on trip 23- I finally bought a cheap cell phone in bkk-- (verizon in usa is on cdma which works only here) - what a great thing- for 50 bucks I have phone number and can buy a sms card at any 7/11- was calling my wife for 5 baht a min in us- so question- will this single band gsm (it says 900/1800) work in england? can you buy sms card there? if not can I buy cheap phone with pre-loaded minutes in london-- t mobile in us is on gsm but they are talking like 2 bucks a min- and u need contract-- any help much appreciated

Yes the UK & most/all of Europe is GSM (I believe 1800 or G3, which is compatible) so yes it will work.

yEs you can buy a SIM in any of the SP shops and then replen cards.
Last time I bought Vodaphone as they seemed to have the greatest physical coverage and the largest number of shops to buy the replen cards.
