Hi Guys.
i have another problem.
using my Computer last night and I got the message from Microsoft that 'they were havibg a problem and would be shutting down and anything I was working on or viewing would be lost'.
OK,not a problem as I just go back to whatever I was viewing.

but since then I have noticed something annoying.
i cannot open any links on any website or in my Hotmail.
EG someone has sent me a PM on the BKKtonight Board and I cannot open it or any links anyone might have posted on the Board.

i'm using Windows 2000,but cannot seem to do a system restore either.
have also found that I cannot open my Mozilla Firefox when I want to search for something.
have run various virus scans but they say my Computer is virus free.

any ideas Guys that might help me get my Computer back to what it was 24 Hours ago?
thanks for any help.......

Get a Mac.

Barring that - Upgrade to Windows XP.

Sounds to me like your system is clogged up with malware/spyware (which a virus scan won't always show).

If you can, download ad-aware :

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Run it a few times, upgrade to the commercial version. Be prepared to be amazed by the number of infections you have.

Then consider getting a Mac, again - they don't get this stuff. Ever.

Lastly - one question, if you can't open links, how do you read and post on BTF?

@Nokna
1) I fail to see why a Mac "don't get this stuff"... sure it could be becoz I don't have one
2) I fail to see why upgrade to XP will solve the problem on hand. It might but again it might not
3) Lavasoft : agree with the recommandation... maybe no need to spend money on commercial version right away... do a daily check for new 'image files' for the freeware version....download and run them... in case infection is a new virus Lava might have the fix in about ten days or they might indeed only incorporate it in the commercial version
4) I guess u're using another non-infected PC to surf right now... lucky u

GIEVALI - Macs do not have to deal with malware/spyware/etc... because these kind of infections do not happen on the Mac platform - because we don't have a malware friendly operating system (really, VBS) like Microsoft provides. Fact of life.

I run a virus checker once a month, and have never encountered an infection on any of my systems, or my client's. (The occasional Word file with Word MAcro virus, though, for stuff coming from a PC - but even that has no effect on the Mac side). Just FYI.

XP has a slightly more solid architecture, and also is less prone to internal problems itself - won't reduce malware, but it *might* be easier on the maintenance level for the user.

Mr Alan
There is nothing inherently more secure about the Mac platform compared to Windows. The reason that there are no (or at least very few) viruses for the Mac is two-fold:

1. Malicious people with sick minds want to have the biggest impact for their efforts to fulfill their gratification of hearing about how their efforts have affected others (especially since they don’t get paid for their efforts). Since Macs are less than 10% of the market, it is obvious why malicious people don't write viruses for the Mac platform.

2. Many extreme nerds (especially the kind of people who write viruses) hate Bill Gates and Microsoft, and they worship Steve Jobs and Apple (I don't want to go into the reasons for this). For these people, writing a virus for a Mac would be like an Islamic extremist terrorist blowing up a mosque.

You're wrong on all three counts, Alan, but that's okay.

Regarding 'nothing inherently more secure about the Mac platform', Then I would assume that you simply aren't really familiar with a) The architecture of Unix, b) the internal architecture of Mac OS X, and c) the inherent permission differences between VBS and AppleScript, and what they are allowed to do.

It is infinitely more difficult to write a virus for Mac OS X, than it is for Windows - as Windows inherently provides you with the tools to write such exploits. Add to that Windows having far more exploits, and Microsoft taking their sweet time to fix them, and you have the basic differences right there.

Not quite so, as the Mac has been a prize dangling in front of these folks for years, yet it has never been reached. Precisely because the Mac platform has not been severely breached, would it have a far greater impact if such a virus were unleashed. Guaranteed press.

In fact, there have been several instances of Macs being offered up as prizes with a $10,000 prize for whoever compromises it. I believe only one suc instance has been compromised (and not with a virus), because of a third party tool that the webmaster installed.

Nice generalisation and stereotype, though unfortunately untrue, particularly your characterisation that virus-writers are Mac users... The vast majority of virus writers are PC users sitting in their rooms in the phillipines, Russia, or other third world country - invariably being avid Windows users.

Lastly, the real issue here isn't to do with virii, but rather with Malware and Spyware - which hijacks your browser, locks the user out, pops up tons of pop-ups, etc.... THESE particularl beasties, which are all commercial in origin, are absolutely impossible for the Mac to be befallen by or to propagate - again, because of the inherent architectural differences (which I would really recommend you read up on).

Currently, the Mac is the most secure computing platform, both from the point of view of an admin as well as from a user's.

Sorry it's still in Dutch but actually if u download it and install this tool then follow the next and next buttons, the program will run in auto mode then.
The first marked is Download update: mark this,
then second is: CLEANING mark this all, except the last, unless you want to install reset your internetprotocol/reboot.
the third is: Protection mark this
The only one recommended to unmark is the one before the last of the third (Protection=> Browser extensions of 3rd parties uninstall) if u have installed as add in in yr browser for example Google toolbar or other's then this option should stay unmarked.

Give it a try. It s a collection of programs such as Spy sweeper, Add aware, CW Shredder, McAfee Stinger, Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware, disable Messenger service etc.

Oh yeah, I noticed (my understanding of Dutch is rudimentary, at best, but I could figure it out). Somebody went to the trouble to put everything in one place, and did a nice job with it. They really should localize it for English, as it would undoubtedly receive a nice following.

Hzink, I am familiar with UNIX, since I use it at work everyday. I also use Linux at home sometimes (especially when working from home).

True, someone can set up a Mac to be secure and offer a prize to anyone who compromises it. But Windows can be made secure also with the right fixpaks, firewalls, etc. The problem with Windows is that tens of millions of users have out-of-date systems without the latest security fixes and anti-virus software, and they run their systems at low security levels (security levels are adjustable in Windows).

I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one. I stand by what I have said.
