Mr Alan
Prices for that kind of stuff are usually not any better than in the USA, and sometimes higher. Not sure about the EU or AU.

As I have said about many things in Thailand they are not that cheap if your smart in your home country

What you need to ask your self this. Are you going to be using it in BKK because you live here or are you going to be using it in your home country.

If using it here
Go to a large trusted store IT city etc, then find out the prices from the smaller stores (market stall etc) around it. The prices are very static across most of BKK for electrical goods on the whole. Then go into the main store in the area and ask them to price match the smaller store outside. Most of them do this. Then you go and ask for the tourist tax back form. When leaving the kingdom to see the relatives or friends in your home country get the tax back.

If your using it in your home country you can still do this but as I have said before on another thread most electrical products have a regional guarantee, Thailand has its own or is under south east Asia. This is how the manufactures govern there regional distributors budgets for faulty goods. I know that some smarter guys that have the bit in the teeth have taken goods back from here and found out they do not work when they have got them home, then have got the customer service team in there home country for the maker of the goods to get them a new one but beware this is not the norm and you have been lucky. I can tell you this is not what they are supposed to do.

Try it this way, you buy an Apple Mac G4 power book in the US and you then ask the Apple distributor in BKK to fix your computer or give you a new one because it dose not work. I think that they would tell you to walk away unless they think they are going to get something out of you. Why should the Apple south east Asia distributor give you one of there new computers or fix yours if it is not one of there’s or under there regional guarantee. The final thing to think about is what if the brand of the DVD player you bought in BKK dose not have a presence in your home country, you then have to call the centre in Thailand for a new one. The tax back you saved or the 100bt difference you saved in buying it in BKK is in the bin just on phone calls.

It’s not the same these days as it used to be, there is not a really a massive difference on consumer goods on the whole, yes there are savings to be made and there are some things that are cheaper but they are few and far between and once you way up the problems sometimes it is better and safer to buy from your home country.

If you want to buy a cheap portable DVD player best country is China about 1/3rd of the price if you buy over 25 a month half price not including shipping.

Hope this makes sense

I saw a small portable Soken dvd player at the Emporium this week for 10,000 baht. Don't know how much lower it might be availabe for.

Do mind that these local brands like Soken have a competabilty limitation when using copied DVDS.

You get what you pay for.

I find my Soken (sold as Cambridge Audio in the UK) plays just about everything -- knock off CDs, DVDs, VCDs, etc. -- whereas 'name' gear like Sony, JVC and even Meridian usually doesn't.

A) This rightly belongs in Shopping - not TECH.

Don't think so Shagga. A friend of mine was travelling (here) when his IBM laptop broke. He called them up & went to the repair facility up near BTS Phaya Thai. They asked him to come pick it up the next day. Whether he had to pay or not is a moot point. He was delighted to get his machine fixed so quickly. LY can fill you in on another giant multi-national - DELL - both of these companies will come to your premises for up to 3 years if you selected that option while purchasing. Why would an Apple authorized dealer stand behind products sold elsewhere? Cuz head office in Silicon Valley said it was ok & it will reimburse said dealer. Daffy can tell you all you want to know about Apple.

On to portable DVD Players. Doctor Hate has some issues with Soken - mystery so far. I like Soken - I have maybe 5 of their DVD players. They are locally assembled with Matshusita (National Panasonic) parts.

One reason to buy here & NOT your home country is because units purchased here DO NOT have Region Code chips in them (like a USA model will). Thus DVD player purchased in USA can play Region 1 & non region coded disks. The same player purchased in LOS can play any disk.

If you buy a real Sony Play Station or X Box here - it has the region code chipset in it - which most places can remove & thus void your warranty. I wanted a portable DVD player, ended up buying a HP laptop for movies & email. Price = 72,000 baht.

Portable at 10,000 baht sounds ok to me - since blue ray is coming & these players are going to be obsolete.

Eagerly awaiting my flame session. BRING IT ON !!!!!!!

Edit In: Shopping around is great except in one case. Sony puts a gun to their dealers head. Anyone caught selling below sticker price will not be a dealer on the first infraction. Run around Bangkok & price any model Sony TV you please, ditto DVD players, Recievers etc. You will discover they are the same price everywhere.

Cheap Sony branded stuff at MBK is in fact Taiwanese copies & not worth crap. Try getting a discount on a Play Station 2. Let us know how you get on.

Edit In 2: For cheap electronics go to Singapore or Dubai. No freakin' duties like this place has.

Of course it's hard to buy a region-locked player almost anywhere (except maybe the US). Certainly most players sold in the UK are region-free (according to an EU survey). Even if they are region-locked you can find out how to hack them (almost always by using the remote) on the Internet.

Do US players have this hard-coded? I doubt it.

''f***in Hackers Annoy Me'': They may well do, but at least they ensure you can watch what you've paid to watch.

The hackers that annoy me are the motherf***ers that go into my profile at Bkktonight.com & alter my settings including password.

It is sort of a backhanded slap at the appalling security here (Ikon Board 2.0)
