I have seen many Internet cards on sale in BK - can someone tell me if any of them INCLUDE the cost of the phone call itself or is it just for the ISP connection. Are there any services ( like AOL etc in UK ) where one can get unlimited connection - CALL FREE for a monthly charge- either for MODEM or DSL (broadband) . ? Are modem connections in BK so bad that it is worth going for DSL ? - In a cheap ( <6K baht ) apartment is the landlord likely to allow DSL to be fitted ?. Cheers chaps

I have seen many Internet cards on sale in BK - can someone tell me if any of them INCLUDE the cost of the phone call itself or is it just for the ISP connection. To my knowledge there is not a single temporary access plan available in Thailand which includes the cost of the phone call. Are there any services ( like AOL etc in UK ) where one can get unlimited connection - CALL FREE for a monthly charge- either for MODEM or DSL (broadband) ? I'm not aware of one, but with only a handful of ISPs to select from it shouldn't take you very long to investigate all their service shemes. All the big ISPs have websites in English as well as Thai. Are modem connections in BK so bad that it is worth going for DSL? You can't make a general statement about this. My modem connection is a pretty reliable 45 -50 K, for example. But there are so many factors involved -- most of them beyond your control -- that the only way to know is to actually connect a computer and try it. If you have a laptop, take it along when you are apartment hunting and try it from the room, or if the phone is shut off there then the manager's office. All you can do really is to make sure your equipment is in good condition, modem configured correctly and a good quality cable going to the phone jack. Also open the phone jack and make sure the connections are clean and tight -- remove any corrosion with a knife blade and sandpaper. If you're on good terms with your landlord, get him to open the main telephone switch panel and do a clean-up there on your lines and the lugs. The things you can't do anything about are the internal wires between your room and the switch, and from the switch back to the telephone exchange. If there are problems with the latter, they will affect both dial-up and ADSL. That would be the time to consider a cable modem. In a cheap ( <6K baht ) apartment is the landlord likely to allow DSL to be fitted? Depends on the individual.

I find my phone connection is pretty reliable, I cannot remember the last disconnection I had. I use JI (Jasmine Internet)....my latest card cost 450B for 88 hours ( the price written on it I think is 600B or 650B, you buy from a big place this is what you pay) From a stall in Seacon Square IT section, through the main doors at Tesco Lotus, turn left by the escalators.

------------------------------------------------------------------ I have seen many Internet cards on sale in BK - can someone tell me if any of them INCLUDE the cost of the phone call itself or is it just for the ISP connection. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Confirmed! All packages are for ISP only. No phone calls included. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Are there any services ( like AOL etc in UK ) where one can get unlimited connection - CALL FREE for a monthly charge- either for MODEM or DSL (broadband) ? -------------------------------------------------------------------- Again confirmed! No calls included. There are unlimited packages for connection to ISP though (Click TA / Mweb), but no phone calls included. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Are modem connections in BK so bad that it is worth going for DSL? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Most of the cheaper apartments (<6k) use a pabx, so you never an optimal telephone connection. The state of the wires in most of the older apartments is terrible. DSL: TA-Express is an example of DSL in Bangkok. But I wonder if the price (2, 000-3, 000 per month) is worth it for casual internet use. Plus not everywhere available. Cable: A affiliate of TA (can't remember the name, check their site http://www.telecomasia.co.th) provides cable access in cooperation with Mweb, Internet Thailand. Please note that only in certain areas two-way (up- and download) is available. Im most areas only one way (download) is available (if available at all). Also the prices for a really fast connection are staggering (up to 9, 000 per month). The connection is my apartment through the PABX is terrible. I had to resort to TA and got an dedicated line (3, 000-5, 000 baht including connection). Connection on a dedicated line is around 48.8k. Also, if you decide to use the apartment connection chck out the rates of telephone use first. Most apartments don't charge by the call (as an dedicated line) but per time period (sometimes as high as 5 baht per 10 minutes). To cut it short, check the apartment carefully before moving in.

Last part first, I think most dedicated lines are priced at about 3 baht per call. Knowing your call costs is helpful when using a metered temporary ISP plan -- it lets you know when it or is not more cost-effective to drop your internet connection if you're going to be away from the PC for a few minutes. Example: using an internet package that costs 10 baht per hour and having a phone that costs 3 baht per call, we know that one call = 18 minutes. Since I tend to eat like a starved wolf I typically don't drop my internet connection when I get a bite to eat if I'm coming back to the computer later. It goes without saying that if you need to call the building operator and ask for an outside line, connecting to the internet can be a problem. Sometimes, you can fake it though: hook the phone handset into the back of the modem, switch on, call and request the line, do the dial-up but don't hang up the handset until the modem starts handshaking or connection is made. Cable is a problem in some areas. I detest the setups that only permit download, but force you to dial-up to upload. And many cable plans here have some pretty severe bandwidth limits. Don't be fooled by claims of "unlimited use" -- that generally just means 24/7 availibility, not unlimited bandwidth. At 3000 per month, DSL does seem expensive. But if you make your living online you can easily use 100 baht per day out of a temporary account. It's not unusual for me to be online for 10 or 12 hours per day. With that in mind, the actual cost of upgrading to DSL may be just a few extra hundreds of baht per month and getting doubled or quardupled speed may well be worth it. I would go for DSL but I just can't bring myself to jump through all the administrative hoops to set up such an account nor trust any Thai company with my banking info for an automatic debit.

Quick Summary Unlimited Dial Up If you have a phone line provided by TA you can use an unlimited service called ClickTA from Telecom Asia. This service has three levels Privilage, is the best. It gives you unlimited time and you can have 2 simultanious connections. Cost is about 5, 000 one off charge for the phoneline and then 500 per month. Good option if you can get a TA line and don't need broad band, downside is you cannot multi-link the connections for higher bandwidth. ADSL ADSL is very expensive when compared to other countries. You have to pay one company for the line and then the ISP for the internet access typically you will end up paying 11k to 14k per month for an unlimited 256 upstream 128 downstream ADSL connection with no fixed IP. One of my real pet peeves with this is that there is no guaranteed contention ratio (number of users per ADSL connection), which means if you are in an area of high usage you could end up with the connection slowing down big time during periods of high demand. A similar connection in Europe with a 50:1 contention ratio would cost as little as 2, 400 baht. A new fibre optic network has recently been laid in Bangkok so we might see a reduction in prices as this comes on stream. Satellite CS Comms offers the IP Star satellite connection which is expensive but requires a satellite dish not a phone line. Prices for a 256/128 connection are about 7, 000 baht for 3GB of data per month or 12, 500 for 7GB anything over costs 2.5 baht per additional 1 MB

To clarify Polepolisher's info on ClickTA. There are 3 levels of dial-up acess via a TA phoneline. #1 Privilege @321baht per month. Each dial-up costs 3bt for the call Maximum session time is 3 hours. 1 e-mail address. Can only use the connection fromthe TA phone line you nominate. #2 Professional @375baht per month. As above but you can use your account from any TA phoneline. #3 Advance @500baht per month As #2 plus you can use from 2 computers. The problem with most fast (?) connections as l see it are: #1 Any advertised fast speed is usually only for Thailand based servers (read the fine print) not overseas. #2 Download limits are not very large. #3 Download speed is not constant. You may have ADSL etc. but often it's barely quicker than Dial-Up. Maybe that's why there are only about 12, 000 broadband customers in Thailand. If you're used to a fast connection in the U.S. or Singapore, Korea etc. you will be unhappy with the Thai version. ClickTA is powered by Asianet btw. Read the fine print on the lowcost hi-speed options. Even TA's recent promotions which were charging about US$60 for the ADSL box was still not worth signing up for IMO.

Yurune, I am using Loxinfo with a card of 75 hours for 650b, but I dont particularly like it, but being the computer wiz that I am, I have not been able to change yet. The setup for lox is very simple, matches me perfectly, I tried KC once before, but the setup was so much bloody work that I could not get it to work, lol. So went back to Lox. Anyway, Lox I have found that I have frequent disconnection, not that frequent I guess, but 3 or 4 times a week. Also something that is very annoying with them, is that at the end of the 75 hours, you are disconnected with no notice, so you do not know why and think it is ajust a disconnection and dial up again, it very often connects for a minute or 2 and then goes off again. So the result is that at the end of every 75 hour period, I end up dialing up maybe 5 or 6 times, to be sure that it is not some other problem as to why I am disconnecting. It is a pain in the arse, how dare they annoy me like that.
