I have iTunes installed on 3 laptops, all running XP.

An aging Dell laptop with a Pentium M at 2 GHz and 1 GB mem.

An HTPC that I assembled 4 years ago with a P4 at 3 GHz, 2 GB mem, and 1 TB disk space.

And another newer Dell laptop with a 1.8 Core Duo 2 and 4 GB memory.

While the 2 slower machines have never had a problem running iTunes, the newer one fails.

It has no problem running WebLogic with a 200 EJB EAR deployed, Websphere MQ, Eclipse, and Rational CC and CQ simultaneously.

But even after a clean restart, iTunes on its own won't run. Takes 3 minutes or more to load. Audio is choppy, and any attempt at video locks up the machine to where a hard reboot is necessary.

While VLC, Divx Player, Windows Media Player, and Winamp all run fine, iTunes and Quicktime have kept me up many a night trying to determine what it is about this laptop that has Apple software failing so miserably.

My guess (assuming that you are running the latest iTunes and QT), that you're dealing with a driver issue - specifically a type of hardware driver that affects QT - in such instances, it is usually QT that is affected negatively, and since iTunes depends pretty much on QT, that sometimes has adverse effects.

Also, FYI, there was a prior instance of an iTunes version release that resulted in slow performance on large libraries (same as what you described) which was fixed by the subsequent update to iTunes and QT.

Lastly, have you tried rebuilding your iTunes library and do you have sufficient hard drive space left over on the trouble machine?

This is a nice development:

http://www.electronista.com/articles/08/06/30/rbc.high.iphone.demand/

56% of smartphone buyers want an iPhone - this number went up significantly since the iPhone 3G announcement. The associated graph is very interesting, when looking at the portion of the market interested in RIM's Blackberry - currently at 23% in this survey - it's clear which market segment Apple is cannibalizing (and it's not Palm, at less than 3%). If Apple were not in the phone business, RIM's portion would be much more significant, if not the leading segment, IMO - yet they have been reduced to a 23% interest, here.

I'll maintain that RIM, despite its great numbers recently released, is actively on the way downwards - though I give them the fact that they realize that, and are not going down without a fight.

The new $199 3G is actually not quite a new $199 3G. Until someone manages to unlock it (or you are willing to buy the probably outrageously priced French unlocked iPhone), it's actually a new $199 + $30/month for 2 years 3G, at least with AT&T.

The unleashed iPhone has been announced. As required by French law, you'll be able to get an unlocked, contract-free iPhone 3G from Orange in France. Available starting on 17 July, it will cost 609 Euros for the 8GB model and 709 Euros for the 16GB one. Or you can get a contract-less one for 509/609 Euros and wait 6 months to unlock it for free.

So, basically the unsubsidized prices for iPhone in France have not changed at all.

Also, by the way, it is rather disingenuous to quote iPhone price + usage fees as the 'total price of the iPhone'. Regardless of which carrier you use iPhone with, you will ALWAYS have a monthly fee to contend with - unless you just want a paperweight to look at, sitting on your desk (in which case, it's $199 + $175 ETF = $374). A lot of critics do, claiming the iPhone 'really' costs $2,000 over the course of its contract - well, unless AT&T provides free service for all other phones, except the iPhone, the service charges apply to ALL phones.

Actually, it's lower, if only slightly. But this was expected as the objective of this pricing is to dissuade people to choose that option but rather go into a contract. If I remember correctly, Orange used to charge 749 € for a contract-free, unlocked iPhone.

Well that would be true, as long as you compare phones with exactly the same contract (both in terms of price and service). But in general, I don't agree, and for the very reason that you mention, that is that without a telecom operator, the iPhone is an iBrick.

It's actually quite misleading to compare the prices of phones alone, whatever the brands actually, without the added price of the telecom fees, whether it's prepaid or postpaid, as operators sell specific contracts with specific pricing linked with specific levels of subsidies, with varying degrees of service, which may all vary from phone to phone. You don't think that the free 16 GB iPhone that O2 is offering with a £75/month contract is really free after all, do you? You are paying your iPhone one way or the other, but how much are you really paying it?

To take another example, the iPhone 3G @ AT&T is actually 160 US$ more expensive than the old iPhone over the course of the AT&T contract. But yes, for this added 160 US$, you get 3G and its fast data transfer rates as well as A-GPS. So yes, the iPhone 3G alone is "more affordable" initially, but the cost of the required "leash" is actually higher and so is the cost of the iPhone plus the leash. Now are the 3G features and the A-GPS worth those 160US$? I believe so, but it would be wrong not to look at the whole picture.

Exactly my point - and without a telecom operator, what is a phone?

i.e. you would then need to calculate how much your landline phone costs you by factoring in operator costs -- unless you are satisfied with a brick sitting on your desk?

Ignore all the fancy features like 3G and A-GPS on the new iPhone 3G, what's VERY interesting about iPhone 2.0 software (which will work just as well on legacy iPhones) is that while it does not offer Thai as a localization, it DOES support the Thai alphabet in sms, websites and email (displaying it, albeit not easily entering it).

This marks a dramatic difference in the support for Thai in the new iPhone 2.0 software, but also could be a definite precursor that Thai localized & carrier support are possibly not that far off - or, at the very least, that iPhones will be easily usable once iPhone 2.0 software has gotten unlocked (ha!).

Either way, overall there are some very nice feature in iPhone 2.0, a lot of which have not received any public exposure.

It also appears that as long as you are in a country where iPhone is officially supported, and provides pre-paid SIMs and tariffs, you can just activate iPhone with that carrier (via iTunes) and swap SIMs - there's even a feature to copy contacts FROM a SIM, to allow switchers to bring their contacts with them

Essentially, this eliminates the last reason to have unlocks available - the travelers - and will probably effectively kill the unlock market.

This is damn exciting!

in a few days time the 3G iPhone will be on sale and we'll know if it can be purchased truly unlocked.

For as much I want that phone, I will not tie myself to a carrier, full stop. I'm after a true unlocked phone (that applies to any phone), and not just a O2 phone w/o contract. Basically, I wanna purchase one at the price Apple see fit to charge, and take it home. I then decide which sim card goes inside and choose whatever plan (if any) from any given network. Also, want to be able to use local sim card to any country I happen to be for business or holiday.

If the 3G iPhone can't provide that, then I'll give it a miss until such time it does.

I'm afraid that your example illustrates more the unreadiness of Vista or the difficulty for an average user to maintain a windows based computer. My advice: 'upgrade' to windows XP, or better, get a mac.

My Vista installation has all the updates (including SP1).

All my other software run just fine on it. I agree Vista is a load of crap, but Apple has to deal with that if they want to succeed in the enterprise market.

I do not believe Apple know how to make good Windows applications, iTunes is a good example of how not to port an application to Windows.
