As Taksin is so connected with the telecoms industry I believe it is being suppressed on purpose..

The local paper has a guy that writes a tech piece each week.. He and I exchange a bit of mail and I suggested he mention skype and net2phone etc he said that they had actually been warned not to print anything related to VoIP as it would give the paper problems for powers that be... Something along the lines of VoIP can be qualified as being a telephone service provider (need a licence) and that TOT/ CAT / Etc had taken people to court and behind the scenes governement pressure used when the issue was raised in other printed formats.

Ah, the beauty of gov't technocrats with money supressing good technology in favor of their wealth. Fun, that.

What do you need this (Thai VoIP number) for?

There are ways to do it. Some blatantly illegal, some not so blatant.

If you go the software way (and not the hardware way), and pay for the service outside Thailand (credit card), and a couple other things..... then the user is pretty safe.

I dont think the user would have any issues at all... It seemed to me that the idea was to keep publicity and hence public knowledge of how good / easy VoIP really is (Skype is often clearer than my international calls made via cellular or landline)...

As Skype will any minute allow calls from PC to landline and already offers USB 'phones' that ring and answer / connect when picked up viable VoIP solutions are getting more and more common.. I hear many american users are very happy with the vonage service.

Hi,

my intention was to take a sip phone and use it in europe via adsl. SO I could call thailand from europe at the price of a local call and furthermore I could be reached from thailand in europe at low rates from within Thailand.
The other way round is no problem, because there are several voip provider in europe. I could take my sip phone withme to Thailand plug it in the hotel network and I anyone form my homecountry could call me at local rates and I could call at local rates samesame.
Since I am not yet living in Thailand I can not use a computer based program.

In some internet cafes there are ip phones. What do they use? They don't have a local number connected to it?

Thanx
Supreme

You would need to discuss with the provider of the hardware how it handles authentication and handshaking.. It may be that they restrict IP geographically of similar directly to prevent this.. Not knowing the hardware I cant give you an answer..

Many net cafe's have headphone setups but very very few have a private room so you end up having one side of your conversation in public.. Bit weird...

Most net cafes would let you install anything on thier machines in my experience.. I am continually pleased with skype but it was PC to PC only... The latest download (16th June) has a dialpad but they have not yet turned on the system of billing and or vouchers for PC to landline calls..

Net2Phone (which also is the tech behind ICQPhone) is bearable but leagues behind skype in call quality.. They are however cheap and can do PC to POTS calls..

I travel everywhere with a laptop and now have many of my Euro mates and family on Skype...

As I know from one German provider (sipgate) they are explicitly advertising that you can take your phone with you and plug it in worldwide.

The simple idea behind it is, that my wife can easily call her friends/family in Thailand and her friends/family can call her without having to pay high fees.

Therefore I am looking for a complete PC-free solution on the Thai side. I will have Internet via ADSL-router 24/7.

MAybe there are some provider that offer numbers in Bangkok. There are provider that allow you to choose a Los Angeles, CA number even though you are living in old europe.

Does anyone know if it is possible to build a gateway between a normal fixed line and some kind of VoIP-Computer solution by myself?

Fairly simple nowadays, but could be hard to get the needed interface cards down there in LOS.

I'm using "asterisk" (www.asterisk.org) which is free, an outdated 400 MHz PC and a EUR 29.- ISDN Card. Works lilke a charm. (in germany).

But u should be prepared that the IP bandwith/latency to / from LOS can be a pain in the a__, depending on your provider and time of day. E.g. last week I was staying in CentrePoint / Petchburi Rd. and was able to call via their free in-room internet to germany (sipgate) using full ISDN bandwidth and the quality was alright. This was at nighttime, during the daytime it didn't work!!.
