For the technical minded people in here, guess that leaves you out hey Johnny, does anyone know how long CD's last, do they deteriorate at all over time. I take a lot of digital pics now, no film photos anymore and I store them all on CD, I usually make a copy of that CD and store it elsewhere.

I am just curious to know if they will basically last forever and still be good for viewing in 50 years. I store them in a CD case against any damage, scratching etc.

Also, are there any different types of CD that are better for storing photos on, or any other process after copying onto the CD that will be beneficial in any way ??

no 'expiry' date. Although I once read the expected lifespan is 40 years. You can always transfer them to a new CD after 39 years and 364 days....

The most important thing is storage and handling. One scratch or dirt can mean the end of them.

Also, it's a good idea to burn them to two CDs the first time (CDs are so cheap now at THB 5). It one fails, there's always a chance that the second is intact.

There has been a lot in the press about this lately. The cheap "No-Name" Brands of CD's (plus some of the better know ones) are not all well made and can deteriorate quite quickly particularly in the Tropical climate. Ensure to keep them in a "Dry Cabinet" but NO they won’t last forever!

I think the CD drives would not last as long as the CDs... you'd better transfer them to a new medium every 5-10 years if you want to keep them.

Probably in a couple of years nobody uses CDs and keep their data on 340 gigabyte flash cards which you will buy for THB 99.

Any suggestions for an alternative to store digital photos then for longer term perhaps ?? or we have to wait for that technology to still come along.

I agree with the Doc, I think Flash type Memory is probably a good long term (512Mb SD Cards are now around 2300 Baht, so still too expensive) bet but as for now buy "branded" CD Roms and store them in a safe location!

The trouble you have nowadays is not storing your memories on CD Roms, but finding a safe location?

Seems to be going around maybe TPE can help you, then again maybe not.

Nothing lasts forever.

Anyway, what do you care what happens to your pics once you are six feet under?

For my son, my granBKids. Same as my grandparents dont give a sh_t right now, but I certainly like having many of their old photos to look at. I figure my kids will love to look at their childhood when they are old farts, so that is the main reason.
