A question from a serious NON techie:

Recently I have been using a TRUE sim here in Thailand and it is terrible at all times of the day, the norm is an outgoing call often results in a connection that echoes my voice back to me OR just drops the call OR failed call!

More problems at rush times but almost every day these are problems, with my DTAC, FAR fewer such problems!

And on the occassion that I use internet places in Bangkok, TRUE cafes are often terrible designs for comfortability and it takes 2 or 3 thai workers to figure out the computer generated passwords for farangs to u derstand AND the staff is moct often severly language and computerv skill challenged! TOT locations are FAR superior.

Observations?

Given the above, now that I am about to need broadband at my house, what are the best quality and cost options?

Limited by your location. In some locations, ALL you can get is TRUE, in others you have a choice.

Who provides your landline service?

It's not just True SIMs that have problems (mine is usually ok though). Because of too many cheap deals there is a lot of congestion but AIS and Dtac are usually better than True.

With broadband/hi-speed it can depend a lot on where you live. In a condo on lower Sukumvit it can mean you're sharing bandwidth with too many other users in a small area resulting in poor download speeds. Out in the suburbs where not so many people have internet and if they do then it's more likely dialup then the quality can be ok. True is the biggest ADSL provider, about 90% of the Thai market. Over the last few years l've seen so many threads about the different internet providers in Thailand, True, Loxinfo, Samart, Buddy etc. they all have unhappy customers.

I've long come to the conclusion that if you don't need a fast connection for business then just get the cheapest available as so many people who pay for the higher speeds don't get what they pay for anyway. You might get good speeds for Thai sites but for most overseas sites again there are too many users for the available bandwidth. If you want to download movies etc. then the ISPs all throttle download speeds so it makes more sense to buy pirated DVDs rather than take a day or three to download a movie.

Don't expect to get anywhere near the speeds you pay for and you won't be disappointed. Your choice of ISP may be decided for you if where you live already has a True line. With a TOT line you have a much wider choice.

Sales staff at Thai internet offices often have very limited knowledge of how things work so you you need a bit of luck finding the one person who actually knows something. True have been ok for me but they get the most complaints simply because they are bigger than all the rest combined.
