marketing!"

Bill Gates at the recent Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) claimed that 35 percent of the Fortune 500 has participated in the iPhone 2.0 beta program. The top 5 banks, the top 5 securities firms, 6 or 7 top airlines and other industries such as entertainment and pharmaceuticals.

So their new customer target is the business user.

So Apple asked them, what do you need? They replied. Of the many requirements was: "We need a phone with replaceable batteries".

Apple will not do that, it will destroy the design (or something, I do not know).

But Daffy has a solution, the same solution he presented to every problem with the 1st gen iPhone: Buy some unsupported gizmo at Amazon, install this software hack to get louder ringtones etc.

The decisionmakers in the Fortune top 500 firms will not choose a platform they will need to hack with unsupported hardware/software to get the basics working. And they will no rely on credit cards to get the warranty and support they need.

Daffy, your rhetorics reach the level of an insecure 15 year old boy ("(yawn) 'arguments' (yawn) "). It would not surprise me if you really are, and working flipping burgers at the McDonald shop at the corner. If you are, I can understand that you do not understand any of this.

So, if warranty issues may not be a big deal to the private consumer, it is a big thing for the corporate.

The existing iPhone warranty covers a very limited set of repairs, and whatever fixes it does cover must be setup through Apple and not AT&T. AT&T also doesn't currently offer an iPhone insurance plan, though it does offer supplemental insurance for other handsets.

As far as I can tell, that hasn't changed with the unveiling of iPhone 3G—neither device warranty or insurance were mentioned in Steve Jobs's keynote and the related literature on Apple's site hasn't been modified.

And Jobs talk about security and management was foggy at best. Back in March, Apple announced that it would license Microsoft's ActiveSync technology to enable Exchange e-mail, contacts and calendars to be wirelessly pushed to iPhone users' devices. That was a big step in the enterprise direction: but because the functionality was set to be a part of the iPhone 2.0, which will become available for the first time when the iPhone 3G hits the market on July 11, much of initial excitement had died down since. Apple also spilled very few details on the associated security safeguards that would come along with the Exchange support

Frankly, not much has changed on the security front. Okay, so Apple said the iPhone 3G software will support Cisco IPsec VPN (virtual private network) for encrypted access to corporate networks. But that's really all the detail we got. And Apple offered even less detail on what, if any, remote management capabilities will be available—though there were some rumbles about remote device wipe and password enforcement.

The company really didn't mention anything about how administrators will remotely troubleshoot and resolve individual iPhone users' hardware or software issues. And who will iPhone administrators call for support when they encounter an Exchange issue they can't solve on their own? If new calendar entries aren't making it to iPhone calendars, or mail deleted on desktop computers remains on handhelds? Apple? AT&T?? Microsoft?!? So far those questions are largely unanswered...

Dear ErikE,

It's obvious that you are, mostly, talking out of your ass with most of the 'arguments' you throw out - hoping, obviously, that one or another will stick to the wall.

In all seriousness, the only two things you have effectively managed to do, is to demonstrate that you a) do not work in any effective manner in, or with, any type of large Enterprise or corporation b) know woefully little of how decisions get made and finally c) never do any of your homework, or perform the smallest amount of background research.

The recent WWDC had not only extensive tracks on Enterprise issues for iPhone (including remote administration, deploy, secure, and security), and it addressed every single issue that you claim to be unaddressed. Furthermore, it was refreshing to see as many Enterprise IT folks being there, as there were - far beyond the 35% stated as participating in the Beta program.

Lastly, though really, that should have been the only counter argument you'd deserve going back, could you enlighten me, exactly, BILL GATES was at the WWDC talking about the iPhone? Please?
